Q:

Shilen .257 28” barrel twist rate suggestion

Hello guys.

My new project is the construction of a .257 based on the platform of Mrod .25.
Because I live in europe the choice of the barrel in this caliber is limited to Shilen match grade barrel blank .257 caliber 1 in 12″ twist rate 28″ and 1 in 10″ in 28″ length.
This airgun is intended for long range shooting, and the twist rate selection confuse me a lot.
Here I would like the opinion of the most experienced on the optimal combination of twist rate and bullet mold and opinions for the quality of this barrel brand.

I don’t know how .257 works in that barrel but 1-10 works in .257. There is a good bullet selection also.

I built a setup for a guy in Greece with 30″ 1-10 TJ barrel and he was more than impressed and so was I.

Merry Christmas guys.
Dyotat100 do you remember the bullet types for this twist rate?

I can find the .257 only LW in 10 twist. In your opinion, which cal. would be better, .257 in 10 twist or 6mm PPC in 12 twist ?
Thank you for opinions and advices.

Smaller the caliber the harder it is to make fps. Just not enough surface to push on. In the end it will take more air to make the smaller bullet go fast.

I am still looking for other suggestions and some other European members of this forum as well .
Very hard to find something similar. 😕

Because i was looking for the same cal./twist and because in Europe the Midway site was replaced with Brownells (which has no barrel blanks (yet)), my attention was captured by 6mm PPC USA Lothar Walther. As well as it is a good benchrest and small/medium game hunting caliber, i think it will be an airgun caliber good enough too. So if it can’t be a .257 – 12 twist, it will be a 6mm PPC USA – 12 twist. Should have almost the same flat trajectory or more flattest than .257 cal. and the 12 twist should manage easily up to 85gn bullet. We talking about lower air consumption too because it’s a smaller cal. than .257″. If you would like this caliber, you can choose between 12″ and 14″ twist*** which i think will be good enough in M-rod platform.
The 6mm PPC is rated as exceptional competition barrel.
If isn’t that a sugestion for you, please do not pay attention on it because it’s only my personal opinion and i will take it as an alternative for me.
If my post is out of topic, please excuse me.
Merry Christmas !!!

I think my next build will be nearly ground up…it will likely run an off-the-rack trigger, but the rest will be one-of. I figure for a single build, I can do some more interesting stuff v. taking on something with restrictions. I guess it depends on this one’s power plant being able to deliver…then move on to .357…:D I’d consider a .357 pellet top end for it but those darned things are expensive.
cheers,
Douglas

As i can see, this topic is entitled “Shilen .257 28” barrel twist rate suggestion”, so dear mr. Douglas, if you have nothing to sugest about, why don’t you make your topic with your next build ? This man (not from US) is trying to find something which you can buy anytime with less effort, so please leave this topic open for it’s destination.
Thank you .

Howdy,
I think I have come as close as anybody in wringing energy out of the Marauder platform. I have a 100+ FPE .22, and built a 160 FPE 30 cal. I have come up with a few limiting factors…:) one is hammer energy; there is not enough to kick open a big valve; the 30 cal achieves its peak around 2200 psi, and the .22 with a smaller valve around 2600.

I am building a .308 around what is basically a marauder trigger, with some of the attachment stuff carried over for use on the 1.25″x.095 wall tubing. I am stretching hammer travel by 1.187″ and adding a separate cocking handle. Valve is getting a .33 throat and a .300 port to the transfer sleeve and barrel port. it is a steel body, with a PEEK seat, and an O1 tool steel poppet shaped like an internal combustion engine valve. Bolt is of the Marauder style, but solid, .300 diameter and pulled back to expose the whole transfer port as well as provide a flat surface to push the boolit into its chamber. Goal is 250 FPE, from a fill pressure of 3500 psi with an 7-9 shot string with ~3% velocity spread.

I have a 13×40 engine lathe and access to milling machines. The project will hopefully beat my acquisition of a mill…:D It is turning out to be an interesting challenge. Barrel is a TJ with 14″ twist and will likely be only 26″ long…and full floating, with a unidirectional carbon fiber shroud to put the barrel in tension and increase its stiffness.
cheers,
Douglas

you can’t buy from LW as person. only through a dealer. an accessible dealer is in uk http://www.gunspares.co.uk . as dealer, gunspares will ask to LW and they will make your barrel on request but in minimum 10 pieces and the price is about 300 euro per piece. i know that because i’ve been received this answer from gunspares. my request was an 25 cal 14 twist profile.
now, if i don’t disturb, i want to know what means ” SPECIAL ORDER” ( what is the procedure and how many time durring to have in stock) because i am interested to order a Shilen line blank .25 cal 12 twist from midway. the other way is to order from http://www.extraguns.com (which cooperate with midway italia).
excuseme for my bad bad english.

You’re right Stealth_78,
The response of the Walther was as you described.
If you proceed your order informed us about the availability of the product.

I have sent a message to Lothar Walther in Germany with the same characteristics as the ” American’s :biggrinn: “.
I am very curious about the answers will I receive ( If you ever get ❓ ).

You can use this barrel. http://mauricedrummen.eu/index.php?route=product/product&path=73_81_90_311&product_id=879
I now it is very expensive but they have very good results with it.
I dont now exactly land and groove dimension.

WARNING!

I asked some Dutch airgun gurus about these barrels.

Their reaction was a warning: these are NOT really .257 barrels, but regular .251 airgunbarrels.

So they are not the same as a true .257 barrels, as sold by most US barrel manufacturers.

Since i live in Europe and am thinking about starting a .257 build as well, i might as well tag along here.

Shilen seems like an interesting possibility, but i think i would prefer the TJ’s (because of the great results here).

@gabi.nechita About the 6,5 mm barrel sold by Maurice Drummen, where did you hear (or read) anything about good results with it?
