Q:

Set up chrony today…Not happy

So ive had my .25 cricket for about 2 months now and have not had a chance to chrony or shoot long distance till today. It was fairly nice out so i set target out to 60 yds and took a few shots. Seemed like i was getting different poi every couple shots or so. I decided to dig out the chrony and fire a few strings to see where it was at. Up until today i was only shooting at 30 yds so i didnt notice anything.

The first feww shots were in the 850’s which already didnt make sense because when i purchased gun, i was told reg had been set to 920 or so. I shot threw all four clips and this thing was all over the place.. Some were 920’s, then would drop to 800’s and sometimes 780’s then back up to 920..

I will not mention where the gun was purchased before i get a chnce to sort this out and get more info, but when i got the gun, i saw the shot string from when they shipped it and it was also kind of scattered.. when i called to ask if this was normal, i was told to keep shooting to let the regulator break in, then chrony it.
Well, i must have easily over a thousand shots through it now and these shot strings are horrible for a regulated gun.

Has anyone ever experienced this or did i recieve a lemon??

Does anyone remember how there first shot strings looked out of box?

Please help… I had such high hopes for this thing and spent a lot of money on it (as you all know)

Not on my Crickets they both produce pretty much a straight crony string.
I can’t tell when it’s going to reach it’s reg pressure fall off point unless I keep track of the mags/shots I used.

10 mags, maybe you’re starting and ending at the wrong fill points.

Post some crony strings with pressure fall offs readings after every mag shot.

Is it normal for velocity to drop the more you shoot?

Yesterday, I shot about 10 magazines (in between the rain showers) and my velocity dropped from 898 to 860 but the shot-to-shot consistency held. I had to adjust the POI on the scope, but then I hit everything in the crosshairs, even out to 88 yards (with the proper holdover of course).

I also noticed that since Ernest polished the barrel, pellet size is very critical. I really need to sit and sort pellets, but I feel this is worthwhile if I want to get out 60+ yards as well as stack pellets at 40 yards.

Side note: I put my HW up for sale last week and had a bunch of people ask questions that sounded like genuine interest. Expecting to sell it soon, I took it out and shot it – about 8 magazines. This freakin rifle stacks .22 pellets at 40 yards with no effort. It is so consistent and it really likes the JSB pellets. I hate the trigger, but I think I am going to cancel the for sale ad…

Great news 42!! I was convinced the retainer was also my problem so i tore the gun apart but failed to realize that they ding a thread inside the valve from factory. so i had the opposite of that problem. I tried backing the retainer out and got it stuck. Wouldnt move either way and ended up slicing my hand from squeezing so hard on the threads. The gun is now boxed up and getting sent to ernest tomorrow. Another rookie lesson learned

That is good to hear 42pilot, thanks for getting back to us !

Update on tuning.

The valve spring retainer backing out has been some cause of this jump in velocity.
But recently, I replaced all the OEM O-rings in my friends Cricket 25 cal.
He also had velocity issues of inconstancies over the shot string.
His standard deviation was a bit high.

It wasn’t his valve stem retainer that was causing this problem, but the small O-ring inside of the reg 2mm x 4 mm Buna N70.
Which I replaced with a 1.9 mm X 3.8 MM Buna-N 90 O-ring.

Now the SD is 1 fps over a 4 mag string.

I had to send mine back to Ernest as velocities had a range of 60 fps. Pellets were all over the target at 40 yards. Let’s see what he finds next week.

Please post his findings when you do pilot.. Interested to know… Thanx

It was a loose valve spring. In addition, Ernest backed off regulator to provide 900 fps and now it shoots straight.

Below is a five shot group at 40 yards at 898 fps avg, shot today. The yellow stick pin is 1/4 inch in diameter.

Thanks for all the suggestions fellas. Boy am i relieved.. I set up the chrony indoors today and happy to report she is back on track. All shots within 20 fps. Actually shooting a little hot, between 930 and 950. Maybe too hot for jsb’s but perfect for the benji pellets which shoot great out of my gun. Crazy part is, i wanted an excuse to tear into the gun but for now ill just leave her be.

Now for a question if any of you know.. Is there anything that could be done to the gun that would make it able to shoot consistent in colder temps?? i like shooting too much to put the gun away for winter.. Thanks guys

Don’t panic or anything but from what you wrote.

It maybe that it is still a little cold and that is why your shot are between 20 fps.

All shot within 20fps is a bit to much it should be a straight line, +-1-2 fps between shot at most.
It sounds like maybe your valve stem retainer is in the process of backing out.
The indication it shooting a little hotter is also another indication.

Like I said, don’t panic or anything just enjoy it for now.
If a problem develop come back and post.

To late gk, i paniced lol.. It couldnt be that it was still cold because it was in my room all night and when i set up chrony, it was indoors also. I only filled it to 170 bar and shot 1 clip but it looked like this: 947, 952, 937, 934, 927, 930, 930, 929, 942. There were 3 errors in that string probably from bad lighting but i didnt record where they were. If it should be no more than 2 fps between shots than id say something is screwy. I think i may have another 2 or 3 fills from my cf tank then i have to get it hydro’d so that sounds like a good time to see what the internals of the gun are looking like.

Great! That sounded nerve racking. Glad found it was nothing at all.

Thanx oakey.

Great info. Thanks I was told not to clean an air rifles barrel. That if I did it here and there that was too much. That powder burners need cleaning because of the residue that corrodes the barrel. Just lead going down our tubes.

I had the valve retainer on my Cricket 22 cal standard come lose and it showed a varying peck velocity.
At 880 fps would move around but all else stay the same, no large sudden drop or rise in fps.
Also had a slow rise and decline on the inside of the shot curve ends, not as flat.

Also on the valve retainer if that’s the problem scorpio , “lightly ding 1 thread with a center punch then back it out slowly if it grip that’s good”.
