Q:

Rangefinders necessary or not?

Hey guys

With PCP’s effective range of 25-150 yards is a rangefinder necessary? I’m trying to take in consideration that it has a loopy trajectory…which means range finding is more important. I’m also factoring in that some decent range finding can be done with parallax adjustment….although that is not its purpose. What do you guys think; and what do you guys do?

If I was to buy one, I’m thinking about the Leica CRF1000. It is now discontinued and has been replaced by the CRF1000R…..which I think is of little or no gain. Anyways….it’s between $469-499 delivered.

My powder burners are safe in a safe. Theses are AG only (PG13). The first three are Edgun R3. The rest are custom built by AZ. I was not allow to post these guns so the are in the back ground.

Yes that’s including the guppy tank and freedom 8. Now I’m almost at $5500. The old lady is saying $5000 for an air gun!!! It’s a good thing the R3M isn’t here. Lol. It’s giving me time to buy things a little at a time (and research). Kinda softens the blow even if it’s all in 5-6 weeks span. Haven’t bit the bullet on the compressor yet….hoping to still find an alternative. I’m not going scuba window shopping once a month either….pain in the arse. Need to find an affordable high pressure nitrogen solution that I can refill 3-4 times a year.

And that is an Ass load of guns!!!!! I’m sure you hoarded your fair share of .22LR ammo. Can’t tell what you have in the pic…but it’s gotta be in there somewhere. :4: :4:

I definitely don’t want to spend $800 bucks. Not with everything else I have to buy. I’m up to just over $5000 now just to get started into PCP’s. Wow! Some of you guys have 6-10 guns!!!!

The hardest part is spending 5k on the very first airgun. Is that with or without carbon fiber air tank and a compressor? Don’t worry, every gun after that is a breeze in the park. Just look here. Stairs to airgun land.

Sorry guys….I’m sure Nikon puts out a quality product. But I jumped as soon as Secoda said…haha. I just ordered the Leica. $417 delivered….pretty cheap for a Leica product that lists for $599. I was looking around and saw used ones selling for $350. Couldn’t pass it up.

I’ll post my findings after I play with it in some difficult situations.

+1 I use antique Nikon 440.

I think rangefinder is a very good thing to have for airgun shooting, but I dont think you need to spend over $200 for one.

I have a Nikon ProStaff Laser 440 and It didn’t cost me an arm and a leg.

It served the purpose very well and didn’t break the bank.

If you can get that for $399 I would jump on it.

Not exactly. The old models were crf1000 and crf1200. Now both discontinued. The crf1000 only recently. The crf1600 replaced the crf1200 and the crf1000r replaced the crf1000. Prices as of this moment:

Crf1000 – $399
Crf1000r – $599
Crf1200. – N/A
Crf1600. – $799

As far as I know the current models are not discounted at all from the dealers.

I see there are different models of Leica CRF 1000s with varying prices.

I can’t argue with these reviews either.

That seems like an incredible price.

Midway has that for quite a bit more over here.

To be honest, I can think of no reason to range anything over 500 yards. For any gun. Lol. I’m not that good of a shot! If it can range soft targets in low light to 200 yards consistently, then I’m happy. I’ll look at the Leopold. But, $399 for the Leica is looking pretty good right now. 😀

That is why I put the Leupold out there. It isn’t as good as the very high end rangefinders but it is better than the typical Bushnell’s, Nikons, and $200-300 ones. It does everything I need it to do for Prairie dogs and coyotes much less airguns where it is really overkill.

I have only tried the Leica 1600 and it was really nice. It definitely reached out there.

I have read that the Leicas are all about the same. All you gain is Maori distance and some ballistics data. Is this true? And no, it’s US $. It’s just that this model is discontinued….they make the CRF1000R now….it’s $599….as was this model until it got discontinued.

Sorry for the typo…..the main differences is ballistics. Oops
