REM M 700
I was looking at a remington police model 700 in 308, at the gun shop.
I asked the guy how hard it is to swap out a barrel . he told me . you cant.
???? he said why in the world would you want to swap out a barrel?
I said I might want to put a match grade heavy barrel on it.
He said well just buy tthis one .he siad its a mil spec barrel , I said you makes it?? he said its a mils pec barrel thats what thier useing now.
I was like whatever , ( guy is a fucking jerk) Now I had read somewhere the type of barrels used by US sniper’s
but I cant for the life of me remember it. it was made in Boston I think ,
Its not a LW or a shilen, anyone know the make ?
And Is this guy full of shit ?
the rem 700 police was around 750 -800 the model with mil spec as he said was around 1100 plus it was mounted with a Leupold mark 4 so it was around 2200.

Military chambers are larger for fuction with dirty chambers is all, when you resize military rifle shot brass it has to size down further , harder on the brass, less reloads.
They will interchange.
I have a sendero 7mm mag. nice gun cannot go wrong. I agree and I am not aware of any rifle remington makes that cannot remove and change the barrel.
I would be very cautious if your going to try the 7.62 military ammo. I know in my .223 target rifle that the chamber will take the extra load but most of the military ammo is pretty heavy and needs a nice quick twist rate, like 1 in 8 where my target 223 is 1 in 12…
I believe there is a chamber for 223 that works with both types of ammo, Wylde chamber? This allows the operator to use all types of ball ammo (223 & 556) with better than normal accuracy for a cartridge specific chamber. So if you have a 556 chamber and shoot off the shelf 223 it will work but it won’t be that accurate, the Wylde chamber allows both types of ammo to be accurate. I think 223 ammo in a military chamber will over work the brass, not good if your reloading…
So while the cartridge may fit and the chamber may hold but the ball might not work with some twist rates. But if your going for a LEO (paramilitary) item it should fire military ammo quite well. Most likely a 1 in 8 twist or close. A quick call to Remington may help to answer these questions as well…
Try accuracy International if you want a nice 700.
SAAMI (the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) – Have a list of chamber’s which could, but should NOT be exchanged – 7.62x51mm NATO does NOT appear in that list next to .308 which means it is safe to cross use.

.308 and 7.62 are different chambers and do not interchange with each other, .308 in a 7.62 chamber is dangerous accident waiting to happen.

Rem. 700’s have been barreled by the US Military with many different brands of bbl.s over the years. Shillen, Douglas Air Gage, The list goes one and on.
If Rem. makes a one piece bbl. and receiver, (They Don’t) it sure as hell isn’t a 700. There have been a very few such guns made. The ones that do exist are mostly VERY Expensive and Rare European Custom Guns.
There have been however several brands of .22 long rifle’s made this way over the years. ..And Mod. 700. in good operating condition can be re barreled by a competent Gun Smith.

I belive it might have been a Douglas or Krieger barrel that they use.
I wouldnt attempt to change it myself which is one reason I asked him about it.
Those model 700’s are still availible here. along with the big 50 cal’s and 338’s

I use to work at a sporting goods shop and we sold a ton of those in .223 and 308 as well as a bunch of 11/87 shotties. But people wanted a little more so when the Sendero came out we sold a ton of those as well.
Here’s my 700-
As far as I know all 700 actions are the same, The barrels are made by Remington.
The difference is in the Stocks, bedding and trigger groups.
I don’t think the military uses the 308, they use the 7.62mm nato which is most likely a different chamber. And may not be interchangable?
I bought a 223 700 thinking I could use 5.56mm nato in the same rifle. to find out you can shoot 223 in a 5.56 chamber but can’t shoot a 5.56 in a 223 chamber. The 5.56mm will chamber and fire in the 223, but the rifle will explode after a few rounds.
The 700 is a good rifle and can be rebarreled by any Remington gun smith.

Anyone who says “it’s better. it’s mil-spec” is full of crap in my book… And I don’t think mil-spec is the most accurate stuff if your looking to competition grade equipment…
Unless some idiot welded the receiver and the barrel together there is no reason why you can’t swap the barrel out… Unless Rem makes a special one piece rifle I am unaware of, which could easily be the case… Of course you probably know what changing a barrel entails. While your there have the gunsmith true the receiver’s face (if it’s a stock Rem). Also make sure you get the dimension of the throat the lands for bullet seating depth.
Personally I would get a receive that has an integral scope mount, Remington 700 receivers feel really cheap to me… But unless your thinking of 500+ yards pinpoint precision it should do the job and the LEO receiver may be a bit more stout…
I was looking to go .308 but now I am leaning towards 6.5×47 Lapua… Surgeon action, Jewel trigger and a Krieger barrel… I’ll probably make my own stock but really like the McMillian A5 series…
