Recomendation for a pellet rifle for a 9 year old?
The wife tells me, we should get him (my oldest son) a better bb gun for christmas, god i love her. 😀
So he currently has a red ryder style bb gun, is very responsible about gun handling safety, is getting frustrated with it’s accuracy, and can’t shoot my guns due to LOP. I would like to find him a pellet rifle that he can operate on his own, fits him, will deliver satisfactory accuracy(for him), and is scope compatible, cause he wants one bad. He loves my crossman 180, but i don’t like him packing around a fifty year old gun that’s in mint condition, and C02 is a pain for him to change cartridges, as well as exspensive for how much action i’m sure this gun will see. Any ideas?

I’d say an 853 or 953 would be a good upgrade to airgunning for a young kid.
Single pump, accurate and the 953 is not expensive. The 853 would be a nice gift if it was in the budget @$.

What rob’ says makes alot of sense. I’ve seen Langs son trying to cock his springer and its frightening to see. One slip and he’ll do a ‘critter’……
With minimal maintenance, should last a lifetime. …and the effort to pump will ensure that a younger shooter realizes the importance of good shot placement…

That’s a good point rob, maybe learn with a pumper then go to a break barrel.
And they don’t require minimum maintenance. My 853 is nearly 10 years old and not until the last couple of years has it ever seen anything of the maintenance sort. It had a leak that was easily fixed. But 8 or so years of nothing done to it and the thing worked for all those years is pretty impressive. 😀
Although some lubricant and such probably wouldn’t hurt it. 😉
I would certainly go with a pumper… Benji 397… .17 caliber… will last forever…cheap on ammo…. is forgiving in as much as no worries on dry fires, or the barrel popping back up and cracking his face as with a break barrel (ask Critter about that one)… and he can grow into it.

Even if i had an edgun, he wouldn’t get me to put it down long enough for him to shoot it. I think sticker shock might set in on my wife on that little stocking stuffer. 😆

Don’t know why he’s bitching about the accuracy of his Red Ryder though… when I was nine my Red Ryder would demolish anything within a mile. 😉
Then my grandpa let me shoot his Benjamin 312. Ohhhhhh…. boy. Now I was killing things five miles away. 😆
I still have them both to this day. The Red Ryder works fine, but the 312 needs a seal rebuild one of these days.
A pumper is the only way to go for a nine-year old. He can mow lawns for a PCP when he’s 12.
Oh no way in hell he will be gettin a PCP for a while, he will have to earn a toy like that. A hundred bucks or so, i will do. I thought about a Benji, but i have never shot one myself, and the length of pull seems more suited for an adult. I guess i could cut down the stock on a wood gun, but ouch. My first pumper was a Daisy powerline something or other, it shot well but i remember it being big, heavy, and a finger pinchin beast. Lightweight and truly sized for a kid is a must.
