Q:

Why do…

…people cut threads with a lathe as opposed to a tap & die? I know size is often the reason, but surely there are many sub-inch diameters where a T&D would be much easier?

How do you stop the motion Sean, does it stop automatically via a limit you set, or do you throw a lever or something?

Well said.

I dont think ive ever seen a bore of a barrel in the centre of the barrel yet.
Its only really noticable when the barrel is spining that the amount of wobble can be seen.

I cut slightley over size and use good quality full thread profile cutting tips to take it down to the propper size.

Always cut the thread through the centres.

Tap and dies are easy to use and readily available BUT if you want the threads on your barrel to be absolutely, positively parallel to the barrel’s bore then a lathe is the only way to go. Remember, we’re not threading bolts for a nut to go onto. If the threads on your barrel aren’t parallel to the bore, anything you screw onto the barrel may/will interfere with the projectiles path (clipping). Go on YOUTUBE.COM and search barrel threading if you’d like to see how it’s done on a lathe. Don’t risk ruining your barrel by threading it with a die.

You can influence the fit of the thread. Threads just like axles have tolerances. Like a hole 10H7. With a lathe and a thread micrometer you can machine inmensely tight fitting concentric threads.

You can influence the fit of the thread. Threads just like axles have tolerances. Like a hole 10H7. With a lathe and a thread micrometer you can machine inmensely tight fitting concentric threads.
