R3 .30 Cal in AZ.. Moderator Alignment – Clipping
…OK Guys. Yet another .30 cal has Landed…got it about 2 hours ago.. but had a couple of Honey doo’s.
The Scoop… Over all FIT and Finish Excellent .. Typical EDGUN Quality.. ( no ass Kissing .. Just Honest)
Bolt Pull… Smooth.. ( pull weight is about the same as my Daystate Air Ranger .25 that I had)
NO Bolt Blow by…
Trigger… Best one yet.. (compared to Leyla (2011) – R3 .25 (2013 early- 2 screw) – R3 .22 (Mid 2013 -1 screw)
Muzzle Flip.. No.. having shot the 30 cal Boss, Daystate Wolverine and a few other High powered Aiguns .. It is A 30 Cal… it is gonna Move!.. But I wouldn’t call it muzzle flip!
SOUND Level (measured inside with sound meter – not iphone)
.22 Leyla – 92.3 db (20 fpe 15.9 jsb)
.22 Std – 93.9 db (34ish fpe- 18.1 jsb)
.25 std – 97.2 db ( 50ish fpe – 25.4 jsb)
.30 LONG – 92-97 db —– it is hitting the pellet trap so hard I am not getting a good reading.. I got more readings under 93 db, and only one ore two that were 97. Total of 10 shots measured).. will remeasure out side tomorrow.
OK.. Now the part I need help with.. PLEASE!!! ASAP
The Moderator is clipping… Looking a the Muzzle it is at the 11 o’clock position. After a little head scratching my deduction is that it is a Barrel timing and/or assembly technique issue. The hole in the moderator is .353 as measured using a set of “Pin Gauges” (plus+). So plenty of space around the pellet. (compared to FX Boss moderator hole that is .025 SMALLER) (The Pellet clipping starts at the 4th baffle from the front.)
SO.. My Question to ED is … What is the ALLEN WRENCH SIZE to remove and Re-time the Barrel and Moderator.
(I currently don’t have one that big.. So I will pick one up tomorrow)
My best guess is that by loosing the moderator retaining nut and may be even the Barrel. That I can re-index them and get the proper Moderator alignment.

i turned a brass rod on my lathe today with a 12 mm hex with hole bored thru it to try and clock the muffler and no dice,so i ended up trying some very fine shims to lower part of muffler to get up and when i did poi was crazy high so i took shim out and worked with it some more and it seemed to start getting a little better after i removed it and went back together with it,i dont thinks its clipping like it was but its still on the edge.
There´s even easier solution to the problem that has haunted EG a good while: Make the moderator “free” so it can be threaded on after the barrel is properly tightened. The current design (moderator being one with the barrel lock-nut) is not the best solution for parts that can either be or easily get outta true if it gets accidentally smashed/bumped against something. Easiest way would be to have the muzzle end threads go a bit deeper, say 15mm deeper, and have a separate lock-nut for the barrel so it can be properly tightened at first and then comes on the “fee flowing” moderator.
Something for Ernest maybe ?? A full shroud a`la Cricket would be better still – as long as things are properly machined – read: Straight,round and true.
I may be wrong but I think in the future if Ed makes the moderator as a full shroud, easily done by just raising the breech block to accommodate a larger dia. shroud, would eliminate the issue all together. I do believe that the .30 was just an experiment on Eds part to see how things went and have no doubt this model will be improved upon in short order. Until then I hope you guys get the issue resolved soon.
I’m gonna sleep on this one tonight .sometimes it works that way, may come up with something before morning.
There is an entire batch of the castings close to that with the same issue. Mine just barely clears and the front of the baffle is low when I put a rod down the barrel. You can try to shim the moderator shroud adapter on the bottom somehow.
I checked mine after 50 shots or so and nothing, I read this and just checked it again just now and my alignment is perfect, wish I had and answer, sure seems like re-clocking it would do the trick though, is it possible a .001 or .002 shim is needed under the mod. Before the nut goes on ??

Yup. The baffle casting is just off a bit. They are all off like that. Is it just the front hole?
i have been fighting with my 30 cal all evening i made the tools described and even went further and got on my lathe and made one with hole in center with aluminum rod to center off the bore and i still cant get it to stop clipping i used white out also and it is clipping in the 11 oclock position as well, it looks ok until i tighten the nut and thats when it pulls down,
Can you do that again only this time video it for the rest of us? 😛 I am sure Ernest will make some fancy videos. Having the right tools is always a issue. Great job. It looks brand new. 😆 I think I resolved the chip/clip issue on my std 30 but I will be interested in your results in case I am wrong. 😯

and I have only had the gun 12 hours..(but had to sleep for 6) …..It is really over rated ❓ ❓ ❓ ❓
I am sure many people are reading this in absolute Horror…. Here is the Deal.. I buy Edgun’s because I know If I need to Fix or Adjust Something I know I can do it with a little help From Ed Himself !!!
So for me, No Big deal… Just a little alignment issue. While I have the Barrel off I will “Bore Scope” it and may be do a little polishing.
I have done a quick “Fit and Feel” test on the Moderator assembly. Some of the parts feel a little ruff, and a little tight. My guess is a small burr and additional thickness from the Anodizing is what is causing the miss alignment.
I am sure a little “Polish Here and There” and I will be up and running in a few hours… BUT FIRST… MOOOOOORE COFFEE 
I know I was impatient last night and Made a “Moderator Nut Tool” (couldn’t just sit around doing nothing)
… I am pretty sure a standard 12mm Hex wrench will work… But dame …. that Nut was Tight!!!! 😯 😯
(But I am just a wienie man from the U.S….. Nut A Tuff Russian Air Gun Designer… 😆 😆 😆 😆 )

I am in the same blizzard. Its a winter wonderland out the. Thank God for basement ranges. Snow brings the sparrows in droves. 🙂

What speed is your gun shooting? I was really impressed with how quiet mine was! I put it on my chrony and it was shooting in the 810 fps range! No wonder it was so quiet! 😆
I was able to turn the HST up and get a max speed of 948 fps so, I get to tear into the reg and adjust it. 😀 I really enjoy tuning my Matadors and I am currently under a winter blizzard warning so: I wouldn’t be able to shoot outside anyhow.
