Q:

Sound Levels (dB’s)

Looking for the sound levels of both the .22 and .25 measured about 2 ft from end of barrel.

Some say the 25 is backyard friendly and some say it isn’t. Measurements would help users make a decision.

Good work Keyser, thanks.

I must agree that taming the blast of .25 beast in such a small volume is not easy.

Can you give me the thread type at the end of gen2 moderator? Is it M20x1?

Still have not even received my 25 Vulcan yet (hopefully this week) and already thinking about a moderator upgrade. While I enjoy a quieter air rifle, neighbor friendly isn’t a huge concern due to the distance separating our homes so the gen2 will probably work well for me. Thanks for sharing your experience as it would be impossible for me to actually shoot and hear each version…very helpful!

Once again the Keyser has gone above the call of duty! He is right sound report it’s subjective

I post this with caution because a lot of bullshit has been posted about quiet guns. LDCs, shrouds, magic felt, pixie dust, and other vapor that has cost me a lot of money with little results. So proceed with caution when reading this post.

Peter charges 80 bucks for the shroud with your old one returned to him. I think that is a very reasonable price. Is it worth it? Well for me it was. I had the first generation and it was too loud. My friend has the generation 2 and it is better than the original. I gave you guys decibel numbers and I think that is the most objective way I know how to give quantitative sound results. The other factor in my opinion is the pitch of the gun. This is the subjective sound report that I think people all have different opinions about. To my ear treble or higher frequency travels better than lower baritone sounds. I am more sensitive to a higher pitch frequency. The TGAG shroud has less of a twang and more of a swoosh. My friends and I did the “Pepsi” challenge with a group of 4 shooters. With their backs turned I shot all three guns, original, gen 2 and the TGAG. Every person picked the TGAG as the quietest including me. All the guns were shooting the same (between 930-940). Even though the db wasn’t a large difference I think the pitch made a difference from person to person standing 10 feet from the gun.

Hope this helps

The new shroud are better than the original. My Vulcan is shooting 940 FPS. At three feet the old shroud was at 106db at 3 feet. The new shroud was at 102 db. TGAG shroud is 99 db. For my use backyard friendly means sub 95 db, so it’s very close. The new shroud has a Taipan style end cap so one could have a 1/2 UNF cap made to add an LDC to the gun.

The old baffles are on the top, bottom is gen 2 and the silver are from TGAG.

So, I assume yours is a .25 – correct? << EDIT Ignore – I was typing while you were posting 🙂

What is the dB for a second generation shroud on a .22?

Can a person tell the difference between 106, 102 & 99?

How much extra does one need to spend on the TGAG shroud?

Those are colibri baffles. Or at least a copy. When I met with Peter he had delivered my Vulcan and at that time he an I discussed how effective the colibri baffles were. He then decided to make a set for the 25. There are two holes in the shroud but I agree I think a few more might be worth exploring.

Thanks for the report Keyser

If memory serves, I seem to recall from my days with stereo equipment that +/- 3 db is barely perceivable. Would you agree regarding the new stock moderator vs the TGAG version? Really value your opinion as to if the TGAG version is worth pursuing. Do you know if TGAG is still experimenting or if they will have a Vulcan moderator for sale?

good info keyser :8:

Looks like the new moderator begs for drilling some holes ( :hoot: ) in the tube that are alligned with baffle holes. Like in Colibri. Ernest likes that idea.

Keyser was supposed to report the difference between old OEM moderator and new OEM moderator. Keyser, have you had a chance?

Hammer slap is right next to your ear, it’s always going to sound loud. Move away ten feet and it drops fast.

A lot of effort has gone into trying to quiet the AF product hammer slap. It can be changed in tone, but if you use an absorbing material on the head of the hammer, you change the energy transferred to the valve spring. Kind of a win/lose situation.

We did muffle the hammer slap by putting 1/4″ to 1/2″ close cell foam on the outside of the breech, and this did work quite well. Looked like shit, but did muffle the sound.

Fortunately, the sound that carries the most, and is the most identifiable, is the muzzle blast. That can definitely be reduced to almost zero!

Hoot:

Hammer slap is loud but I doubt it carries very far. This is just an observation when firing gun and how it doesn’t seem to spook like the cricket did. I was going to try an oring in hammer spring but no time yet

Between my cricket and the Vulcan it’s no question to me that the Vulcan is quieter. Cricket had this swoosh sound that carries. Vulcan sound seems to just die not to far from muzzle. Someone did his homework on the shroud

But the hammer slap needs some work

I squeezed off a few rounds with my new .25 in my backyard yesterday…….Granted, this is my first PCP, but I was amazed at the low report of my Vulcan. Much quieter than my Diana 34 springer. Houses in my neighborhood are 5 yds. apart….in the privacy of my fenced in back yard, the thud of the .25 hitting a 2 x 6 and the twang of the hammer were the loudest. My yard is only 25 yards, corner to corner. I had my wife squeeze off a round while I stood near my target, and I could barely hear the report of the gun! While she was inside, she could not hear me firing off any shots. I don’t think I’ll have any problems if I play in moderation…….. 😎

Glad to hear that the .25 is backyard friendly means that more folks will get what they want and they will be HaPpY :ugeekn: .

Oakey, we both know that sound is a subjective matter without the use of some sort of electronic measuring device, but I made my purchase knowing that if it were too loud, I would soon be looking to the aftermarket to get it right for my needs.

Damn, I love this gun! Can’t wait to get home from work and bust a few more Sparrows. Got six off of my tube feeder with 2″ perches yesterday. It’s almost unfair! Once comfortable, I’ll be stretching out my distances…..

Nut Sack killing English House Sparrows, Cow birds, Starling, Grackles and Crows is all for good measure! Especially the Starling and House Sparrows they have helped run populations of Blue Birds and Martins off Long Island so go to hell with yourself you nutty nut sack! And don’t get me started on the topic of subjectivity it’s totally subjective.
