Q:

Ring Gauge – Pellet sorting

Hey guys, what do you think? I think this is what rossall was talking about, but not sure. Can this be an affordable/accesible/effective way to sort pellets? We can get it machined for any caliber…lets say a .22. Have holes that are made 5.49, 5.50, 5.51, 5.52, 5.53, 5.54, and we drop in the pellets and sort out the bullshit? Even if its not perfect it’s better then blindly shoving whatever pellet comes in our hands down the barrel. Also a hell of a lot faster then a caliper. Calling all you experts….please give me your thoughts.

Why? What have he ever done to you ??

I’m more nuts then the rest of you….I DONT EVEN HAVE A DAMN AIRGUN YET. I’m an anal bastard, I know! Let’s shoot Earnest a pm and I’ll also ask compufoil if that’s something he can do for us along with the side wheel. I bet we can get at least 10+ interested in a product like this. Not perfect but still helpful if done patiently.

Well – why not, Doc . I need one for the .25. I need to measure some pellets to find the right size. See what you made me do now … I´ll have to sit and sort pellets the whole tomorrow evening to be able to test shoot over the weekend. Damn this hobby – damn it to hell ! 🙂

For those that are waiting on replies to p/ms please be aware of our time difference here.. I will reply but need to sit down at the end of my working day to clear my mail on the pc not at work on my not so smart phone..

Ville…remember. The point isn’t to sort out the precious 5.50 (for example) it’s to remove the 5.53, 5.54 and the 5.48s. If we are careful can that (at the very least) be achieved? Because that’s worth $30-40 bucks to me.

Bugger …. 😥

nah its 10 in the am here and its crazy bust at work at the mo..

It would better than nothing but not ideal.. I have experimented with similar tools before with limited results.. unfortunately getting holes of that kind of accuracy is harder than it sounds and they can change depending on the material its made from and the temperature of the day.
Anything hand held like that adds the human factor too.. if you can feel the slop of a 5.50 pellet in a 5.51 hole your a better man than me.. same goes for the lets say 5.53 pushed into a 5.52 hole.. there us next to no resistance felt as you unknowingly resize the sharp edges of the pellet.. All tests I did on resizing pellets from 5.52 to 5.50 showed no improvement on stability so the goal is to measure the head size not resize it..

WIIIINNGGGMAAAAANNN !! ??

I ques it´s middle of the night there right now so we´ll have to wait few hours for his answer to this. Anyone else ??

Mark said that the lead was soft and damages very easy. But here’s what I say….even if we just drop in….not push in the pellets, it will help. Lets say we get a batch of .25 cal pellets. I ordered 8 tins just now. If the the range in sizes were (guessing here) 6.33 to 6.38 we can find out to some degree what our barrel likes. Lets break it down REALLY simple. My barrel likes SMALLER pellets. Well ok, I separate out everything over 6.36 and put them in a tin and trade with someone else in the forum that likes the BIGGER ones. It’s still a shit ton better then before. Like I’m saying….it’s not an Air Gauge like Mark has. Lets face it, 99% of us are not going to have the equipment to sort pellets that well. Maybe we can’t get dime groups at 100 meters. How about a nickel? Maybe all we do is REMOVE THE FLYERS. That’s still usable for the little expense and effort we”re putting in for this kind of sorting. But I still would like a few of our knowledgable members to chime in.

I´m no expert but that looks like it could work – heck, i´ll buy one for .25 cal.

Wingman – where art thou ??? Would this work for measuring ??
