Went from CO2 to HPA today, for the first time

I have owned a .22 TSS for a few years now, but only ran it on CO2.
Performance was fine at 10 meters on paper targets, and that’s all it was good for.

Today I got the talon tank in the mail, ran out and bought a new SCUBA tank right away (dive shop 2 miles away). Finally, this little carbine is a decent all-around pellet gun. I played with it at 50 yards today, just long enough to get the scope’s elevation adjusted.

I took a McDonalds straw and cut it flush. It measures 1.357″ with my calipers.

The top hat is about the size of a wooden pencil. Use that for your depth gauge. Mark your line using a razor blade or similar. I will do the same. My measurement is 1.495 to .1515, depending on the curve of the eraser, but clearly greater than the 1.370 top hat to tank measurement.

How can I measure the distance from the base of the adapter to the inside top that is in the middle? I don’t have a depth mike only calipers.

If I measure to the area that the OD of the top hat may contact the adpater, which is about .160 of an inch from the center, I have approximately 1.435 (hard to measure as the inside of the adapter is slanted).
I also have about 1.370 top hat to tank measurement.
If I measure down the inside edge of the adapter I have 1.275, but it looks like a 30 degree slant in there like a drill bit has.

The adapter should never touch the top hat. Pressuring the tank works on air pressure differential.

Just came in from measuring.

The distance from the base of the air tank to the top of the top hat is 1.370″

The inside depth of the adapter is 1.250″

So the adapter is pushing the top hat down .120″ and releasing the valve. Does anyone have one of these fill adapters that can measure theirs? It is an AF product purchased from R&L. But now it makes sense to me why I am getting pressure lock.

EDIT – The top inside of the adapted is tapered. Like a cone so when I measured I was going by the edge distance. Where the top hat would touch in the center of the adapter there is a little more room than what I measured.

The fill adapter that screws onto an AirForce tank is finger tightened. Once the bleed valve is opened on the pump or scuba adapter, all the air from the valve seal outward is relaesed. All this time the valve has remained sealed by the valve spring pressure, when you are not pumping or transferrring. Unless you have something pushing into the adatper thread area, I’m baffled.

I am sorry, I must not have made myself clear. I am using a fill adapter that screws onto the tank and has a male foster fitting on it. I use a SCBA cylinder to fill the tank. If I screw the fill adapter too tight, the air blows out of the tank through the foster fitting. This is without it being connected to the SCBA fill adapter.

But even if I don’t crank down on the fill adapter to where the air in the tank escapes, sometimes after I fill it I cannot get the adapter with the foster fitting to unscrew from the AF tank. So then I have to let ALL the air out through the bleeder, loosen the fill adapter with the male foster fitting just a little bit (like a half a turn) and refill it. I have lost three full tanks of air now and I would like to figure out why. I am afraid that one day I am going to blow the o-ring on the bottom of the fill adapter because I don’t have it snug enough.

I have measured the top hat clearance and it is between .074-.077″ (using dial calipers) so I don’t think that is the problem.

Something is wrong here! There should be a screw knob on the side of the attachment that fits on the scuba tank that you tighten before you fill and loosen after your fill. That releases the 3K psi pressure from the fill hose so you can pop off the QD from the rifle.

It’s the knob on the side of the tank attachment, not the big one on the back that holds the attachment to the tank.

If I tighten it real snug, I can’t get it to unscrew once the cylinder is pressurized. Then I have to let out all the air and try again with the fill adapter not as snug.

HPA is great fun 😀
