Working on the Ranger 45 stock again
JD got my interest in working on the stock again in some emails he has exchange with me and his Ranger that is arriving soon.
The stock that came wit my Ranger was a classic style walnut stock, nice wood, the style I like, but way too oversize. It reminded me of a NM 03A3 stock or a Supermatch M1A stock.
After a few months I had had enough and I carved a slight cheek piece in the stock and took off a little bulk and weight, but still had much more to go.
I have finished my USMC knife projects and that too had got my interest on reducing the weight of the Ranger stock.

I figure I will have about a week in sanding this to get it to the size I want. I hate the style of air gun stocks made today, most of that stuff looks like something Hans Solo would be carrying.
The lead fish is two of the 65 lbs of pure lead fish ingots I got in today. I paid $1.20 per pound delivered.

NASA didn’t help with the designs of the F102 Delta Dagger and the improved version, the F106 Delta Dart.
President Eisenhower started NASA in 1959, the F102 first entered service in 1956 and the substantially improved version, the F106 Delta Dart entered service in 1959. NASA had nothing to do with their devolvement. The “area rule” that led to the Coke bottle shape was discovered by Otto Frenzi, a German Nazi scientist, in 1943.
The US didn’t “capture” Otto but: we did grab the Nazi Nuremburg war crimes trial qualified Wernher Von Braun and make him a hero at NASA!
Convair tried different engines in the F102, when the P&W J57 became available, they went with it.
While I am on the Convair delta winged jets, how about the B57 Hustler?
A lot of test pilots lost their lives flying experimental jet planes. The high stabilizer offered improvement but, the “flying stabilizer”, where the whole stabilizer could rotate solved the problem.
As a kid, I glued together models of all of the WW2 and later planes. My favorite WW2 planes were the F4U Corsair and the P47. I also had a Bell X1 but, my favorite was the Republic F106 “Thud” (Thundercheif). It was designed as a low level super sonic nuclear weapon delivery plane for entering the Soviet Union’s territory. Over ½ of the production run of them were lost over North Vietnam.
The F106 was designed to come in low and fast, not drop bombs at 20,000-30,000 feet like they were ordered to do in Viet Nam. The Thuds got a few Migs in combat but, with the low wing area, they couldn’t dog fight effectively. They could go low, turn on the after burner and get away. To this day, I don’t think that there is anything that would keep up with a Thud down low.

When the first jets tried to break the sound barrier, they actually killed one pilot due to buffeting of the jets when they got close to the speed of sound.
The US and Brittian were working on how to solve the problem, the Brits eventually quit the search for supersonnic flight, but had found part of the answer before they did and that was to produce a tail with the control surfaces high on the tail, they gave their research to the US to work with.
The other cure was to produce a wing with a 6% width to thickness ratio.
Enter the F102 Dela Dart. It was produced to be one of the first interceptors to confront the potential hordes of Russian bombers attacking the US. The first prototype was unable to break the sound barrier, it had been designed with a huge motor and thin wings, but it could not go SS.
Nasa came up with the solution saying that the overall thickness of the craft had to be addressed and in making the craft wasp waist where the wings joined the fuselage they solved the problem, the next prototype had their design of the wasp waist and hit Mach 1.22.
Don’t the VLD bullets also have a wasp waist?
Now back to the Ranger stock.
Put it all together, it still has the shiny finish which I will dull down sometime in the future. It is so shiny it reeflects light and makes part of it look cloudy.
I also need to come up with a barrel band type swivel for the front sling attachment. Shortening the forearm did away with my forearm swivel stud. It did not work well anyway due to the weight of the barrel and tube making the rifle rotate backwards while carring it. A swivel needs to be much further forward and located on the air tube. Don’t know how well that will work, any ideas?
I can’t find one produced in the diameter needed, 1.12 inch so I may have to make one, perhaps out of some of the damascas steel I have left over.

I have always been a fan of Yeager. He used to strafe antelope in his younger days from a fighter, wild guy.
It was that bulge where the wing joined the fuselage the kept the 102 Delta Dart protype from going supersonnic, Nasa solved that problem for them and told them to stop lookng at the width to thickdness level of just the wings and look at the entire airplane.
I had a model of that Bell X-1 as a kid, but to me the Delta Dart was the king.
I put the first coat on the stock last night and set it by the wood stoved, thanks for the complement.
Too bad about the computer, I have another new Sony Vaio, I hate the mose pad but it is better than the last one I had, next one will be a HP tho.

Charlie, the first aircraft to break the sound barrier was the Bell X1 and it was rocket powered. Chuck Yeager was the pilot, he had got bucked of a horse the day before he was scheduled to fly the plane and he broke 3 ribs. He hid the injury as it would have disqualified him from making the flight. I am a military history buff and Chuck’s autobiography is a very good read.
The first transonic jet planes ended up being a “wasp waist” design, kind of like the old glass Coke bottle was shaped. The young members here won’t know what I am referring to.
In days gone by, Herters offered “wasp waist” bullets. When I was a kid, I could spend hours going through the Herters catalogues.
Never mind! I had a major computer crash and it has taken a few days to get back up and running.
While I was gone, I guess that I missed Cedric in his yellow tiger striped leather suit and RJ having the hots for him!

PSS: I expect my LBT moulds Fri or Sat and I can then try to learn how to use them. It might take me a couple of months; I hope to make something usable before the Hart barrel gets here in late Feb.
Well you know RJ you can avoid transonnic turbulance by increasing the length of the projectile, same thing that was done to reduce turbulance in early jets when they tried to break the sound barrier.
It involves having a bullet diameter no more than of 6% of the length of the bullet.
That means on a .257 the bullet needs to be 4.28 inches long, we can just have TJ make us up a barrel with a twist something like 1 in 2.
Or you can just chnage hobbies and take up Deliverance movie reinactments and wait beside your favorite fishing creek until Tof paddles by in a canoe with his yellow spandex, capture him and make him squeal like a pig you three toothed hillbillly. 😛

Damned good looking RC. That stock project is coming right along. And thanx for the heads up on the 257420 4 cavity. I will do some NET HUNTING tonight to see what’s out there. My biggest achilles though is that i don’t make the power you guys do but i’m always interested in trying the heavy stuff JUST TO SEE cause you never know. Between you RJ, and Doug, i would love to see you guys try out the longer and heavier 257 bullets. If not accurate, maybe we need to contact TJ about some 257 barrels with 1-10″ twist to make up for the lack of HP while using the heavy…lol! Oh LAWD, IT NEVER ENDS…..lol!

Pretty close to yours I would imagine it is Lyman 257 418.
Midway notified me that they have a 120 grain semi point back in stock, but after you cast that out of pure lead your talking maybe 125 to 130 grains, which is probably too much for the rifle to get fast enough to stablize.
Latest stock pictures after cutting 3″ of forearm off and finishing with 000 steel wool. A lot of taking it outside in the sunlight, marking flaws with a sharpie and resanding, just as soon get it as close to perfect this time around.
There was just a lot of extra wood on this stock the cheek piece was simply carved out of the extra wood.

So its a spitzer like i cast
There are a few 25 caliber molds on ebay that would work with the 257 Haley.
Three double and single cavity 257420’s too far out to get an idea of what they will sell for.
One is a 4 cavity 257420 mold, used from Lousiana and has some surface rust, it is currently at $86.00 +$10.00 shipping.
The other is a 98 grain spitzer 257418 currently at $70.00+5.oo for shipping.
The 257420 molds are widely available new, you just don’t see the 4 cavity ones, but his one is a buyer beware, has a bit of rust altho the cavities look okay.

The 418 has some alignment in peening and is a rarer mold.
