Q:

Set up chrony today…Not happy

So ive had my .25 cricket for about 2 months now and have not had a chance to chrony or shoot long distance till today. It was fairly nice out so i set target out to 60 yds and took a few shots. Seemed like i was getting different poi every couple shots or so. I decided to dig out the chrony and fire a few strings to see where it was at. Up until today i was only shooting at 30 yds so i didnt notice anything.

The first feww shots were in the 850’s which already didnt make sense because when i purchased gun, i was told reg had been set to 920 or so. I shot threw all four clips and this thing was all over the place.. Some were 920’s, then would drop to 800’s and sometimes 780’s then back up to 920..

I will not mention where the gun was purchased before i get a chnce to sort this out and get more info, but when i got the gun, i saw the shot string from when they shipped it and it was also kind of scattered.. when i called to ask if this was normal, i was told to keep shooting to let the regulator break in, then chrony it.
Well, i must have easily over a thousand shots through it now and these shot strings are horrible for a regulated gun.

Has anyone ever experienced this or did i recieve a lemon??

Does anyone remember how there first shot strings looked out of box?

Please help… I had such high hopes for this thing and spent a lot of money on it (as you all know)

It sounds kind of like what mine was doing. What I found on mine was that the valve stem was loose in the poppet. I noticed one day that the valve stem was exposed about 1/2″ out of the valve instead of its normal 1/4″. This would explain the fluctuation in velocities. Mine even failed to fire at times I guess because all the hammer energy was being absorbed by the loose stem without enough energy left to actually open the valve poppet to its required distance. I was blaming the regulator at first but after tearing into it a few times and not finding anything and then finally finding the stem malfunctioning I finally decided the valve was the culprit. Ernest did do a tune on it and replaced the valve stem/poppet.

Yea i hear you on the cleaning. I clean the barrel every 100 shots or so and it was just cleaned before i went out shooting today. Before i chrony’d it, i did notice that some shots were to damn quite and other shots seemed like rockets. I guess the cold could have something to do with it and i wont know until i get some shot strings in descent temperatures. living on the east coast with the crazy weather im hoping the problem is not cold related otherwise ill only be shooting a few months out of the year 😥

That seems to be an issue as one goes up in caliber – especially on a button rifled barrel. I rarely clean my .177 Baby Cricket and it seems not to ever change from superb accuracy. I can do several thousands shots on my .22 standard Cricket and also not notice a difference. My .25 and .30 especially are different stories and they are Edguns with the button rifling. Cleaning is required much more frequently despite having polished barrels. I know some polish them even further.

Also when was the last time you cleaned your barrel it only takes about 5 mags before my .25 accuracy starts to open up, and around 7 to 8 mags I am shooting high and low left and right about a 6 inch spread at 100 yards sometimes missing the POA by about 8 to 10 inches. Clean your barrel very well before making any decisions on what is wrong. Also my barrel is polished and still needs a light cleaning about every 60 shots with my .25

How is the weather where you are shooting ?
Extremely low temperatures has effected some.

Other than that there has been some problems with defective/bad regulators.

I believe Gracklesmacker ended up sending his gun to Ernest.
But I don’t know what he found to have been the problem(s).

Thanks for the reply GK… To answer your question, yes it was on the cold side, about 35- 40 degrees. I had that in mind but didnt think it would affect the gun so much. I read those threads and thats exactly what mine is doing. I can tell without looking at chrony if its a sub 800 fps shot from the noise of the gun. What i was wondering is if i got a bad reg. right from the distributor or do they all shoot kind of speratic out of box.. The one i got seems like it was already shot quite a bit judging by the little wear from lever slapping. I believe the shot string he sent me was 8 shots 930fps descending down to 900 or so.

Either way, i guess ill wait for a warmer day and set chrony back up to see if anything changes.

Yes Cracksmacker did send his gun to Ernest, got it back about 3+ weeks ago. He says it’s shooting great. But what does he know he’s used to using a slingshot for his hunting adventures …. Mules and all.

Bad reg if I remember…
