Total Volume vs Volume in front of the barrel
I am trying to design a shroud and was wondering is it just volume that makes things quieter or volume in front of the barrel? For example would a mod that has 6″ past the barrel going to be quieter than one that has say 4″ past the barrel but also uses 2″ of the frame to create the same amount volume?

No. Volume is volume. Where it exists is not important, technically. However, there are other effects that interact which do, in practical terms, have an effect when you move the same volume around. These have to do with resonant frequencies, or standing waves. Remember, you are after WAVE ATTENUTATION. Keep the goal in mind. Technically, ANY volume behind the barrel crown is useless. However, sound doesn’t mind turning corners at all or reflecting. Air movement can also be redirected, or channeled, but not as easily as sound. Understanding the difference is critical.
Because sound doesn’t mind changing directions, it is possible to redirect it into the dead air space behind the barrel crown, thus using a space which heretofore was useless. In practical terms, more volume is better. So is increasing the sound absorbing methods used inside your shroud. Most designs are a blend of both.
I see nothing wrong with displaying dimensions on a copyrighted item.
I do see wrong with assuming that a powderburner baffle design will work equally as well with an airgun.
Most of you will note that I’ve never offered to make a shroud. This is because, in my humble opinion, they are illegal in states that do not allow suppressors (Hawaii being one of them) and will clearly be a prosecutable case if you are caught with one. I am working on a prototype now and making the tooling that will allow a safe, LEGAL method of using the Condors and Talons with moderators. I will post pictures after the prototype is built and tested. The supplies and tool stock have been ordered, and I will be able to accomodate a limited number of orders at a time.

i have had a chance to see inside of a factory built supressor and this is what i found inside…
there were 6 of these in-side the assembly with a 1.5″ long expansion chamber just infront of the muzzel…the baffels were assembled so that the holes did not line up and this supressor was for a .22-250 … no varriance in shape or length of the baffels just orientation of the mouse holes….the flat side faced the muzzel (sorry i cant share dimensions since i dont want to be taken to court for pattent infringment)

Generally, I have found that you want to get as much volume infront of the barrel as you can, this helps with high powered guns because the increased air blast out of the muzzle forces its way out easier.
Also, 2-3 chambers of diffrent size for harmonics etc.
