on your mini lathes?
I’m still running that 3in stock pice of shit…. just ruined the same pice twice due to that fucked up thing, and I’m all pissed off!!!! thinkin of stepping up to a 5in… and looking for everyones thoughts..

A big lathe is always a good choice
Unless you do not have room for it
Have no way to move it
I chuck up the WokDisc in it and it is 60mm / 2.36″
Thats the biggest for the inside jaws I have done

I don’t want to sound like an armchair quarterback here so I’m just going to post something I saw. I have no experience with this machine so I’m not suggesting to anyone to run out and buy it.
I was looking on Grizzly’s website and saw this… I wonder if it’s quality is any good? It looks like a really nice machine. Not too bad of a price for it either…

once you lap the gibs real good and get everything dialed in they are great little lathes, I haven’t lapped the rests yet but some day i will… short of the stock 3 in chuck I recommend them, if your just doing smaller pieces i.e under an inch and close to the chuck than the 3 incher is fine
I’ve got a 12 swing x 48 inch craftsman lathe and just got me a acra mill. How well for those tiny machines work ? I love mine no complats except needs a 3/4 horse in stead of a 1/2. And it needs a electric brake would help wonders for threading

from what I have learned and believe is that there is really only one maker of all these “mini lathes” and they are painted different colors, different stickers and then sold by different places, some come with more tooling/odds and ends, all are priced different and all need tuning out of the box. so you need to do your homework to see which package is best for your needs. there is different models out there, i.e, mine is a 7×12, I think wok’s is a 7×10(?), they make a 7×14, and an 8×12 but I’m not too sure if the 8x’s are the same machine or not.
I think if I were to do it all over again I would go for the grizzly G4000 9″ x 19″ Bench Lathe, twice the money but most defanitly a step up.

While we’re on the subject, what LATHEs are you guys using?
If your not careful part may go ker chunker into tool. Or so im told… Full tool engagement makes me nervous

with a band saw you will have to chuck your finished pice back up and face it, which doesn’t work when you just cut threads on it. parting it with the live center nice and slow with plenty of lube will give me a nice finished face, break the edge and done….
I rather not do it that way, but in till i get a better chuck that is the way it has to be done
Isnt parting with a live center kinda a no no? I like band saw for tricky part off.

Have you considerd a collet chuck ?
If i were wanting a bit of repetability on a smaller lathe, id seriousley look at one of these.
I just got a “Forkardt F200 +” (3jaw 8″) for the cnc. But still need to source a decent set of hard jaws for it before i fit it. These are a propper piece of german engineering.
