Q:

What’s needed to fix this???

Yesterday , my .177 TSS, was shooting 10.2 pellets @ 830fps. life was good 😀 😀 This morning I go out to plink….gun sounds terribly weak..I bring it in and shoot some chrony shots..under 400fps !!!!
YES, it was full of air filled to 2800, I had not done anything to gun.I did however tighten TH screws and loc-tite them…but thst was ALL I did, nothing else…..if II turn PW up, naturally power goes up, but not at a cery rapid rate….Normally PW was set at 4.0 for the 830 fps with 10.2 pellets…So, any ideas? do I need to tear down and see if I’ve got broken parts and/or dirty components??? Never had a gun “break” like this while it was just sitting in the house..like I said yesterday it was fine. Thanks for any help…I’m thinking it’s gotten debris inside somewhere that is causing something to drag(hammer??) BTW, I checked barrel and cleaned it, nothing came out….patch was really clean…so I need HELP!!
BTW–the first few shots this morning were OK,,,then it started getting weaker and weaker…

I will take a shot…

Mine was doing the same thing. I cleaned and cleaned but it would shoot a few shots ok then low power.

Upon closer inspection (looking at the hammer guides). I discovered I had tightened the trigger guard screw too much. The screw was sticking through the inside of the frame a bit and causing drag on the hammer (it was hitting the hammer guides). I added an extra washer so the screw would not go as deep into the frame and all is good. It took me forever to figure it out. I must have cleaned the thing ten times in a row!

Pull the hammer and look close at the hammer guides and see if there are any nicks or signs of it dragging across the screw. Or… loosen that screw and see what she does on the chrono. Be careful, not too loose!

That will also cause the gun not to cock as well

Could be your valve seal is not holding the stem tight enough. Its popping out a bit. Then it absorbs some of the hammer strike as it re seats.

OK…gun did the same thing this afternoon (see above post)..I removed the bottle , checked gap. it was correct, checked the 2 screws on TH..they were both tight ( I lock-tited them 2 weeks ago) I got a FIRM grasp on the TH and turned it along with the stem , about 3/8 to 1/2 turn. Gun went right back to the 830-840 psi that it’s been shooting at 😀 😀 😀 Has anuone had this happen?? I don’t remember reading about it in the 5 pages (read HERE before you ask questions) section…Easy enough to correct, now that I know what the deal is…but it does have me wondering—what say ye ” disciples of the dark side?? “

I’ve had several temporary occurrences of low velocities, just dumb mistakes trying to shoot rapidly. Examples., breech not fully against the top hat collar, pellet not seated or backwards. But my worse was when I pumped the tank up at the range and didn’t install it perfectly straight. Luckily I hadn’t stripped the threads. After several slow shots I headed home.where I discovered my mistake. Reinstalled properly all was well.

PS. My stock Condor only had 1 1/4 turn to hold the tank in the collar. I got a fully threaded collar from Dave424 and don’t worry about it coming loose anymore.

I think WOK has it dialed.

Hammer chatter is almost always the cause of very low power shots in my experience.

Doesn’t take much of anything to start it and taking it apart and reassembling the dirt/hair/whatever doesnt always show up.

Well, like I said, I did clean everything really good, but there was very little dirt/debris of any kind …BUT–the gun is back to working as it should, so that must have been the problem..I must say, the TSS is one of the EASIEST airguns to breakdown I’ve ever owned…S-I-M-P-L-E 😀 😀 😀 Again thanks for all the help guys!!

Lead dust can foul the hammer movement and cause it to chatter as it moves and can really kill velocity.

Checked the valve stem..no damage, so tore gun completely down and had a lookee-see..NOTHING wrong that I could see…did a good clening of everything and put ‘er back together, hoping for the best..used chrony and found it back to putting out the 10.2 pellets at ~830fps, just like it was before the “incident”..What really PO’s me is I have NO IDEA of what was wrong…. 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 GuessI’ll just shoot and enjoy it and see what happens!!! Thanks for all the help guys,,,,this board is the best thing thta can happen to an AF owner 😀 😀

i ended up stopping using the set screws all together on both my condor and SS….i just use locktite …the 10 second stuff that doesnt come undone…..when adjustment is needed i carefully hat the tophat over a candle, with an allenkey in the setscrew hole….when it gets hot enough it will rotate….remove heat and it hardens again, this way nothing will ever shift…well the glue will wear out from heating and stuff….but its good for several adjustments as long as you dont overheat….overheating is bad mmmkay….only heat enough for the glue to unset.

The TSS has a thicker valve stem compared to a Condor… I’m not saying it’s fine… follow the advice above. Then…

Check your breech, when cocked, sits flush against the TH without any play. I had your exact symptoms when the breech wasn’t resting on the TH. The hammer strike was slowed down by the breech->TH gap.

Given you only loctited it – there’s a possibility the TH rotated slightly.

if you dented stem or made it oval by tightening the screws….you can with luck force a drillbit of the right OD into the stem and see if you can make it round again, of course use the end of the dillbit thats not used for drilling….

next time when tightening the screws…put the drillbit in there again and tighten down…this will keep stem from getting out of shape

my bes guess wil be that you made the stem oval, and it is now scratching the stem collar

have fun

Make sure your hammer and all the dust crap is not slowing down your hammer

Over Tightening the TH screws can dent the stem. Take off the tank and look in the stem.

Good information, thanks.
