Regulator Volume

I was wondering if you gave the EtacReg a little more air volume how much would it change the fps. I came up an idea to add a little chamber on top of the Etac. I will machine a hole on the top and weld on this little block that I machined to match the Etac and the back of the gun. I will post some pic’s as soon as photobucket is back online.

All I have is the group that Tony shot after he built my gun. It is 5 shots with 43 gr at 40 yards and it is quarter size. I haven’t had time to go shooting. I don’t have the distance and it would be just a matter of time before one of my neighbors would look over the wall to see why there dog is barking. The sound it makes when it hits the dirt or anything is the problem. Tomorrow I’m going to the desert to go riding and will bring the gun. Suppose to do a 100 mile ride. Hoping I have time to get some shots in.

Sounds like youhave a good valve, 1000 FPS with 43 grains is cooking. Howis the accuracy?

I get right around 1000 fps with 43 gr. Not sure what it is at 25 gr and 31 gr. All the reading I’ve done it seems that you want to stay in the mid 900’s for best accruracy. I’m going to try and get 31 gr to 1000. I’m still waiting for a Blob valve. Haven’t heard from him since Oct. I also ask Dave 424 to make me a valve. Haven’t heard back from Dave on a yes or no. I still will have a tank 53 ci tank with a E-tac and no reg for when I need all the horse power I can get. If what your doing works for you and you want it all to line up let me know. I can make it all line up with a little machining and shims between the reg. All my setups are clocked perfect.

I have a shoebox coming in two weeks, so I will have 4500 PSI at my fingertips anytime I want it.

The Condor is a 3000PSI rifle, why make it less powerful? That is why we have Talons. I can get over a 1000 FPS with 18 grains in a 24 inch Talon so why make my Condor into a Talon?

So I guess that is where I have trouble with the ETACREG and the lower pressures, and while they are wonderfully accurate due to the regulation, they do not quite make Condor performance. Folks like that crazy deer killing hillbilly, RJ Porter, have gotten me on this full power quest. RJ Porter is going after pure velocity, I want sub Mach l power.

The Condor valve I have now pushes 25 grains at 1020 FPS at 3000 PSI and pushes 25 grains at 1030 at 3200 PSI. So the valves can and do open at 3000 PSI or more if adjusted correctly.

I have not put the two ETACs together, so of course I have not tried all this with the fatter Pygme tank, but it is not any bigger than the larger 50 cui tanks in use now with and without ETACs. If I had a lathe, I would be using it to remove enough metal to make those ETACS line up by removing metal from the two face joints where they screw together, this would not weaken the system any IMO. Having said that this could be the deal breaker, the ergonomics part is very important to me, it is one of those things you have to spend some money on to find out.

Right now my AF rifles with canted short Etacs, wear either low or medium rings without the trirail and are far more comfortable to shoot that the standard AF rilfe, Jim has me spoiled.

Yes it does use a 4500 PSI tank, few have tired that, and yes it does put 3000 PSI or more to the pellet, but that is what a Condor is all about. The Pygmee tank is no longer sold, I got lucky and recently bought one, when I put it beside the AF tank the wheels started turning, granted they squeaked also, too many fist fights in my misspent youth. :lol:.

I also have a metal breech coming rom Subssonnic to strengthen that part of the rifle for this task.

I want to get the heavier 25 grain projectiles as close to the speed of sound as I can, to gain as much practical power from this platform as I can in regulated form.

For about the same money, I can buy one of Joe B’s wonderful tank regulators, like the set up that 80 Grit is using and just tether it to my short ETAC, the Pygmee will fit nicely into a belt pouch, either way I will find out what it does to the performance of the rifle.

And I may have to do just that, I do not know yet if the regulators will screw directly into a scba bottle, so there is yet another potential deal breaker that may make me tether instead of screw together. And at some point screwing all those pieces together may just be impractical.

But I can also experiment by simply filling the Pygmee to the desired pressure and shooting it over the Chrony and onpaper while tethered.

In the end it might not quite be a “mission”, it might just be stumbling in the dark with my wallet leaking. 😆 😆 But that is what we do with these rifles.

yep you should be able to get more velocity with the top hat open more. you only need 100 fps to get the 31 grain pellet to 1000, i would think that with the 2500 reg and more top hat you could get it.

what is the next pellet weight, to get to 1000.

Around 50 fps. I think I need to play with the tophat. I was told it is set at 0.70. Jim is getting 970 with 2500 reg and I’m getting 957 with 2000 reg with JSB’s. Tomorrow I will put the 2500 reg in and see what it does. I just got my wokguard back from anodizing so now I can shoot it some more.

Your going to have fun getting all that to line up. Don’t you think 3000 is to much? I’m going to make the 2500 reg with a little bigger collar and I think kodiac’s will be close to 1000 fps. I’m sitting here with both E-tac’s screwed together and it might double the volume but that’s it. On my modified E-tac with 2000 reg it is probably close to 4 times bigger. How fat is that pygmee tank? With the E-tac’s lined up the way you say it is only going to lower tank 1/4″. If you point the second one down it would give you more room. The only other problem with 4500 psi tank is you will never get it filled all the way unless you put it on a compressor.

My idea is to use, going from the gun to the tank in this order, a hi performance valve, short ETAC with plugs where the gauge and fill probe are, then the ETAC reg upside down to make a dogleg with the short ETAC, then a 4500/3000 PSI regulator, then a Airhog 4500 PSI pygmee 64 cuin bottle.

The whole affair is not much longer than a stock Condor bottle with Etac, it is running a full 3000 PSI into a combined chamber of the short ETAC and the ETAC reg, so volume is doubled, and your powering it by a 4500/3000 regulator, that JDS is selling now and you have a 64 cuin tank for many 3000PSI regulated shots.

No welding, you use MM and JDS off the shelf parts.

Just an observation from someone who has just read this thread. As to whether the tig weld would hold, in theory, if the collar was machined with two grooves that would accept O rings either side of the major recess, then even though the collar would slide to and fro, it would not leak air, or blow off at say the 2000 psi working pressure, it could of course be accidentally nudged along the reg and therefore releasing the air.
This is by no means a suggested option, it would be dangerous to use, but it is no different to a pcp fill probe holding say 3000 psi while filling a pcp, there is no resulting force trying to blow the probe out, and there are only a couple of skinny O rings holding all that pressure in.

I would like to see the collar hydro tested if I personally was going to use it though.

Got my new E-tac regs yesterday. Had to do a little work to them before I put on the collar. Machined the flat’s on the side and also had to take a little off where the valve goes in because the clocking was way off. Also put a second set screw 180 degrees from the other. Here’s how it shoots now with the collar.

Was close to 2000 psi

Going to go out and see how this thing shoots in the next week. All I have been doing is shooting it through chonogragh. I shot my old chonogragh so I don’t have the exact numbers for the stings with 2000 psi reg before. Now I have the light kit and can do it in the garage so I won’t shoot it again. Going to do another one a little bigger for 2500 psi reg also.

With the second version I wasn’t as concerned with the weld strength as I was with the base material and how the heat was going to affect it. 12L14 would have machined easily but would have been a bad choice to weld, at least you are using 1018.
