Q:

problem like reeleone

REELONE,

Did you ever figure out whats causing the large groups? I have had the same problem since I got mine, although sometimes it would group tight at 50 yards – othertimes 2″ – 3″ groups. I check the end but no signs of clipping, tried all speeds from 880 to 990 (really spiraled at high speeds). Last week it shot a pellet that sounded like a .22 lr., even though I had Donnys ldc on. I took it apart, but everything seemed fine, and shot a few strings @ 910 with es of 10 and sd of 4. Anyone know what happened?

I thought it was me all this time, and I finally bought a vice & camera. I was amazed – about 1/2 the shots would go up, down, left & right… and sometimes spiral.

Now, I’m still thinking user error with a new camera – I’ll take more slo mo videos and make sure I’m doing it right. Meanwhile, did anyone have a similar problem? could it be something wrong with the barrel?

I have an e-mail in to tony to ask his advice on the next step, since I’m at a loss on what to do. by any chance, has anyone sent their barrel out to be tested / polished / lapped?

I did 4 passes with a bronze brush from breech to muzzle, then ballistol, then dry, the last time i cleaned it – didn’t make a difference.

Are you recommending that I stroke back & forth, especially in the choke area?

Check your choke closely with a bright LED torch for lead buildup, I see some spiraling pellets if the choke gets to fouled.. take a bronze .22 brush to it then drag a few dry patches through and try again.

Back again, I’m glad reelone solved his issues, I ave not.
I got the 12mm x 1.25 nuts from amazon and finally had a chance to test it where I wont bother any neighbors. It still does the same swirling with no moderator – nothing but the nut to hold the shroud on the barrel. Could it be a defective barrel? or am i still missing something? any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply Wingman. I saw a video a couple of months ago that JSB will be selling “Match Grade” pellets soon. One box will be from the same dye and within .001 grains of each other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo3U9TVcotA

Have you tried AA 16 Grain in your Edgun? Being they are 5.51’s you might find more pellets in a tin that your gun likes. AA 16 Grain are made by JSB in a AA dye. My Brocock loved the AA 16’s.

Gerard, I thought i posted, hope this isnt a double, That sounds like a very reasonable explanation. I’m going to stop by the hardware store next week to give it a try also – Thanks

Wingman can you list the brand and weight of each pellet you tested in this video?

They are all of JSB manifacture and 18.13gr. Jsb pellets vary in head side a lot from batch to batch and from the various dies.. regarless of what the batch stickers on the base of the tin tells you (all the ones I tested said 5.52mm) you have to carefully measure them to get the true head size. There are many different grades of JSBs, the good ones will all measure the same right through the tin although still not always what the sticker tells you, others are really bad and look like multiple mixed dies or floor sweepings and every pellet in the tin varies in head size.

The ones I tested in this vid were the following:
5.49mm old stock silver tin JSB 2000
5.50mm Edgun 2013
5.51mm Edgun 2013
5.52mm Edgun 2013
5.53mm JSB 2011
5.54mm Edgun 2013

Did you try to shoot without the shroud? Remove the shroud and use a 19mm nut to hold the barrel tention, some times the shroud is a bit off the center and can create a turbulence without clipping which result in a similar group as yours

I still have the same problem, some groups are acceptable but the majority is still too big. I’ve tried everything except polishing barrel, (someone mentioned to my post and this option.) If this does not help, send the gun to Edgun the service.

Regards

Wingman, I seen this video before but now it makes sense – thanks!!

I’m going to leave speed & weight alone and try to do a test with different head size.

I was able to take it all the way down, clean & reassemble – but it still shoots the same – got to shoot it @ 75 yards in to the treeline – with the sun behuind me, could see swirling. some small & tight, some large & looping, some to the right & some to the left. Since I now have a camera, I’ll try different speeds & pellets tomorrow.

has anyone had trouble from the barrel, baffles, or a combo of both?

Thanks Hoot, I’m thinking scope also, I dont have a vice that is able to hold steady when cycling the next round, so I’m not sure. I’ll re-set the scope and try again. I dont have another quality scope to compare the Hawke to, but am in the market for one in the 1-2 g range – any suggestions? Looking hard at the us optics, vortex and others like that. As for drinking, no alcohol with my firearms – is detracts from the effects of the crystal meth habit. Thanks

:hoot:

Here’s an unlikely possibility. Unscrew the shroud cover off the end of your barrel. Grab the baffles with your hand and try to turn them either direction. If they move, the barrel is not tight. Remember on the R3/3M the baffle nut pulls the barrel tight against the breech. If you can move your baffles, then the barrel is loose. Even slightly loose makes a difference.

If you use a crescent wrench, don’t tighten the nut any more than 1/8th inch past full stop.

It’s unlikely, but then the results you are having are unlikely…unless you are a heavy drinker! One must always consider pilot error.

Hoot:

My best bet is the scope is jacked up, or the mounts are not tight.
