FF, it’s 18″ for a shotgun barrel. 16″ for a rifle. There is 263 pages of Firearm laws for Michigan. Most Cops are only versed in the laws they use day to day. You do what you want to do to satisfy yourself. ๐Ÿ™‚

Under 26 USCA ยง 861 (a), firearms is defined as โ€œ”a shot gun or rifle having a barrel of less than eighteen inches in length, or any other weapon, except a pistol or revolver, from which a shot is discharged by an explosive if such weapon is capable of being concealed on the person, or a machine gun, and includes a muffler or silencer for any firearm whether or not such firearm is included within the foregoing definition.” United States v. Adams, 11 F. Supp. 216, 217 (S.D. Fla. 1935)

I just heard back from someone that knows this stuff well and it makes me feel much much better ๐Ÿ™‚

He said that if a shroud won’t fit a firearm it’s not a problem and that the person that modified the shroud to fit a firearm would be guilty of multiple crimes like possession of a silencer, no serial number on a silencer, making a silencer, and so on but possessing a shroud doesn’t constitute a crime in itself.

If they have a “stamp” and have gone through the proper $200 backgroud check and signed by an officer I believe on page 4 of the form then possession isn’t a problem nor is making it but it would still need a serial number so if it’s transferred to someone they can get their $200 tax again lol.

Oh and also it doesn’t mean that you can’t spend a night in jail over being in possession of one lol or if you are already on the radar of LEAs.

I hate to tell you… By all this calling and stiring the pot with the state police YOU are now on radar ๐Ÿ˜›

You better send your shroud to me. ๐Ÿ˜†

Freem I read the law and you are right but do you see how easy it is for someone to have the wrong information and you end up sitting in jail and knife the MSP officer said that to me so whether they are misinformed or not you still get to have a visit from the ATF to see where things stand.

I’m going to work on this through the NRA and keep bugging my congressman until they either get sick of me or I end up in jail. I travel between my dads and home a couple times a month and take the rifle with me in a case I would hate to get pulled over and asked to look inside the case only to see the shroud because everyone I’ve showed the rifle to thinks it’s an assault rifle lol.

I have as good a chance of getting this changed as Texans do of stopping illegals from flooding in. You need a lot of money to change laws or know the right people which leaves me out.

I don’t want to scare anyone just think people should know what they could be up agaainst if the wrong person caught them and what’s wrong with being prepared? nothing and I feel better knowing than not knowing.

๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜‰ Gotta love it!

FWIW, the ATF ruling says without modification. Not could be modified. Hell, a pillow can be taped on a gun. Doesn’t make possession of a pillow illegal. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Well I’m over with 24″ anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ but the MSP officer made it painfully clear that if they pulled someone over or even came accross someone with a shroud that they would take their property and off to jail then await the ATF.

I tried explaining that the ATF doesn’t control air rifles and I was told in a somewhat firm voice that they do control any sound reducing device that could be used on a firearm and that’s a fine line.

Further discussion led to the officer telling me that it wouldn’t take much to modify a shroud to fit a pistol or rifle and that this has been done before.

I told him that my interest is hypothetical and that said person shouldn’t have a problem with said unit at home? and he said hypothetically that sounds about right lol.

Hell, evey time we try to do somthing about it, the Fed’s stop us!
And thats’ the point. The Fed’s ahve tha say so. And they say An Air Gun isn’t a Fire Arm! Period. End of Story.

Yeah, Chi-Town. Gang Land City. Great Guns Laws. They worked so well! The only people that can’t get a gun are the people who are in danger from the gangs that run the government. Now that is a government that knows exactly what they are doing, why and how to do it.! Home owned, home operated criminal capital of America.

Sorry about that knife Teeyexas ๐Ÿ™‚ that was my best texan accent ๐Ÿ™ and I know you guys hands are tied and at least charlie wilson knew that Texans wanted 2 things “they want their guns” and “they want low taxes”

I’ve been given the run around by my congressmans office and the NRA isn’t worried about it and it’s driving me nuts but I don’t give up easy ๐Ÿ™‚

Freem the MSP told me 18″ so once again it’s vague and just ripe to pluck someone out and throw the book at em and it’s over poor leadership.

I did forget to say that the Michigan laws on airguns SUCK ๐Ÿ˜ก

This is the way that I interpret the law. By all means read it yourself. Don’t take my word on it.
Your AirForce rifle doesn’t need to be registered with any barrel over 16.1″ long and the overall length is 30″, in the state of Michigan.
