thoughts on a side-cocker mod
i cant remember where i saw this mod, or who did it…i THINK it was here, but ive been unable to find it…it goes something like this…
there’s a metal tube or rod (not sure if its aluminum or steel) w/a hole drilled into it to fit around the breech end of the barrel. there’s a hole drilled in the breech to fit the tube or rod, and the tube or rod (which is now the breech handle) is held in place by the barrel. of course a area is machined out so that the shooter can cock it…thoughts on this? is this confusing anyone? because ive talked to a few people and they cant picture it…
also, is there anything special about the breech externally? or does it pretty much look like a thick wall delrin tube from the outside? im wondering because id like to have the new side-cocker operate a little like a bolt action rifle, though there wont be too much upwards movement, just enough to clear the bolt groove… again, thoughts?

man, i thought so…i knew i wasnt crazy…would you perhaps be able to tell me the O.D. of the delrin rod you used (or Lang)? and also, how far back is the handle? or rather, what is the measurement from the front of the breech to the center of the freshly drilled hole in the breech- wait, did that make sense?! so is just the one side that is threaded? or is the short pocket on the other side of the breech that’s also threaded? and i would need the larger size, as im going to go w/a heavy hammer (90, maybe 110 gram) and a matching spring. you think aluminum would be okay to use for a new breech and handle? im just worried about the threads and durability…also im going to design a different bolt handle…
is he scared off or what Pabs?
nice work for sure. 🙂
Walter….
He doesn’t check in here anymore Walt’ , not enough fights for him 😆
Not a whole bunch of specs to give Cab’ Its a stock breech with the cocking knob hole drilled out and retapped to a bigger size, then rotated to its side. New sear slot. Cocking knob made from delrin and screwed in all the way through(small well inside breech for knob to snug into. Then orings removed and then knob drilled through in place, to the dia’ of your barrel. Orings replaced.) Thats about it, as ‘simple’ as that! Then of course frame slot done on a mill. I went with a large knob(tee hee) as I had a blod spring in at the time, so it needed to be meaty. With a stock spring, you could go a fair bit smaller, and keep the frame stronger.
It was done by my brother Lang here in the UK.
mayhap ole Lang will check in?

OMG PAB!!!!! thats it! thats the design!! Who did it for you- did you make that? I WANT IT!!! well, not the gun, just the mod. Could you send me specs if youre not wanting to do the work, or could you PM me the details of what-all’s involved with that mod?? HOT DAMN, that mod looks sweet!!!!! FINALLY!!! THANK GOD IVE FINALLY FOUND THIS MOD!!! IM NOT CRAZY GUYS!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH 😈 😆
Oh hell… I was completely off the mark…. I thought you were talking about a side-lever gun… springers for example…
LOL! man did I miss that one…. 😆 😆 😳 😳 😳
Now I completely understand what you mean. 😀
Sorry for late reply, let me check me Photobuket and see if I still got photos……….

Made exactly as you described. Knob goes all the way through thr breech. Knob has hole in it to allow breech part of barrel to pass through. Knob is also screwed into the delrin breech for extra strength(and to stop knob rotating and binding on barrel.)
Subsonic makes the ones that mount in the same position as the stock handle. Only difference is they have two points of contact. These bolts don’t require the modding of your frame like the side cocking bolts.
Tagdagger helped me out by adding two threaded brass sleeve whatchamacallits into the delrin breech for added strength!
revwarnut…no, it operate just like the standard breech would, going forward…and it would have better leverage i should think- instead of a dinky little screw/breech knob, you have a longer bolt handle. i think i confused you w/the “bolt throw”…by bolt throw i mean the up and down (un-locking/cocking and locking) movement of the bolt handle.
harryparatestis…ive seen the link cuz ive been suggested that handle (i think i started that line of posts..) but its not gonna suit my needs. and it is subssonic’s mod. i want to drop the high scope rails- like Yellow Ninja’s project…
I think I know what you are talking about… instead of the gay looking foam microphone knob on top you want a handle sticking out the side like a regular bolt action rifle?
look at this link

I have seen them before on some other pictures in here… It’s either 80 Grit or RoachCreek who have that Mod on their guns.. I think he had a condor, and talon and the third one was an AirArcher, so leads me to believe it is 80 Grit. but wtf do I know anyways I think Subssonic is the one who machines them.. they definitely look cool
I personally thought it looked cool and with my fat fingers I would love the cocking knob to be on the side also
Ok, I think I get it.
Wouldn’t it be hard to cock?
The side-lever provides a lot of leverage to move the piston back.
You want to cock it much like a cross-bow??? Pull straight back until it latches, then …..fire!
okay…im not really good at describing things or drawing…bear with me here. the bolt handle rod tube thingy…yea, we’ll just call it the bolt handle from here on out, is perpendicular to the barrel…so the hole needs to be drilled perpendicular to the rod/tube. and the hole in the breech is also drilled perpendicular, so the bolt handle can be inserted into it, and of course the body is milled to fit the bolt handle when it cocks the rifle. now, since the bolt handle is drilled out for the barrel, the barrel and the breech is what keeps it it place. the barrel stops it from being pulled out of the breech, and is a “rail for the bolt handle to ride on, and the breech limits its forward and rearward movement.
the other part of my question about whether or not the breech is more than just a “thick-walled delrin tube” w/o-rings in it…is because i want to have the same bolt throw as real-steel rifles, just not as much rotation. Just enough to clear the bolt handle recession thats in the body… will the breech be able to do that? or is there something special about it, like the edge breech does?
Well, it sure is confusing me… can you draw a picture of it, scan it and post it?
I don’t see how you need a hole in the tube or rod which fits AROUND the breech and then you also need a hole IN the breech to fit the rod/tube…. And how the barrel then holds it on…. hard to picture that.
Thanks
Revwarnut
pab put it back in your pants dude!!! 😆

Now I understand how you did that. Nice.
A guy could mod his breech the same way for a top-cocker too. Milling the slot wider might prove a challenge though… hmm.
Maybe Ill give it a go for the YN frame Ive got. All I did for that one was screw an aluminum knob on the side. Always feels like it wants to pull out with a heavy spring though.
