Q:

Talon SS 177 or 22?

I’m looking at getting a Talon SS withe the 12oz co2 tank, but cant decide if I want 177 or 22 cal. The plus for 177 is im already geared up for that caliber. I have about 2000 pellets, cleaning rod, cleaning pellets etc. But, it seams like everyone suggests going with the 22.

My shooting consists of almost all target/plinking with the occasional pest dispatching. IE fairly large tree squirrels that like to harass my dogs. Other than that I wouldnt use it for hunting.

Im also tossed up on what scope to get. Right now I’m leaning toward a UTG Golden Image Red/Green Dot Sight:

But I also like the leapers bug buster:

So what are your opinions or suggestions?

Talon/Talon SS

I had a CO2 adapter for a while but then sold it. I owned an AF pump for 24 hours and returned it.

You’re better off spending the money on a pre-owned steel Scuba tank with 3500psi capacity. You have the predictability of air (vs CO2) and no pumping or pump maintenance. I have no regrets with my decision and would do the same again.

Is co2 erratic as far as accuracy? I know co2 pressure goes up and down depending on the temperature. Is that an issue?

Sorry thayne. The last time I checked they still had it going. 😳 Maybe you could call and ask if they will give you one for free even though it’s not listed on the site.

If they do offer it again it will show up here: http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/specials.pl

Buy from PyramydAir and get one with an air tank. If you buy one with an air tank you get a free Co2 adapter so all you would need is a Co2 tank. 😉

I didnt see that on their web site. I thought it was either one or the other

I have the same circumstances as you. I mostly target with occasional pest removal. Here’s my setup:

* TSS 177
* Crowmagnum Hollow Points for rats. Heart/lung shots get the job done in seconds.
* Kodiaks/Barracuda Match for long range target.
* RWS 7.0gn Match Wadcutters for plinking and punching paper.

The advantages of 177 is its cheap to shoot and I can use my pellets in my 1377 or RWS 350.

The wadcutters run about 100 rounds @25 yards at a starting pressure of 1500psi before a refill. I run two tanks, one at plinking pressure and one at hunting pressure. This makes my SCUBA last even longer. Plus the noise from the lower pressure is very quiet.

I shoot mostly inside and the squirrel shots would be at 15 yards max. I’m not really interested in 20 cal. Right now im leaning to the 22. I can always sell my 177 stuff 😀

Ill more than likely get the air tank and stuff later, but i think co2 is just way more convenient for around the house shooting

How far will you be target shooting? If your max distance is something like 40 yards and you shoot alot a .177 will save you some $ in pellets but the .22 will buck the wind much better. If most of your shooting is indoors get a .177. Also you will have to keep the shots close on a large squirrel with .177 on Co2 and you will have to have very good shot placement.

but soon got 18 inch barrels in .17 and .22 then sold the .20…but for general all around id go with air, not co2 and .20. i just wanted more versatility and accuracy at longer (50 plus yards) ranges….for occasional field target/ silohuetteing and for hunting.
i have a bug buster and its great…originally on my ss i switched it to a 4-16×50 leapers…still got the bug buster but its on my h&r buffalo classic carbine .45 long colt, she loves that scope. its a great topper for the ss too for what you want….and id go with .20…but thats the beauty of the ss…you can always change around.

have you concidered the 20 cal?

.22 cal. anything smaller is just childs play.
with 22, you can go light to heavy with no prob with the SS.
