What do you use to attract squirrels?
Do you use regular bird seed or what? Preferably not too costly. T.I.A.

Hey Cyg., I was thinking along the lines of something like CFX’s “coffin” feeder made out of 2x4s to stop a springer pellet.

Peanut butter!
put it on a cracker, press it into the center of a tree (backstop) mash it enough to get the peanut butter to get mushed deep into the bark. then push harder to break the cracker into 1/2 ” chunks. This will keep a smart squirrel from prying off the whole cracker and running off to eat it.
Just got the Driveway Patrol infrared detector. I had to put it in can to narrow the detection field. They do work!

sunflowerseeds ! little more expensive than critter mix, but the squirrels i have run into seem to disregard the extra stuff thats in the crittermix and go straight for the sunflowerseeds…costco’s birdseed mix has worked great for me thats what i used 95% of the time for my squirrel vids, it has alot of sunflowerseeds in it…somthing like 70%….
one thing is what they like….you need to present it too them as well, and supply a feeding place that would seem safe to them….so in the beginning put out a “trail” that leads to your feeding station
big logs can build great backstop and give the squirrels a safe zone where they feel hidden and safe.
corners in the yard is great, along closed fence (doesnt work with open fences like wire fences) under bushes etc, they will feel safe there, break off branches in your way for the shot, make sure of your backstop, especially if your in a urban setting.
with sunflowerseeds get the rythm of the squirrel….they will sit and bow down to pick up a seed, and then spend 5-10secs eating them….they end up with the head in the same posistion most of the time….so you can line up the shot so when it goes to pick up its last seed yo can shoot it.
wife bought some crappy PB, and i ended up putting it out to the squirrels, and they actually went for the sunflower seed pile fist. driveway detector is a great thing, i used video cameras, to keep an eye on the feeder, not as good as it requires you to keep an eye on the monitor, but it also lets you see if its just a bird or a something else….btw they did eat the PB too
i thought i was gonna miss out on squirrels cause of the layout of the yard, but there seem to be a steady stream of squirrels comming by, the problem for me is the noise, and possible runner
right now i have 3-4 squirrels visiting my yard, i have been giving them a free pass for xmas, with plenty of feed, so they are quite fat now !
time of year have a bit to do with what they will eat and feel attracted to…acorn, nuts seems to attract to the point that they will ignore the seeds, but dont worry theres allways a stupid one looking for a easy meal.
Peanut butter. Put a blob where you want them to stop for a few minutes…on a brick, on a board, on a piece of cardboard that gets nailed to a tree. This technique has worked well for me aiding in the process of eliminating rats and ground squirrels. Combine this with a Harbor Freight infra red “driveway sensor” and it becomes quite convienent.

I just bought a bag of that “critter mix”,,,, it works great. I’ve used it in the past and it drew in squirrels and rabbits to my backyard. The stuff didn’t last long but it sure worked….

Whole corn or sunflower seeds.
My grocery store sells bags of CritterMix . Like bird seed with corn and peanuts. Buy rat traps, they love it too!
