SKB Cases = Piece of Shit
…. or maybe “Suck Kock n Balls.’
I paid $250 for SKB Quad Rifle Case # 5014. The box in which the case arrived is not damaged. Yet, the gun case is cracked at a corner. Even though it has a $1500 contents gaurantee, I would not trust my expensive rifles in it for anything more than a day at the range. The TSA locks are flimsy enough they could be pryed open with just a small screwdriver or pocket knife, yet they have a lifetime replacement warranty. I’m wondering what the hell SKB is thinking?
The term ‘Quad’ is an overstatement. With only one rifle in the bottom of the case, I have to put the weight of my entire upper body on the case to get it latched. I wouldn’t even think of putting rifles in the upper layer.
I’ll be sending this one back, and looking for another double scoped rilfe case, not of SKB ‘quality‘.
The folks at Explore Products are working with me and SKB to get it replaced. Explore Products will not accept non-resaleable returns. I get the new case from SKB, I send the case back to Explore Products. I better not be paying return shipping.

The case was $195 (with foam) so it’s not cheap but after having destroyed a sidewheel scope in a thinner case, I was not going to take chances with the big nikko scope.
Another idea, which I did with my cabela’s aluminum case, I just removed one layer of foam, leaving one layer in the top and one in the bottom.
I put my $1500.00 shotgun in there, it gets sandwiched tight, never had any movement, however ya gotta press the lid to get it closed.

Right, but I don’t want the smooth foam as it requires cutting for individual rifles.
Getting the case for $125 from the ebay guy would leave me monetary room to get convoluted foam. Cost too much elsewhere.

I sent that busted SKB back. I had called CasesByPelican.com and requested a quote on a Pelican 1750 with custom foam. (They won’t just let you buy it, gotta make up an invoice/quote) They’re the only place I’ve found that will do custom foam on the Pelicans… I’ve been waiting 2 weeks and they still haven’t gotten me the invoice. I called for the 3rd time today. After conversation with a very disorganized sales rep, I was promised the invoice by the end of the day… it’s 11pm here and I have not received it. I won’t deal with CasesByPelican.com again. Final answer.
Now, if that ebay fella would get some more 1750s back up I’d get one and get my own foam. I contacted him for local pickup as he’s less than 50 miles away, but he no answer. F8ckun’a, I need a case.

Yep, the material is much thicker and more flexible on the Pelican. The SKB shown here is a very brittle, and thin material. Not Good!

No worries mate. I got a Pelican 1759GC on the way. I don’t like the Pick and Pluck foam so I had them put in thicker full length convoluted foam. I like the lined perimeter and the desiccant is a plus also.

Pelican is the way to go. I had the airlines loose my case, with my competition SVI Infinity pistols in it, and everything showed up at my hotel intact. Pelicans are solid.
To SKB’s credit, I did run over my Martin acoustic guitar in it’s SKB guitar case with my truck accidently and everything survived. It barley scratched the case. Mabe get a SKB guitar case and put your rifles in it.

Like I have said before… that specific SKB case is a single piece of what appears to be blow molded plastic. Similar and just a tad bit thicker than a $15 Plano gun case from K-Mart.
I’ve had Night Vision gear that came in a smaller SKB case which was similar construction to a Pelican and appeared to be just as good.
Pelican’s are roto molded with two layers, each one thicker than that SKB you have with a foam core between them. The Pelican and your SKB are NOT equals.
I ALMOST bought an SKB because kittery sporting goods dont carry the Pelican because it looks ok from a distance, I put it down about 2 minutes after picking it up.

Yours is from the “Sports” catalog, the SKB cases that are decent and used by the military are from “Industrial”.

Thanks. The service at deployable Systems was excellent as well. I had an email invoice almost immediately and the case was at my door in a couple days. It turns out that we use Storm cases for some of the optics we use on the Cobra and Huey helicopters. They make good solid cases.
