Q:

Vulcan Tuning 22 cal

Well, I finally got a chrony and performed a shot string. It seems my regulator is set around 160 bar. Would like to have the regulator set closer to what it should be. From comments here it seems the 22 should be about 120 bar. The shot string also has a downward slope. Currently shooting 18.13gr JSBs at around 930. About 890 would be good for me. Then if I switch to the 16 gr, they should be closer to 930. I’ve got a few thousand 18r to go through first. I have over 1000 shots through the vulcan so I think it is time for a tune.

Who are the vulcan tuners? I’ve read about Ernest and pm’d him but haven’t gotten a response. I certainly don’t want to ship off a gun before the holidays but would like to ship it early January.

Here’s the shot string:

Well, 250 bar to 140 (if that is correct) for 66 shots is 110/66 = 1.67 bar per shot. Is that good?

When I find a gauge that is easier to read, I’ll re-do the string.

Will fine tuning the HST tighten the spread (and SD)? I’m not sure if I should increase or decrease tension. More tension should also increase fps to a point until air is really wasted. Or since the string is flat, just leave it alone?

Not sure how to get valid efficiency because the gauge is hard to get a good # on. Hoping to get a different gauge like the wiki. Then I’ll do this again. I assume fine adjustments on the hst will tighten the spread and thus the SD.

But assuming 250 down to 140 (if that was right) would be 110 bar. 110/66 shots is 1.67 bar per shot. Is that good?

I do not know If it is only my feeling but is there good efficiency? At firs look it seems it takes lot of air…

Ok, finally got to work on the HST adjustment. The vulcan is now shooting 888 fps average of 66 shots. Starting at 250 Bar per Tiger Shark gauge.

Looking at the graph, it appears to be coming off the reg after shot 66 but the vulcan gauge appeared to read about 140 – higher than my set point using a regulator tester. Not sure what’s going on. Probably a combination of the small gauge and my eyesight. But the graph looks pretty flat to me and is the desired setting (on the knee as it is described in other threads).

Anyone have the model # of the Wiki replacement gauge in the other thread? And a source?

Thanks Ben, I am going to wait and see how it performs out of the box but may have to turn it down. It is going to interesting.

Has anyone done a video on setting the reg. I saw sniper’s video where he took it out but not adjusting it.

With a tester:

Without a tester – NOTE – with the minute adjustment necessary, this will be a LONG process.. :

Dunk, doesn’t Ernest have a Utube video on the Vulcan reg?

Has anyone done a video on setting the reg. I saw sniper’s video where he took it out but not adjusting it.

Benj, sounds like it’s coming along nicely…

Well, I was well over 2500 pellets so I assume the reg had settled. Got a reg tester this past week and was able to check it out today. While I had performed a few shot strings and based on the curve thought the reg had been set to about 160, the tester today showed 150.

It does take minute adjustments to set the reg. 10 attempts and it is now set at 126 bar. Didn’t get to do any chrony work – maybe next weekend – to set the HST.

Really want to thank Ernest for his informative videos. I wouldn’t have attempted this without them.

Mods to date:
o-ring on hammer spring
1mm vent holes on shroud (fore and aft)
LDC
Set reg to 126 bar
o-ring mod on degasser screw

I had 2450 rounds through my .22V when it was determined that the reg was settled in at over 145 bar. Though it didn’t affect accuracy significantly, I didn’t like seeing an occasional 30 fps jump. So I got advice from kris and guykuo and others about the reg and settings and it took 4 or more tare downs and adjustments for me to get it to around 110 bar. It now uses about 15 bar per 11 rounds. And I fill to about 230 bar now.
800 rounds later I still have a low SD, a small spread and FPS around 868 for 106 good rounds from 250 bar fill.

Nope, I didn’t break anything, yet ❗ Other than a couple breech o-rings.
It still has a slight Czech Republic Blue Grass Twang and I’m beginning to enjoy and look forward to hearing it :3:

History: during 1st 2K rounds I had Zonk’s assistance doing shroud venting then proceeded to smooth and properly adjust the safety, lightened and adjusted trigger mechanism, polished hammer and hammer spring, flattened and radiused the hammer spring and experimented with various grommets, heat shrink etc on the hammer spring, cleaned brass powder from hammer spring and breech block areas and lightly lubed them with moly.
Oh yes, I striped one allen screw head but it’s still useabable.
I’d do it all over again if needed but would not advise anyone without a lot of experience to attempt any of this.

If you send in a basket case of loose parts you may be looking at double or triple the cost of the original needed repair. And that is fair because it takes a lot of time trying to figure out what you did and why.

I’d wait for the regulator has settled some. Use hammer spring to tune it down a bit. Check to see where velocity is after each tin. Please don’t go tearing into gun just yet. Mine settled down from average 938 to average 915 on my 25

i am not surpriced that your guns fall apart if your regs are set so high, it takes lot of hammering to open a valve when 140-160bar is behind it.

if you want speed, shoot lighter pellet!!!

Well, project for this weekend. Reset HST for 890 – 900 fps. round up all of my junk pellets and shoot another 1000 rounds. Won’t chrony them as they are 14 or less gr. Just shoot.

Then rerun the chrony string with 18 gr and see if reg changed.
