Q:

Rotary milling.

Can it be done with some kind of special attatchment that’s fitted to the table of a bog-standard two-way-feed mill? I’m talking of a job like cutting a circular depression into a flat piece of work and then cutting a lip under the internal edge of the circle (for example).

You could use the tailstock and dividing plates to put evenly spaced flutes on a shroud or barrel.

Thats why I thought that one I posted was a really good deal. It is a 6″ though and would probably be to big for the smaller mills.

Grizzly has a 4″ that comes with plates for 153. The tailstock is extra.

I havent done it yet but for a chuck I figured I would just make adapters for the chucks off of my lathe and use those on the rotary table.

If you want to cut out a big hole…. you use either a boring head

You increase the offset (diameter) of the head with each pass… takes a while.

or a rotary table to cit the entire disk out which is quicker

I bought this rotary table. It has indexable plates and a tailstock included. He puts them on Ebay now and then. I paid 195 for it.

Yes, I’ve seen those indexers on various sites. Supposed to be for cutting cogs and the like. Didn’t think they could be adapted for other stuff, but human ingenuity… 😀

A dividing head is also useful for doing rotary work on a mill. bolt your work to the round table, and you can rotate the work piece. I put a 6 inch chuck on mine, you can cut any number of , equaly spaced, flats or groves down the length of a round shaft.

Eee, that was exactly what I was envisioning! 😯 😆 That opens up almost endless possibilities. 😀
