Q:

Went from CO2 to HPA today, for the first time

I have owned a .22 TSS for a few years now, but only ran it on CO2.
Performance was fine at 10 meters on paper targets, and that’s all it was good for.

Today I got the talon tank in the mail, ran out and bought a new SCUBA tank right away (dive shop 2 miles away). Finally, this little carbine is a decent all-around pellet gun. I played with it at 50 yards today, just long enough to get the scope’s elevation adjusted.

Well, I’m at a loss at what’s causing the problem on the adapter side.

Perhaps a tophat is the answer. You’ll need to crank up your power wheel to adjust for the loss of height on the TH.

Meanwhile, if it moves shoot it.

No, I am pretty sure it’s a small bell that rings when the tank is full.

I see what you mean. However, my adapter does not have that O ring.

What’s that brass thing on the other end? Please don’t tell me that’s a door knob!!!

Can’t get a good picture with my camera. With the o-ring and adapter being the same color it all looks like one piece. But I found a picture here of a different adapter with the same kind of o-ring. See how it’s on the bottom?

If you still don’t know what I mean, I can borrow a better camera when my brother gets home from work.

My adapter does not have an O ring in it, and I fill my bottle just fine.

I’m confused! Can you show us this O ring in a picture. I’m thinking we are not talking about the same thing.

Something, it ain’t right!

Update: I just checked my fill adapter and there is no O ring in it. I took the bottle off my Talon and there is no O ring that seals between the fill adapter and the threads below the valve.

We MUST be talking about two different things. I just filled my bottle and no problems. We need pictures badly…you may not need a new tophat.

Since the o-ring is on the very bottom of the fill adapter, it has to be tightened against the flat base below the threads on the valve. I tried what you suggested today Hoot, blew the o-ring out of the adapter before I reached 1000psi. I’ll just try switching the top hats on my CO2 adapter with the one on my air tank. If that works I’ll order a new top hat. I measured them and the one on the CO2 adapter is .100″ shorter than the one on my air tank.

Don’t screw the adapter all the way down.

You will be able to fill if you are a few threads up from dead stop. All you are doing is creating an air tight seal so the higher air pressure from your air source can overcome the valve in your tank and bring the tank pressure up to where you want it.

Go with a few short screws….afterwards, try messing with the adapter by not screwing it down all the way. You will be much less tense and get the same results as reducing the hight of your top hat. You really don’t need to screw the adapter down to dead stop to create an air tight seal. Bring it up a thread or two and try different numbers of rotations. When you find the right place to stop, mark the thread with a screwdriver. Or better yet, drink the screwdriver, screw some more, and then wrap some tape around where you need to stop to get a no loss fill.

It’s too simple to work, but I bet it will.

PS: If you blow a nut off, I’ll send you one of mine. I don’t get to use them much anymore! 😥

Well folks, I received the replacement fill adapter from Randy and hand tightened it on my tank. Whooosh! All the air dumped out of the tank. I thought about it all night and came to the conclusion there is only one thing left, my top hat must be too tall. Randy emailed that he had tried the adapter on a tank with a .095 TH setting so it should have worked on mine.

I measured the overall length of my Top Hat as best I could and came up with 0.557″ with dial calipers. Is that about right or is it longer than it should be? Another difference is that the pictures I see on the TT website, the bottom ring of the TH is smooth, mine is knurled.

One more thing I noticed. The TH on my CO2 adapter is not as tall as the one on my HPA tank. I am not sure how much but it is obvious.

My dealings with Randy have been similar. The guy bends over backwards to make dealing with him easy.

Glad this worked out for you.

Since I am not a master with a dremel like Hoot, I contacted Randy at R&L and told him my problem with the fill adapter. He is sending me a new one out tomorrow. Said he would test it on a few tanks before sending it out. I call that good customer service.

Damn, don’t f’ with it ❗
It ain’t right ❗
A dog only shits and pisses on you.
If you haven’t got an ex-wife to test it…
It needs replaced ❗

I might try removing some metal and asking my neighbor whose dog shits in my yard to use it the first time. Too bad the dog can’t test it.

That adapter is thick steel and you only need a few thousandths of an inch relief.

I, personally, would use a dremel with a grinding stone and take off a tiny bit where it might touch. The same thing can be done with a sharp drill, that adapter is pretty hard. A thousandth of an inch is not much to remove.

The worse thing that can happen is you will blow a nut off. The odds of blowing both nuts off are remote. You also might be killed.

Whatever you do, proceed slowly and carefully. Have your wife fill it the first time. She can be replaced. Your nuts can’t!

Or, just play it safe and have Randy send you a replacement.

The choice is entirely yours.

Hoot 😯

You are changing a pressure vessel. STOP. Best to get a replacement. You can do a lot of things. STOP. Consider the consequences of what you about to do.

So can I take a drill bit and drill out a little till it clears the top hat? Plus my measurement includes the o-ring that sticks up above the edge, that is probably another .010 to .020 less than 1.357 when it is smashed flat.
