SKB Cases = Piece of Shit
…. or maybe “Suck Kock n Balls.’
I paid $250 for SKB Quad Rifle Case # 5014. The box in which the case arrived is not damaged. Yet, the gun case is cracked at a corner. Even though it has a $1500 contents gaurantee, I would not trust my expensive rifles in it for anything more than a day at the range. The TSA locks are flimsy enough they could be pryed open with just a small screwdriver or pocket knife, yet they have a lifetime replacement warranty. I’m wondering what the hell SKB is thinking?
The term ‘Quad’ is an overstatement. With only one rifle in the bottom of the case, I have to put the weight of my entire upper body on the case to get it latched. I wouldn’t even think of putting rifles in the upper layer.
I’ll be sending this one back, and looking for another double scoped rilfe case, not of SKB ‘quality‘.
The folks at Explore Products are working with me and SKB to get it replaced. Explore Products will not accept non-resaleable returns. I get the new case from SKB, I send the case back to Explore Products. I better not be paying return shipping.

Now after years of having high dollar alu,. cases destroyed by the airlines, Pelican is all I use.
There is good reason that the more expensive and sensitive military equipment is usually cased in Pelican!
I’ve flown all over the world and the Pelican cases still look like crap. But not much worse than when new. Bottom line– The Knives always arrive in great condition. Somthing I couldn’t say with Alu. cases.
Do us all a favor. Next time don’t block out the manufactures logo. We all need to know what-where-when-and why a product doesn’t work as advertized!

SKB is another brand often carried by the military. Like I say though, I didn’t see much difference in the Pelican I looked at and the SKB. I like the SKB locks better, but I still bet ya I can break it loose with a quick tug of me arm. That said, I’m giving SKB another chance.

Thanks Saw. I’m going to have another SKB sent to me. Just really can’t find anything with the features for the money. Can still return it if I’m not happy with it.
I’m still not sure about its durability… arriving cracked and all. Maybe I got one with flaws in the molding. I’ll give it a torture test before I put it to use… who wants to stick around for that.
When I decide to get individualized cases for the guns I may go for the Pelicans.
Explore Products is a great place to buy from though, customer service is outstanding.

bullet proof, thats the one I got from Cabela’s only smaller for a O/U shot gun
It came with 4 layers of foam, I had to remove one layer, otherwise it was hard closing.
They are a bit pricey, it does have a rubber gasket glued on, the pelican has a o-ring in a groove 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I’ve personally dragged, smashed and beat up pelican cases without damage to the interior contents. I wouldnt have paid $125 out of my own pocket for a gun case that’s only going to the range and back at worst if I hadn’t had personal experience with them.
I’ve also had smaller SKB cases that were a similar material to the Pelicans and they were just as good. The SKB case you have is thinner plastic and made with a different production method – not as good as the other SKB’s or any Pelican.
The bullet proof cases look like they have potential. I wouldnt pay that online, I’d have to check them out in perso before a purchase tho because it could still have a poor design.
The Do-All’s look the same as a gun case I had that broke apart from a slight impact to one corner – without a cross brace putting aluminum around the perimeter doesn’t mean jack.
One thing I really like about the SKB case is that the enterior perimeter is lined in foam. If a gun were to shift to one edge it would not be riding on the plastic interior of the case. I haven’t seen that in any other brands.
I’m wanting an eggrate foam liner so I don’t have to individualize it’s use. I know Pelican offers eggrate foam, but from the 1750 I looked at, it really didn’t look any more durable than the SKB. Particularly the latches.
Seems to me like one of those Nike type ploys where you’re paying for the name and an inferior product.

My camera case has gotta be at least 1/8″ thick, maybe the 1750 has thinner walls. I tell ya it would take a serious blow to crack it.

The Pelican 1750 is available to me semi-locallly. I checked it out previously and it’s durability didn’t appeal to me either. I’ve read numerous positive reviews on SKB also so I went that route, having never handled one. It’s obviously no better than the Pelican. You’d think for that kind of money they’d make the plastic a little thicker or something. I could stick my fingers in that crack and chip away pieces of plastic, it’s almost brittle.
I’ve got a $40 ebay pistol case I’d trust more so than this one. Only it doesn’t have locks.
Maybe I’m hard to please.
The pelican brand is pretty darn tuff, couldn.t imagine cracking one.
I did buy an aluminum one for my O/U shotgun from Cabela’s, that too is pretty tuff. Get one that is welded.
The thing I like about the Pelican is it’s totally waterproof, got one for my camera gear, and just ordered one for the laptop, pretty solid.

So are the SKB. But if the plastic is going to break in transit, in a box, without weight in it. I don’t want it.
I should have looked for an aluminum case to begin with.
Its packed up to be picked up tomorrow but it’ll be 2 weeks before I get refund. 👿

A look at the SKB lock and latch. If the little latching part of the lock were metal it’d be much better.

Straps to keep the top from falling all the way open. Oring seal around the perimeter. Foam on the internal sidewalls.
Can add locks to center two latches.

Hard to tell, but the plastic on the SKB is also about 1/8″ thick as stated for the Pelican.
