Q:

Shilen .257 28” barrel twist rate suggestion

Hello guys.

My new project is the construction of a .257 based on the platform of Mrod .25.
Because I live in europe the choice of the barrel in this caliber is limited to Shilen match grade barrel blank .257 caliber 1 in 12″ twist rate 28″ and 1 in 10″ in 28″ length.
This airgun is intended for long range shooting, and the twist rate selection confuse me a lot.
Here I would like the opinion of the most experienced on the optimal combination of twist rate and bullet mold and opinions for the quality of this barrel brand.

Very interesting your suggestions of both of you.

The only reason I would pay such a high amount might be if the length of the barrel would be more than 30 ”. Since it is the same length with the Shilen so I do not deserve so much price difference. Needless to say thank you for your proposal 😉 .

So, the 12 twist in 28 ” length is the first choice, and the construction of a new one from scratch is certain. ❗
I hope shortly to i find free time for the first plans and for the list of raw materials. I will be in contact with you guys, and I hope to do not i have huge availability delay with the supplier of the barrel.

You can use this barrel. http://mauricedrummen.eu/index.php?route=product/product&path=73_81_90_311&product_id=879
I now it is very expensive but they have very good results with it.
I dont now exactly land and groove dimension.

Your English is GOOD ENOUGH. I understand what your saying.

Here is my opinion. And trust me, i understand modern PCP internals. With the MROD as a platform, you are giving up a lot. Its a platform for shooting PELLETS and when you transform a gun like that into a bullet shooter, you are really pushing the boundaries of that guns design and your limiting yourself on the possibilities of the round itself. The 257 deserves to be PUSHED. And to push it, you need valve power and air capacity. Capacity has a direct affect on group size especially when you have a little air tube. Yeah, you can TETHER the gun but what happens when you want to take it on a hunt? Well, you get one accurate shot and that’s about it.

My point is, if you are a machinist and you have the capabilities to design and build your own gun from the ground up, then YOU and the 257 deserve that option.

THE SHILEN sounds like a good start to me though. Custom or not, I WOULD LOVE TO TRY a SHILEN BARREL. 1-12 would be my choice if that’s all you can import. If you go 1-10, i would suggest that CUSTOM RIG of yours to be built. The 10 is gonna STRIP away tons of FPS

Unfortunately , only in Midway.de i can find .257 caliber in 1 in 10 ” twist rate available and 1 in 12″ in special order in relatively expensive prices (over $ 350 including the shipping).
Perhaps i have to change the construction platform.
My .25 Marauder seems very incompatible for tuning like this and especially in twist rates under the 1 in 12″. I am not owner of a condor or Big Bore Sumatra so the scenario for conversion (relatively easy solution) it is not exist, and the possibility to buy a new one or used it is out of budget for me .
I’m seriously considering to move on in entirely handmade construction and I think the ideal platform is like Joe Grits 257 Condor by Doug or RJ Porter’s Haley 257 Scandalous.
Besides of shooting lover I am perhaps a little more in love with my work (I’m a machinist) and the airguns constructions parts . The idea of such a structure from scratch do not leave me at all indifferent for a long time ago.
The Doug and the Wingman they have light up this “fire” for a several times ( Thank you guys! 😛 ).

PS. Forgive me for my poor english 😉 .

With that platform, i would go with the 14 twist using the Lyman 257420 bullets

Hi.
I am from Europe too.
Do you want to buy your barrel from Midway or you have other source?

1-14 would be ideal. With a Mrod your going to need all the help you can to get enough fps out of it.

That link will have all the info you need to get started!!!

The 1-10 twist is good for heavier (100+ grain) bullets.
