Q:

Suppressor or PCP?

I have a Savage Mk2, and am planning on send it off for some accurizing. It would be a great time to get it threaded, and I have money set aside for the threading, tuning, and suppressor and related trust paperwork. But, I can buy a M-rod or Rainstorm plus compressor and tank for a little more than $1K. What say you all? Shooting will be in the not so country country.

Rossall, sorry it took so long. Work and a trip to Korea got me sidetracked, and away from the internet.

We can hunt non-game animals with a suppressor in TX. That said, with a .22 RF, the only thing I may be shooting are coons, possums, and maybe a feral pet. We don’t have a lot of access to bigger areas, so the centerfire can would be a little less beneficial, unless we were plinking, which we just don’t do anymore. The .22 would be a Savage TRSR or similar in style, but being that I don’t have a centerfire in that style, saying I want a trainer is even pointless. I have never been a big game hunter, and when I went deer hunting last year I wanted to shoot a pig. A can for the .223, 5.45, and 30Russian would be nice, but I don’t shoot them enough to rationalize(in as much as a person can rationalize something like this) There is already a 850 in .177 in the safe, so an HPA conversion could put it in the mix. I would probably buy a .22 PCP, because it is a more widely accepted caliber, and can be shot cheaper than the .25. I have a .17hm2, and several .22LR already, just wanting to “take it to the next level” so to say. The PCP would limit the range, and be better for country shooting. I thin with the .17hm2, the distant shooting is taken care of, I just have always wanted a can. Not because I like the hollywood stuff, shooting real guns told me that most would be like that. But unless I get into a hog population control job, I don’t see the can of any size being beneficial to anything buy my ego.

😀

I would opt for the PCP. Safer, just as accurate and a lot quieter. 22 lr bullets tend to skip off of rocks in open fields relatively easily at times.

go the PCP…

as was said earlier…your life could be turned upside down by applying for a “suppressor”.

like someone above me here said: here on the left coast you’re heavily scrutinized if you apply for something like that…

i have a .25 Mrod and a shrouded .22 AF Talon that are both very quiet i shoot them frequently with no complaints from the neighbors. (my neighbors are at least 100 yards from me…) my springers tend to be noisier than the AF and the Mrod from what my wife says when i ask her to check noise when i shoot…

I had a silenced Ruger 22 for over 30 years, out of hundereds of guns I have owned, I had more fun with it that any others.

I also found it to be the most useful, carried in a shoulder holster there is not much you can’t do with it. But most designs have the suppressor built in permantly and butt up with the end of the reciever. So if you get one like that it is hard to swap it around.

Jerry is correct, you will be in a data base forever, but every gun owner is probably all ready.

Suppressors on high powered rifles lack utility and mobility in my opinion, and they are really not all that quiet, but it depends on what you wish to do with it.

My Ruger did 1000 FPS with Mini Mags, it had a 4 inch turned down barrel that was ported its entire length, the threads for the can were right at the reciever end, so it you took it off and shot it, it was very obnoxious and really not useful without the can. It would be hard to get a air rifle to deliver that kind of performance, but some can, I think Jerry’s is very close, much more accurate and about the same price as a silenced Ruger.

Just depends on what you want to do with it, I live in the west, so here there are so many places to shoot and any time you can shoot quietly your better off. The advantage of the legal PB silencer is you can use it on a AR if you wish, and never have to worry about a overzealous ATF agent or local cop, or Federal AR/LDC policy change..

When shopping for a can, remember all sales hype aside, there is no magic, volume=quietness.

Roachcreek

forget the can and expensive BATF registration that goes with it( not to mention that your info goes into a federal data bank when you apply for the silencer permit). get a high powered PCP( Air Ranger, Royale 500, Mrod .25)- they are all shrouded, adequate in power for your needs, and ammunition is cheap compared to a 22 rimfire

Yeah, everyone has a AG, but this forum has alot of people who own other forms of weapons too. For the price of the rimfire can, I can have a shoeox compressor. For the trust I can get a tank, and for the rifle plus tune a PCP.

I shoot “Aguila .22 Super Colibri 20gn” out of a 7″ barrel and get 17ft/lbs energy. Pop a can on that and you’ll be golden. It’s designed for pistols only. CB caps are used by rifle shooters with some complaints about consistency.

Since you’re on an airgun forum everyone here owns an AG… but your question is very specific. If you have a reliable firearm and like it – why change it beyond making it quieter. And once you own a can legally – it’s yours forever – to be used on any gun you wish. Plus a 22 delivers 100+ ft/lbs for only pennies a round.

Comments on airgun or rimfire with can?

I too use the jsb pellets with good success. I just ordered the predator pelets for a few foxes that have been raiding the hen house at the farm.
JSB’s are probably half that price.

Anyone else have comments?

If you can legally obtain a supressed .22, that sounds good. Here on the left coast it is almost impossible to get a silencer legally.

I also have a .25 Marauder and I really like it! It relatively quiet and has plenty of power. It’s accurate to 100 yards and further. Predators are great pellets, but there are others that are less expensive that are accurate and kill game very well, like the JSB Kings, Kodiak/Baracudas, Benjamin domes. These work well also and are not as expensive.

Buy one, save up again and buy the other. Pab loves it when we do that. 😉

probably more like 700 acres. yes it is NJ at its finast. They built million dollar homes on one of the fields they sold years ago. The same people compalin to the board of health that we spread manure on the fields. lol
There is really nothing the police can do but who needs the hassle. Technically I cannot shoot crows and pigeons because I do not live on the farm. In NJ being a relative does not let you control varmints that have a season. You must live on the property. The farm has been in my family for 60 plus years that does not count. So I shoot what I want when I want quietly. Years ago we rode in pick up trucks blasting deer away at night with spot lights today hiding with my pellet gun. lol
Before anyone starts deer eat alphalpha and we pay to replace it they are large varmints. 😉

500 acres and your neighbors call the cops! what is the world coming to.

With that much space any shrouded pellet gun will be quiet enough. Backyard situation demands very quiet – luckily the M-Rod delivers on that promise. A 25 cal will definitely give you the power you need.

Happy shooting!

I ordered a couple tins I think it was like 13$ for 150 pellets not sure.
I do not get too caught up in the cost I do not have an option where i live. I could walk around the family farm with a pellet rifle all day every day for the next 5 years without a problem. Neighbors have called when we have shot 20 shots from a .22 long rifle. Not much they can do because it is over 500 acres but they still call and the police still come. If I shoot 20 crows with the pellets rifle no police. lol
I have 3 properties that I can walk and shoot the epllet gun until I run out of pellets or air but none for 22 long rifle. The only season I can legally use a 22 long rifle in nj is groundhog with a special rifle permit. I agree if I lived where I could use a 22 long rifle why bother with .25 pellet gun? no reason unless you just like them. I would use my 22 long rifle if I could. I have killed probably 40 squirrels in my back yard with pellet rifles. I would be in jail in a hurry if I fired my 22 long rifle out the window. sheild and all I would lose my job and go to jail
