ShoeBox Exclusively for Filling Air Rifles Quickly??
All,
Is anyone interested in a ShoeBox Compressor that would be made to only fill small air rifle tanks from 0-3000 psi 7-8 minutes? I am thinking about doubling the RPM’s on a 3000 psi rated ShoeBox. This would put out twice as much air but only to 3k. Since the run time is only a few minutes and the pressure lower, it wouldn’t have time to overheat.
3k psi and short duration is much easier for the compressor to live with but that would limit you to guns only. Anyone game? Curious to hear your thoughts.

I have #33 and have been using mine every other week since I received it. And it has never failed me. But I sure would be interested in getting a second one just to fill my gun tanks. That would be great.

Would a thermal circuit breaker be be a good feature?
I’d rather be delayed while the circuit breaker cooled than cause damage to the pump. Mobile use might find it being used at higher temperatures during the summer.
If you don’t mind running the vehicle and have say a 1,000 or better a 1500W invertor you could be portable.
or a 2,000W Generator 🙂
That would be great for me not having any tanks yet.
The combined costs are holding me back but since I have an inverter/charger in the RV I just have to come up with the space for the oil-less pre-compressor. So, what would be the minimum PSI and or tank capacity for the pre-compressor?
I was about to buy one at Harbor Freight but it would be costly if I get the wrong one.
Any of the small portable compressors will do.
85 to 100psi output of around 1 or 2scfm
Better than pumpin’
Yeah, something portable that could run out of a car’s ligther socket with a small compressor to supply the air to the shoebox would be cool for an outing.
The shoebox is cool, can’t wait to receive mine!! 😎 😀
Yes you can add that for around $150 makes for a good system.
I am running mine that way now.
Check out Chemiquip PLV-255S
Hi Walter, yes I run a 858cc main tank and a stock 490cc backup tank. Both are tuned to fill at 2500 psi to maximize my 3000 psi scuba tank and to not kill me when hand pumping. As well I have matched tanks velocity to maintain the POI.
Get around 40 -50 flat string shots from the main tank and around 25 flat string plus 50 ftlb shots.
I can shoot both tank down in a bind but both tanks combined are plenty when hunting.
Anyways I would still opt for being able to fill a scuba tank as when I am pesting I want lots of air on tap especially if the fields are hopping with gophers. 😎

How hard (read, expensive) would it be to make one with a dial or variable cutoff? You could add some type of regulator couldn’t you?
i think it’s a good idea and if i didn’t already have a shoebox and 2 44cf scba tanks i would definitely buy one. one thought, however. some air rifles fill to greater than 3000psi( Daystates in particular), so a slightly higher fill pressure might be nice. i understand however, that factory shutoff above 3000psi raises liability issues if someone was filling a 3000psi gun tank.
that sounds awsome when i get back into pcp
i would be interested
i mainly shoot around the inlaws and there is a compressor in the garage
for hunting i dont use alot of shots so its not a bigge
hmmmm maybe pcp is closer in my future
that or a kodiak in .25 lol

I run two gun tanks also. When I visit a friend’s ranch in South Austin I fill both and leave the SCUBA at home. Two tanks buys me a total of 70-80 hunting shots and 200 additional plinking shots (20 yards and less).
I do the same at my local gun range… changing over tanks goes unnoticed.
The AF protective valve cap is a must buy.
Sounds really interesting to me, especially if it could be run off 12VDC (e.g., cigarette lighter socket).
Tom, for a gun only compressor figure on filling at minimum a 400cc tank from 1,000psi to 3,000psi.
From what I have learned about this compressor and using it the ideal setup is the Shoebox compressor and a 44 cu ft CF 4500psi tank. OR a pigmy for those that can afford that.
So if I was going out for a days shooting the gun would be full and my carry tank would have all the air I could want for the day.
For Airforce fellas perhaps the way to go is two gun tanks for a days outing. Maybe Randy can chime in as he runs with two gun tanks.
Sure good to see you posting and responding to the airgunners Tom, that is a great compressor you have. I am still thrilled to be a part of this testing and promoting 🙂
At some point I need to pay you for this thing 🙂
Merry Christmas to you Tom and all the elves assembling Shoeboxes!

Yeah well. Just an idea! As you can see I’m no design engineer 😥
