What do you use to attract squirrels?
Do you use regular bird seed or what? Preferably not too costly. T.I.A.

I’ve heard of controlling squirrels using live traps on customer’s property, and I know they use some form of bait to lure them into the trap.
One way they dispatch the caught squirrel is to plunge the whole cage into a trash can full of water, that seems cruel but one thing is you never release a squirrel that has been caught in a cage, or you will never be able to trap it in a cage again.
I think the ground squirrel is considered a pest, but Doug has a provided some valuable information.
3 weeks ago I had to replace a whole $37 piece of siding (+ $10 in paint), because a squirrel chewed his way in. I love squirrels, and I understand they got to live somewhere.
Since It wanted to live in my house I guess I should make it lunch. A whole sandwich seemed like it was too much, but a small cracker seemed just right. 😉
No, it does not prohibit pest shooting, Ground Squirrels and (feral) pigeons are pests. Like rats and mice, baiting is just fine, they are not covered under Game Animal laws. Very important difference.
Crows are another matter. They are not only game animals but being Migratory are under Federal Protection. This means, generally, they have to be in season, under license and hunted with shotgun only. If the farmer or owner has a proper depredation permit, this can change this rule as the permit can modify the methods allowed (just as it can permit airguns in city limits for instance). However, informal pest shooting and sport hunting of Crows with airguns is a violation of Federal regulations, even in season with a license. This ‘detail’ was overlooked when the regulations were rewritten to allow airgun hunting in California, or so Robert Hamilton (the guy that go the law changed) once said. FWIW, it applies to dove hunting as well (since they too are Migratory Game Birds). Shotgun only. Quail and other resident game are OK with airguns.

It’s one thing to bait pest animals, but squirrels and rabbits are game animals. This means baiting is generally illegal.
And the definition of baiting is generally much broader than folks think. Here in California it reads:
“Except as otherwise provided in these regulations or in the Fish and Game Code, resident game birds and mammals may not be taken within 400 yards of any baited area.
(a) Definition of Baited Area. As used in this regulation, “baited area” shall mean any area where shelled, shucked or unshucked corn, wheat or other grains, salt, or other feed whatsoever capable of luring, attracting, or enticing such birds or mammals is directly or indirectly placed, exposed, deposited, distributed, or scattered, and such area shall remain a baited area for ten days following complete removal of all such corn, wheat or other grains, salt, or other feed. ”
Please note, the bait doesn’t have to be put out for squirrels (a bird feeder counts), nor do you have to put it out (the law doesn’t depend on who put it out), nor does it have to be in your yard (400 yards or less in the last ten days). A bird feeder in the neighborhood counts as baiting.
Even if it was legal to hunt in your back yard (generally not, even with a license, in season, you still need permission of the neighbors within 150 yards).
Just so folks understand what the hunting laws say. I’m sure the good readers of this forum are intersted only in nature watching, of course, but we wouldn’t want to be misunderstood…….

Doug does this apply to ground squirrels too? I believe it’s perfectly ok to shoot squirrels and other “vermin” at dairies. They have a huge feed pile, I believe it’s ok to shoot pigeons and crows too when they become pests. Give me your two cents.

put it on a cracker, press it into the center of a tree (backstop) mash it enough to get the peanut butter to get mushed deep into the bark. then push harder to break the cracker into 1/2 ” chunks. This will keep a smart squirrel from prying off the whole cracker and running off to eat it.
Just got the Driveway Patrol infrared detector. I had to put it in can to narrow the detection field. They do work!

Ok, done! Put four globs of P.B. on four Ritz crackers and mushed them pretty good into the tree trunk. We’ll see what happens next…..

in ny red squirells are considered non game as well as pigieons and rats and sparrows and woodchucks and porqupines. all can be baited
i personally make this mix
take a few pounds of bacon cook it up
eat the bacon save the grease add a couple cups of peanut butter (chunky kind) and some dried corn and sunflower seeds mix all together make it into bricks wwhen it hardens and cools put out basicall a homemade suet but attracts all of the above i listed well exept porqupines.
thats my mix and have shot many NON game animals
