Q:

Using PVC for a shroud

Instead of metal, could I use PVC? How would I keep the washers still in there?

Keep going. You want .001″ or less. And turn a bar between the chuck and tailstock. Take measurement of the bar the entire length and see what you come up with. You want that bar .000″ also.

Yeah, it is better after a little work. Now it is at .004″

.01?

That is not even usable for accurate work.

Bikini,

Even if your chuck is off center – its still spinning the workpeice around a common axis so as long as you dont remove the workpeice all the cuts you make will be concentric with each other.

Have to plan your cuts carefully to limit rechucking and then you should be all set, at least until your ready to check your chuck and start using a dial indicator.

How do you fix a chuck that is off center? Mine was off by .01″ when I last checked it with a dial indicator.

Must. Not. Giggle.

Nope, couldn’t stop myself.

😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

Hopefully I’ll still be able to laugh when my shroud arrives.

😆

Don’t blame it on me, blame in on my chuck for being innacurate. I also think i dove headfirst into something I couldn’t do accurately at the time. They are getting a lot better now. I have got it down to .002″ at the end. 😆 😆 I have about 20 pounds of end caps laying around the garage, LOL!

Exactly. That is what WOK and I have been saying all along; practice makes perfect. I’m glad to hear that you are getting more accurate with each piece, and my post was just light-hearted fun as I know what you are trying to do and that you are working hard going through it. Hopefully everything will line up on mine, but if it doesn’t then I shall probably have to get another one.

I have some 1″ OD aluminum tubing with an endcap that you could have.

Or you could ask bikincrazy if he’d be willing to make you a shroud. He did some great work for me and the price is comparable to the frame extender (depends on what you want). But he will do exactly what you desire.

Pat

You might want to take a look here as a alternative

yeeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I’ll wait.
