Q:

Tinker or Not to Tinker?

O.K.! so looking for the real deal from those of you who started from scratch. I got the talon ss (haven’t even fired it just yet for testing) and I’ve got the wicked fat nasty tinker bug buzzin in my brain. OH Yes, searching the web, finding doohickies for this, tophat for that, twisty twist on this and… Viola! I’ve tinkered myself an efficient, yet powerhungry & tack-driving monster of a .22!
Although not so much. How hard is it to do your own mods? I do like to tinker but at the same time I don’t want to have my gun down for a week because I “Mistinkered” my way into frustration 👿 . Plus I don’t have a chrony- yet. What can I do, or what would you guys recommend doing to maybe smoothe it out a little with tools and things you would have in the garage or some items that might be drop in replacements I could order off the internet that are easy to install? Or should I just leave the damn thing alone for right now? I can’t really send it off to have anything done for a while because of the initial costs for everything. Plus my wife would cut my legs off I spent any more money right now on my “BB Gun” (she doesn’t understand fellas..). I’ve got the 18in barrel on it right now and I’m waiting for the 1/4 adapter to get here so I can fill up the tank and give the gun a test fire and then sight her in. So, My friends- what say you ❓

Talon/Talon SS

My mistake. I apologize…I misunderstood.

Mamcrackin if your referring to my post, I was talking about two of the same tanks. I have read enough and talked to enough people to believe them. They all say two different tanks will behave differently enough that you can’t shoot it exactly the same tank to tank.

Here are the facts comparing a Condor high flow Tank and a Talon tank…No guessing, no hear say…
Condor with Custom weighted hammer (Don’t know the weight) heavier than stock.
24″ barrel
Beeman Kodiak Extra Heavy pellets
Both tanks filled to 2,100psi
PW 7/0
Condor High flow tank /Talon stock tank
FPS
Low 1010 /823
High 1050 /835
Avg 1031 /829
ES 40.43 /11.58
SD 12.28 / 3.6

1 1050 /835
2 1043 /834
3 1041 /831
4 1039 /830
5 1031 /830
6 1020 /827
7 1028 /830
8 1026 /825
9 1021 /823
10 1010 /827

You could also gain some “free” Fps by switching to a 24” barrel. As far as the two tank idea, forget it, I’ve been told two different tanks are the same as two totally different guns.

That’s why I love the TSS and love this forum!

If you were ever to want more power without a big gun mod you could get the Condor High Flow tank and a hammer weight from AirForce….The tank would be a little costly but the hammer weight is cheap….Fewer shots per fill but more power…Gotta give and take..Just like your cars, Power ain’t free….

I love to tinker ALOT. My primary hobbies are my cars…that I can’t just leave stock.

When I got the TSS I was going to mod the heck out of her for higher velocity. But I finally got to go out to the back yard…at 45 feet…ya I know it’s a short distance, I was free-standing and making several shots (PW set at 6) in the SAME HOLE! It chronied at 800 FPS using a 11-12 grain pellet from Pyr Air.

I have two RWS springers (.177) and I definitely like the PCP much more. I like the fact that there isn’t much recoil and now that I’m in a .22 caliber, I can take down a crow at 30 yards without worrying that it may not be a kill shot.

At any rate, I’m not going to change anything in regards to making more power but I will be adding items such as the Wok’s billet trigger guard, Selphs bolt handle and add a laser.

Anywhoot, I also picked up a JDS CO2 tank so I can shoot more rounds without having to refill. If you have a SCUBA tank I would think you wouldn’t need a spare air tank.

However, I’d also like to hear what experienced members have encountered by switching between two A/F tanks.

O.K. So I’ll keep it stock for as long as I can take it! Try to get a feel for the gun and what she’s capable of stock. Any word on getting a spare air tank. From what I’ve been reading you can end up with different velocities using two different tanks, swapping them out when one gets low. Is it worth it????

Thanks

I wouldn’t change a thing until you get a chrony. Also write down your top hat measurement using feeler gauges so you know what it left the factory set at. ENJOY.

Mine shoots a 15.9g pellet 900fps at a pw setting of 5 8/16. You may have maxed out on velocity and would only be wasting air to crank it up further (and of course, being louder). Sight it in and then POI test for whether PW changes cause the pellet to move higher on the target.

The Talon SS doesn’t get loud….The only way it would get loud is if you could make it shoot over 1100fps…They are amazing rifles…It doesn’t seem like it has any power because it is so quiet but like you said, when you hit something with it you realize there is a whole lot of ummph behind that pellet….First time I shot into my pellet trap I was amazed…The pellet became a paper thin splat with dust and tiny bits. It hit so hard the shrapnel came back through the back side of the paper target….Wait until you get your Condor with the high flow valve and 24″ barrel….You will flip….

I found My tss .22 to be quiet in all settings!

loud, I guess try taking off the front cap and take a few shots

So I looked out my front door and UPS came and didn’t ring my door bell.
Anyway, got my damn scuba adapter for my tank! went and filled it up and fired my first shot in the back yard. Now the first shot was only on pw setting 4 and was really quite quiet. Then I moved the power setting up to about 6 or 7 and shot a 6×6 post in my yard from about 60ft away- holy crap! This thing is powerful! I put a crowmag pellet in there and I have to say I’m impressed dudes! It went about 1/2in into that sucker! And it still wasn’t even really that loud. I stopped after that cuz it’s dark and I’m just wasting pellets till I get her sighted in. The trigger was quite nice too, not to shabby at all. Man- I can’t wait for Saturday morning! When does this thing really get loud? At PW 8 or so? I’m so stoked. The cool thing is I’ve got a shroud coming too so I should be able to crank up the power a little more in my back yard.

I put the 18″ barrel on with a Frame Extender. The FE sticks out 3″ past the end of the frame, so is still very compact and silences better than the stock TSS (of course you wouldn’t know with the missing end cap…..).

The 18″ barrel gives you a 100 or so fps over the 12″ and still offers a compact gun, even with the FE. I think it is the hot setup. The main fiddling that doesn’t cost anything (except time) is the tophat and the power wheel. I ended up liking the consistency the factory top hat setting (snugged up to the bolt so there is no play when the cocking handle is pushed right or left). Then I back off on the PW until the shots start getting inconsistent and then move back a little for consistent. Others swear by a much shorter top hat setting. A recent posting talks about different PW settings based on different fill pressures – a myriad of things to test.

You can do this type testing roughly without a chrony, but to really know how things are changing, the Crony is a must.

quote 271867:

my advise leave it alone for now then see what you want out of it later on. if you want to mod it you can try Don G he does some good work and it does not empty out your piggy bank. but for now just enjoy it and see what things you would like to improve on it later on

I agree with 271867…Until you have really run this thing through it’s paces you won’t know what you have…..Shoot it until you get tired of shooting then begin to think about what tinkering…Go through every inch of this forum with a fine toothed comb and read read read…..It will save you time, money and heartache…
Most important …have fun….
