Q:

Vented Shroud

I have noticed that my AA S410 shroud has 3 5/32″ holes at 9, 12, and 3 O’Clock. I have heard that the Edgun has many (9-12) tiny holes drilled at the rear of its shroud. Is this effective in lessening the report? I ask as I am thinking to drill holes in the rear of my .25 Marauder’s shroud in an effort to quiet this beast. While Crosman has done a good job in quieting this gun, I wonder if some more holes drilled in the right place would improve its performance. If so, how many and of what diameter?

Thanks in advance for the input. 😀

So you are saying that it is not safe for the valve right? The .25cal is not
shooting accurate with lower power?…. So I will order extra valve when I am
going to buy .25cal. No problem…. Please keep us informed about your
findings on the .25cal and thanks again Ed…..

I used different those with good BC are not accurate 🙁 I do not like Baracuda, new JSB are perfect for the accuracy but too light for the energy. I need a pellet with good BC and weight about 35-40 grains to speed it up to 300 m/sec 🙂 As for the .25 for States, if Tony orders — will send, but it will happen only in June. But I worry you at once Matador was designed for .22 and .25 is on the edge of its limit 🙂 I mean it is absolutely safe for the user but if ordinary .22 Matador can shoot up to 30-50 thousand shots without a problem in .25 it can be about 5-10 thousand and then you need to replace the valve.

gets one?

The problem with .25 caliber there are not good pellets for it like JSB for .22 I use ENJIN but the quality of them is very pour and the BC is out of any crititcs. I put a target on the veener at 100 meters and we shot from .22 and .25, the thinkness of the veneer was about 6 mm. My .22 just drilled it out 🙂 with 40 J energy and my friends .25 with 90 J energy had all the pellets under the veneer they failed to penetrate it 🙁

If you ship .25 caliber Edguns, we will buy them. The .25 cal pellets are getting very popular here and there are several to choose from.

(Pyramydair.com) Beeman has six choices in .25, H&N has seven, and JSB now has two offered. The JSB is getting very good reports in 24.5 grain for a general purpose pellet.

It can be arranged for some to be sent to you if necessary. Isn’t that right Mamcrackin???

That’s right Hoot…..

Beeman Kodiak Extra Heavy and Extra Heavy Match, both in 30.7 gr. are also getting excellent reviews by the shooters. And that is with a non-Edgun rifle!

That is not understandable… These have been good .25cal for many

You are making me run out of Rubles Ed….. Enough already……
35.49grains @ 951FPS = 71FPE

And that is not the limit 🙂

In fact, I recently shoot 8 new Matadors in .25 caliber with new shrouds on them. In fact they are at the same sound level as .22 standard Matador, but the speed of 2.3 gram pellets is about 290 m/sec. You can see the energy is twice as more as at .22.

Thank you for the advice. My .25 Marauder just puts out too much air, (the way that I have it adjusted). I am thinking that the “lots of little holes” is where I will start. I read about the melamine foam on the Marauder forum, but I am reluctant to sacrifice the volume…but then again a 4.2db reduction is worth experimenting with.

The Marauder has 6″ of shroud past its muzzle. This design is very good for the .177 and .22 versions…it even works well for the .25, but I want it better. I think that it can be better. If I really screw it up, I’ll but a new shroud when they become available. I’ll post my results.

Fishin’ Rod, Hoot, and Ed, Thank You so very much for sharing your experience.

Depends on what kind of shroud you have integrated (where the end of the barrel is in the middle of the tube) or direct, where the end of the barrel is at the end of the tube.

When we have it in the middle, like at EDgun Matador, we have such a effect, the air hit the first baffle and goes back to the shroud at the same time as it goes to the outlet of the shroud. Our task is to get as much air to the back part of the shroud as possible. But if it is close the pressure goes up and no more air can go back so it goes forward and makes the sound. To avoid it we need to make the pressure in the back part as less as possible to get more air from the baffle. There are two ways to do it, either to increase the volume of the back part or let the air go out there. As the first thing is quite difficult to achieve we need to make the way for air out — little wholes. Why little? If we have 12 little wholes the same square as one big one we will have the same efficiency but with less sound.

My S400 had them too and they were for air pressure relief so not all the high pressure air had to exit the muzzle.

One problem is the air back there can bother some shooters by hitting their hand or face. Some say they can feel it. I never did.

If you just have to experiment, I’d start small and few, like the S410, shoot for awhile, and see what happens. You can always add more. That being said, with a depinger installed in my .22 Mrod, I can only hear the hammer slap on the valve. Muzzle report is zero.

Another effort worth trying would be to put Mr. Clean Magic Eraser foam inside the baffles. There are some posts over on the YF, under the Crossman/Benjamin that describe in detail how to do this. The results were reported as very satisfactory.

Here’s the link for the Melamine Foam:
http://www.marauderairrifle.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=305&hilit=mr+clean

I’d try that before I’d drill the shroud.

Hoot

I have expermented with this when I was making shrouds. I thought it made them a little louder. It could also be that I have a different design inside my shrouds.
