Q:

Why adjust the top hat, should it strike the valve body ?

Shouldn’t the top hat be set where it does not impact the valve body, therefore the only opposing forces are the valve spring and the tank pressure ? Or does the top hat have to strike the valve body else there is enough hammer force for a tank dump, even at high tank pressure ?

The top hat will start smacking the valve body around .025 to .030 area, found this slowing down 14 grain pellets when first bought the condor, did not have any heavy pellets at that time, so i had to figure out how to slow down the condor or use it for a fence post. 😆

I was getting inconsistencies in my groups, PW at 2 to 3, psi 1900 or so.

the more the PW was turned up the worse it got, and i was shooting at my garage bench , and i had a full set of automotive AC oring replacement variety pack sitting on the bench and though HUH, wonder if that will work!

My TH is set at .050″ and have noooo accuracy issues and it does not hit the valve body. I have a 85 gram hammer and the p/w set to 1/13. I get 30 (880-910-880 fps) 45fpe shots using 550psi so it has a big effect on fps and air usage. Why I think 07 summed it up pretty good.

hay jerry clay works good. put a tiny peace and shoot it a few time if it smashes it off its hitting if not u will see the gap u have left

So…, if you wanted higher power, you’d have to set the top hat further out and only go to a heavier hammer if you can’t get full throw on the stem. I think…

I used a cigarette paper to see. Yes it did/does. TH set at around .09 and stock main spring with 65gram hammer

Valve clearance isn’t dependent on air pressure and return springs vs. hammer weight and hammer spring. When checking the valve clearance, the clearance will be what it is, just keep turning the cam shaft. With a bunch of springs and air springs in the system, the clearance will change based on anything that slows the hammer or valve etc.

It’s not the same application.

Thats true but that what we use to do for our race cars to get it the ball park so we could see our valve clearance to the piston when ve werr making costom ground cams

The problem with clay or any other putty is that it will change how the valve works. You need ink that has almost no depth to know if you’re hitting under normal operations.

Personaly I make my one peaces valve and keep it set at .100 thats the gap o like I dont like have play in between sure it migjt make a diffrence a tiny bit but when your hunting u want it sealed all the time so u know theres now leak or play. My gun a gap means crapy shot. But guns will verry .

Are you guys not seating your bolt all the way? When you put the bolt on the top hat you should keep closing until there is a click.

The bolt sits on the top of the top hat and there never is a space when closed.

It there is a space between the top hat and the bolt you are doing it wrong.

Adjusting the top hat changes the distance the hammer hits the valve stem. Alter that distance and you can fine tune the velocity and efficiency of the valve.

I’m going to take a stab at this.

The breech should pulled all the way back and rotated right or left, to lock the breech in place. I turned the tophat down to not waste air. (toward the air bottle/blue locktite required afterwards/to keep tophat from rotating) The breech oring must engage the tophat. My breech never pressed against the rim/brim of the tophat. Until fired!

Adjusting the tophat, determines the amount of time that the air valve remains open, therefore effecting the total efficiency of the gun. Determining how many shots you get from a bottle of air and how powerful the shots are.

Obviously if the valve remains open after the pellet escapes the barrel, you waste that amount of air and create unwanted noise and have a low shot count.

Ideally the valve should close before the pellet exits the barrel. This is the klinker. Adjusting the total system to get the most consistent, most powerful shots without wasting air and getting the highest shot count possible per bottle of air. Tuning for power will give you less shots of course.

Yes, you can also detune the rifle for less powerful shots and increase the shot count per bottle.
