Removing tension from Matador barrel
Saw a video where tension is removed from the barrel of a Matador and it caused the groups to tighten up.Is there any truth to it? ❓

OK gents…sorry for the late response/results. Took some time for perfect conditions for testing barrel tension accuracy results. Where we are dealing with fractions of an inch group size, I wanted this to be as definitive, accurate and objective as possible. Without posting pics and a target by target detailed accounting of the results, I will simply summarize the results for MY GUN.
*Loosened to 3/4 turn off factory, I found that this was 1/8 turn tensioned from finger tight. This resulted in .93″ average groups. This was poor, as would be expected as I think there was inadequate support offered to barrel/shroud.
*Loosened to 1/2 turn off factory, group average .58″
*Loosened to 1/4 turn off factory, group average .62″
*Back to factory (extremely tight), group average .57″
These results were the product of (5) 5 shot groups @ each adjustment, @ 50 yards and are CTC. My thoughts: Once again, with gun #2, not an appreciable accuracy difference with the described methodology. My next fun and games, in the quest for ultimate accuracy, is to play with the bore polishing techniques thoroughly explained by the gurus in this forum. What an elusive vixen that consistent sub .5″ group is but you got to love the journey…on my way down to pick up another 8 tins. :winkn:
I do not believe the stock has any effect on the speed consistency. Reg needs some break in period to settle. That was the reason of some initial inconsistent shots. It was just a coincidence that you had them without stock installed. Keep going on this test.
I started out the day planning to check the poi after putting the rifle back together. First I installed a new hst adjuster I got a few days ago. I began by making the adjustments without the stock. As I shot, the speeds were not very consistent. Then I decided to try it with the stock and was able to finally to set it at 926fps. Have no notion as to why adjusting the hst with and without the stock affects the velocity. By the time I finished it was too hot to go on. We are experimenting a drout and the temperature is murder. Nice for the beach though. To be continued. :fishinghole:

I totally agree.
Having to remove some jammed pellets in the barrel of my gun, I decided to take off the shroud and barrel, I thought this would be a good time to test how tension on the barrel affects poi. Tomorrow I will begin my findings and will post my results.

Didn’t Ville find a similar problem with the Cricket… Realeasing tension, think he found itvwas the air cylinder expanding when full, ???

Fuggit….I just told mine to relax and pay attention to detail. My shot group tightened up immediately!
The key to an Edgun is not to over think the problem, and show a little confidence in your equipment.

Ditto…my experience with the “problem gun” turned out to be regulator related and Tony R readily replaced it, after a few weeks of trial and error. Barrel tension was one of the last trials and did not remedy the error. This is why I’m anxious to try tension adjustment with this second gun and I am even toying with an idea for an inner shroud, barrel dampner for the afore mentioned harmonics. Probably won’t do anything but these guns make it fun and inexpensive to experiment.
I averaged 913 fps, my last chronied string … this is the top end of velocity while retaining best accuracy, for this gun. It shoots really well down to 860 fps but sacrifices precision, incrementally, as I get over 920 fps to 980 fps w/ JSBs. If you get a chance please post your results.
This is a real slippery slope. Sometimes the accuracy problems with any gun are misidentified. What I mean is a person needs to remove human error before the gun is tinkered with. This requires a gun that is shot from a bench set up where there is no human error. Properly tensioning any barrel will improve accuracy. Barrel harmonics are very important. The problem could be the gun already has the proper tension applied. If this is the case changing it won’t help. Finding the right tension was a process I performed when putting the EDgun back together. I just don’t think there is a set tension that will work for every gun.
