The 1/4 mile Soda can shot! (TD257 at 446 yards)
The Short story:
I came up with the idea of shooting a soda can at distance cause it’s something I’ve tried to do with my powder burners. But with my PB’s i try it at 500 yards which i thought to be too far for my Airgun. So, while out one weekend with the TD257, i decided to simply back the zoom down on my scope to 6x and then aim and shoot at a rock face some 402 yards away. I was shocked when just by guessing at the aim point in my scope, i was able to hit the rock the very first time. After getting a good aim point reference, i was dropping bullets in the same area shot after shot. So then it hit me, “I COULD HIT A SODA CAN AT THAT RANGE AND THAT WOULD MAKE A COOL VIDEO IF I DO HIT IT”! I then talked to Unrepenentsinner about his Hoch bullets and mentioned to him that i hit a rock face and that i want to try and hit a soda can at that distance. URS then sais, “WHY JUST 400 yards, WHY NOT DO IT AT 440 YARDS SO YOU CAN CLAIM A 1/4 MILE SHOT WITH A AIRGUN”. Then all the lights went on and someone WAS HOME…lol! I then told URS, I, WILL DO IT! I then contacted RJ Porter about using his FINE cast 102 gr Spitzer bullets for the task because they have a much higher BC than my Lyman 257420 bullets. Long story short, the TASK was accomplished!

How about some pics of the slugs?
I’m building a couple .25’s with TJ barrels right now. 1-14 twist and they measure .25030″ unlike a LW barrels. So .251’s will be perfect.
OK,I was mistaken, it is the Heavier bullet that is shooting so well. Why such a huge difference, I have no Idea.
The lighter bullets shoot like a shot gun. The the Heavier Bullets are on the money! 😀 For what ever reason, there seems to always 3 touching and two next to each other slightly shifted. Last pic shows the same thing, but with 4 in the main group.
I wil try to get a pic of scan of the slugs in a few minutes.

And here is the first group at 55 yards. The first three shots were touching. IN THE WIND! 😯 ( It really sucks that these pic’s are so blown up in size. In real life, they are tiny groups!) Time to stretch things out a bit. If I can find a place to do it! 😉

I don’t know what the situation is like out there Tof. with Fire Ants, but here we have them the zillions. And you would have made an awful lot of them very happy campers!
I don’t have the data on these bullets. OldGoat sent them for me to test, and My Pm account dumped all of my messages. He sent the info on them. They are pointy little suckers. 😯 Should give some Killer penetration on game like Yotle dogs and wild pigs! (How did like that little play on words. Killer penetration. 😈 😆 )

The shot was hard for sure and i did PRACTICE on the rock before hand to make sure the much heavier bullets could make it over there. I last practiced that shot with my own 74 grainers but had ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIENCE with RJ’s SPITZERS at that distance prior to this video. So during the video, that was the 1 time shooting RJ’s bullets at 446 yards. But i did take some pot shots on the rock face before hand. once i felt comfortable, i drove over to the rock and set up my cans and took my time coming back to calm my mind.
And VOILA, with in a handful of shots, i saw that liquid explode from the 1 can and i new i had done it. Even at 6x, i saw that orange liquid explode.
Finally seen this shit, or at least think I seen it , and woe, not 60 shots at one can, but mucho cans with just a few shots, Bravo Ced and I bet no one ever tops this feat ever!!!!

Its pretty much all I do for fun lately, besides chase mamma, but she is not challenging because she doesn’t run as fast as she can..
Cast and shoot and paint I do it every day and never tire of it.
Sounds like those 251 are winners Mike, you can get commercial cast 25 acp bullets , they are .251.

Your groups are fantastic. No question. And damned consistent. To shoot 2 groups back to back and only get .008″ difference in the 2 groups is AMAZING 😯
The differnece between the RN 251 bullet and the JSB’s in the wind are a testament to wind bucking ability when the BC improves just a tad.
hopefully you will do another post on your setup. I’ll for one be reading it.

Tof, I got the chance to try some .251 bullets today, and was shocked at the accuracy. Yes, even in my choked barrel. The lapping must have really paid off. The first two groups of 3 shots each went into .368 and .376 at 55 yards, followed by 4 at 85 yards at .583, with a 5th a flier. This was in a 10-12 mph wind. Not a bad start!
I shot some Kings after slowing her down a bit, and could only get 1 3/4 to 2 inch’s in the same wind. Needless to say, I’m stoked! 😀

My buddy and i were just talking about yotes last night and taking them with that gun. We both were saying that 250 yards would seem really easy with that gun and i whole heartedly agreed. But 250 yards would be my absolute MAX. The accuracy and ability to hit a dog at that range is 100% there. Once i found the impact at 230 yards on the cans, it was easy for me to hit the rest. Doug’s gun shoots about 70 FPS faster with all bullets then my gun and i would feel comfortable out to 300 with his. IT’S CRAZY THAT WE ARE NOW TALKING ABOUT TAKING YOTES WITH AIRGUNS “comfortably” AT THESE RANGES! 😆

You bring up a good point that i also just recently made to someone else. At 1st, it was hard to fathom John Bowmans coyote tales even though i had my TD257. The more i shot the gun in its 1st configuration of 900 FPS with 74 gr FN bullets, the more i could possibly SEE the shots happening. AGAIN, i believed the stories, its just hard to comprehend. But with each outting, my comprehension of what’s possible with this caliber become clearer. Then when Doug finished my new valve and bottle (a bigger bottle is KEY in this conversion) and i was now pushing bullets just past 1000 fps for 8 HELLAVA consistent shots, it became very evident to me that with 200 fps MORE, a 300 yards shot WAS and IS VERY POSSIBLE and maybe even EASY if you can fathom that! Now that i’ve hit a rock face at 402 yards, 6 coke cans at 230 yards and a can or 2 at 446 yards, and reviewed the video of the shots over and over, a 200-400 yard shot on a YOTE with a 257 airgun shooting between 1000 and 1200 fps IS VERY POSSIBLE AND SHOULD NOT BE DOUBTED 😆 😉
Finally got to watch it Tof, and that is some amazing shooting.
If that doesn’t make a believer out of people, I don’t know what will.
