Q:

Upgraded my rangefinder!

I used to have a Nikon 3i rangefinder, but it was not very good in darker conditions. It would give me really wierd readings or just not work at all. Also the numbers were hard to see when it got dark. So I sold it and bought a Leica Rangemaster 1600-r instead, and man! You get what you pay for! This rangefinder works much better in darkness and has illuminated numbers. It also has a real sweet piece of glass. Even the case it comes in is much more lush than the Nikon.

The only bad thing is that instead of showing the calculated shooting value, it shows the true value first and then a second value after Wich is the calculated value with the angle worked into it. So you have to wait for the second value to appear. Kind of annoying because on the Nikon it just showed the calculated value and nothing else (when in that mode)

So far, no regrets. The Rangefinder is a very important tool.

Awesome man! Glad I could be of some help!

I’ve got a Sig Kilo2000. It can be had in the States for under $400 all day long and it’s been reviewed and shown to hold its own against the Leica in the OP. The Leica being the better unit by a bit.

Cricket after you posted those low light photos through the Leica 1600-R I new that was the rangefinder I wanted for my early morning walks.

Found a used but in mint condition Leica 1600-B on ebay. Man you and hsnmz were spot on, the Leica is state of the art. Accuracy is AMAZING. Markers I had measured at 100 and 150 yards were dead on. Thanks for the recommendation.

Leica… nice!

I’ve got Vortex Ranger 1000, works fine so far.

Thanks for the info hsnmz. Seeing Crickets photos in low light conditions makes the Leica 7×24 1600r a no brainer if one can afford it.

Online I found a Leica 7×24 1600r for $550 shipped. The other rangefinder Im looking at is the LEUPOLD RX-1200i $300 shipped.

Wow it works in low, low, low lighting conditions. That is impressive. The other one I found with good reviews in low light is the Leupold rx-1200.

Thanks for posting those photos Cricket. Hard to believe it works so well in the dark. How is the digital read out in sunny conditions?

Laser range finder uses laser to measure the distance so day or night doesn’t matter. Leica advantage is that it displays the reading in red illuminated digits which are visible in any lighting condition. Range finders that display reading in balck color, their rading is not visible at night.

What kind of birds are those? From Iraq, I assume?

Those are pheasants…Iraqi Pheasant… hahaha. Yes.. we have pheasants like i showed..quails…and partridges also.. so many birds…

We call this bird black partridge.

So far no issues seeing the numbers, but it hasn’t exactly been summer over here. I could take some pics tomorrow if the sun is out for you

I’m very happy with it, would buy again. Got it for €500 off ebay from germany brand new. It costs a lot more from Swedish dealers. Here’s a few pics I just took, it is nighttime but the streetlight might ruin the test, I can take pics in even darker areas for you, as you can see it is snowing as well

I have Nikon Aculon and really need to upgrade. It stinks in low light conditions. Cricket are you happy with your Leica 7×24 1600r and would you buy it again or another model?

What should I expect to pay for a Leica 7×24 1600r?

They do look like the quail we have here, but more brightly coloured.

Thanks!

Sounds cool, but I have no experience in it. I’m pretty sure Leica has ranging binoculars too but the price might just be unspeakable lol

I’m thinking of an upgrade myself. What about binoculars with rangefinding built in, any suggestions?
