I have decided to save my pennies until I can go Gen II
I’m in the procees of building a 2nd rifle with the invaluble help of Walt, and I plan to have a day rig and a night rig……

I found the same thing. I marked where my scope was in its normal position for daytime use, and then where it would be when I put my Monocular on the back and mounted the scope at the halfway point. Its a compromise but works day or night without moving the scope again.
All in all – I couldnt have been that happy with it because I did end up selling a perfectly good Gen 3.

and here is a picture I found of that Yukon with a dayscope adapter. Its obvsiously a bit small but thats a function of the camera and someones editing not the device.
I’ve suggested the monocular to Pablo a number of times, but it does (as he says) introduce the problem of having to shift the scope back and forth for day/night use. Having said that, I find I can accomodate a cheek-position that varies by six inches or more (which is about the length of the monocular).
Jerry – With a dayscope adapter your not magnifying a Gen 1 image (magnifying the gen 1’s display). Your viewing a magnified image from the scope using the Gen 1 device. Big difference.

I think you’re making a good choice going with good optics and illumination that you can remove for daylight use.
I’ve got a basic Russian gen1 scope that is good for plinking but not for hunting. I mounted it on an RWS 54 and it works well enough that Timmy, 3 years ago as a 9 year old could consistently hit 1″ swingers at 25 yards. The picture is crap though and even strong IR illumination has rapidly diminishing returns as darkness is replaced with a washed out image.
I’ve got hundreds of hours flying with NVGs and I can tell you that the difference between gen1 and gen2 is indeed huge. I can see why those folks with only gen1 technology never decided to change their tactics to maximize goggle use, it would have been deadly!
I can’t see that magnifying a gen1 image is going to work very well. You might see what appears to be a good picture for walking in the dark but when it comes to aiming at a small kill zone at 75 yards you’d be disappointed. It can be done but all the same, waiting for a gen2 or gen2+ tube makes sense.

All of this is great if you are not wanting the bad guys seeing your location. Like in WAR!
But for hunting, it sucks big time. Poor image quality. Short range. Target blending into the grass. Not so good in really dark country side hunting. Real problems in urban settings where there is light in one spot, and dark in another.
With a simple lamping system using a quality, (And I do mean QUALITY) Scope and light,you can see the eyes of a rabbit at 200 yards.
I use a simple system on my HMR .17 up to 200 yards here at night, and the .25 AF out to 100 yards. It is nothing more than a surefire c-2 with a 255 lumen led from light hound mounted under the shroud in a 1 inch scope mount. (A fenex requires a 30 mm). Along with a good scope with good light gathering capability. The .17 has an older US made Simmons with a 40mm adjustable objective , and the .25 AF has the Zeiss Conquest with a 50 mm objective. (with the Zeiss, in moon light, you don’t really need the lamp most of the time. It is that good)
When the sun comes up, I still have a great set up. Not so with night vision. It is much more versatile. And not any higher in cost than a much more limited in use night vision system. 😀
Night vision is fantastic when going after the bad guys and remaining hidden from the enemy. It isn’t great for hunting. And Illegal in many locations for just about any type of hunting.
Invest in good optics. You won’t believe what your not seeing! 😀

My advice get a nice big bright lamping kit!
Of buy a GEN1 device and mount the lamping kit with a IR pass filter on it.
As said illumination is the key.
But be aware you need the ir light to pick up a rabbit at night. That fluffy fur of them ole rabbit is very good at absorbing ir stray light. So with nv they look like a dark patch of grass. Using ir lets you see their eyes, those light up like a shiny turd in moonshine!

Ok, so let me get this right….
Gen1 is shit.
Gen2 is better but has Russian crap in it.
Gen2 by you dutchies is ace, but cost more than gen3…which you can’t order from the states anyway….

The problem nowadays is most GEN2 stuff that is available nowadays is mostly surplus US tubes. They are a leap forward of Gen1 but won’t give you startrek performance. Al GEN2 ATN models use russian tubes. The are not bad and serve their purpase. The really good GEN2 stuf is made in this nice little country called the netherlands 😆 It’s made by DEP Photonis. But even more expenxive then Most GEN3 stuff from the us.
GEN 3 are made in Russia, Japan and of course the US.
But export restrictions apply to all Gen 3 stuff in the US. So getting it if your outside of the us is practically impossible. So for Non US people the way to go is Russian stuff or DEP tubes. The first is the more affordable route.Dipol and Dedal make some fine units!
Don’t buy stuff you haven’t tested in the environment you’re going to use it. Most NV stuff gives a good image when your in a semi dark urban place. But when your in a field with low straylight you can be dissapointed. So TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.

With a BIG IR Gen 1 can make it 75 yards.
There’s a MASSIVE gap between quality of Gen 1 and Gen 2, and a smaller gap between Gen 2 and 3.
Here is a 4x Gen 1 ATN 390
That rabbit is only at 20 yards with a decent illuminator (would be much better with a laser.. but thats kinda close range for a laser)
Its hard for me to give a like and like comparison because I’ve never owned any Gen 2 or 3 Riflescopes, just monoculars but here is Gen 3 with zero mag of same area without any illumination. Newer Gen 2 will look similar because thats a low end Gen 3.
I think most people would agree that its cheaper and you get better results with Gen 1 if you just use a Gen 1 monocular with a Day Scope Adapter and a laser IR. Get to use the same gun during the day, get more magnification etc.
