My R3 25 Long
I tracked the UPS driver down and got my R3 25 cal long at 10:00 AM today!
The fit and finish is up to the usual Edgun standards but, I think Ed was in a hurry to get the R3 25 longs out the door. He forgot to paint mine! The walnut stock looks OK, I wanted black! I will get the sandpaper and paint out when I have the time.
The gun is at least a quiet as my R2.5 25 cal long. Both of them sound louder when looking thru the scope than when held away from the ear. When my cheek is on the breech block, I hear the hammer more than the air discharge. I might not even bother with putting a de pinger in the air tube.
As delivered, my R3 shoots the JSBs at 950 fps. I will set it down to 890 and try it first. I will do some testing at other speeds but, I will be very suprised if the 25.4 grain JSBs shoot more accurately at any other speed than at 880-910 fps.

I finally got the regulator set where I want it. It is set at 894 +- 3-4 fps.
After rounding the square edge on the cocking handle plate, I noticed that I could feel the pellet’s head and skirt enter the in lead of the barrel. Using a slow and easy push, I could feel the pellet catch as it was entering the barrel. I ended up recontouring the in lead and polishing it. I also gave the crown a good polish.
In this picture, the pellet on the left is a JSB 25.4 pellet that was pushed thru the stock barrel. You can see a lead shaving on the right side of the head and the skirt has some lead that was pushed off of the back edge. The center pellet was pushed thru after the in lead recountouring and the polishing of the in lead and crown. It looks a lot better. The pellet on the right was pushed thru the BSA barrel on my R2.5. Notice how the grooves are a lot wider. BSA 25 cal barrels are actually .243”.
I got a chance to take the R3 to the range last Sunday. The wind was 7-10 mph and had wild swings in direction. 100 yard groups weren’t very good as it was hard to compensate for the wind. I was hoping that the wind would die down just before dusk.
Just as the wind was starting to behave, a guy shows up with a new M1 Grand that he just got. He sets a target up at 25 yards and sets down on the ground on the other side of the next table to my left. The wind was calm and I shot the 3 horizontal shots that touched. I was really excited and thought that I should stop right there before I screwed the great group up! I had to try for 5. As I was squeezing the trigger for the forth shot, BLAM! That thing is really loud, the muzzle blast made me jump and the gun went off. The 4th shot is the “flier” to the right. I waited till the guy shot the mag out and then shot the 5 shot. It touched the first three! Now I was really pissed at the guy for ruining my “once in a lifetime” group! I packed up and left.
The first 3 shots measure .320”, the first 3 and # 5 measure .391” and the 5 shot group measures 1.040”.

I haven’t had time to adjust my regulator, but the video seems to cover everything needed to do it.

I am at work right now, I won’t be able to post any pics till late tonight. I have a doc at home that shows the step by step on removing and adjusting the regulator. I need to turn mine down just a hair more and will take some more pics.
I don’t know why the speeds have the bell curve, the regged speeds should be the same. I think that since the reg is set so high that the hammer can’t knock the air valve fully in until the air tube pressure has went down
some.
I know that it should not make a diff as the reg’s output pressure should stay the same till tha air tube’s pressure drops below the reg’s set point.
I turned my reg’s adjuster in about 1/3 turn and it needs turned in just a little more. Right now, it starts at 890 for around 20 shots then slowly works up to 917 before going off of the reg.
It took. Me about 40 minutes to adjust my R3’s reg last Sunday. A lot of that time was spent gawking at the new parts that were changed from my R 2.5. It is not hard to set the reg.
O.k., my .25 R3 arrived yesterday. Mounted the scope and have it mostly zeroed. The velocity is not as consistent as my .22, not sure about the accuracy yet. I am seeing a bit of a bell curve on the velocity. Here are a couple of strings, starting at or about 200 bar:

The last few here I think show the drop after the pressure had dropped below ~130 bar or so.
Any ideas on why the velocity is creeping up? Is this just too high to get good consistency from the regulator? In the past, my .22 has been around 900fps and I have had better consistency. I’m guessing part of it is just the break-in of the barrel, maybe picking up a little lube from the pellets, but it seems like that should stabilize pretty quickly.
A couple other observations: cocking the .25 takes a bit more muscle, I guess because the hammer spring is stronger. Those .25 pellets hit hard! I was shooting against an oak tree part of the time, and I was making big enough holes in the bark to see easily. The .22 holes are almost impossible to see until you have hit a hole several times.
Can anyone point me to pictures that show the adjustments to the hammer spring and regulator? I’ve had my Matador apart to do a few things, but never messed with either of those.
Wish I had more airgun time, but things are pretty busy right now.

I called Benchmark and they said that their 25 cal 3 groove air rifle barrels are made out of stainless steel and are .750″ OD.
I asked if they could turn the barrel down to .609″ OD for the first 12″ from the muzzle? The guy that I talked to didn’t think they could but, he said that he would find out and call back.
My BSA barrel is .609 OD and is heavy. A SS barrel that has an OD of .750″ would weigh a ton!
I will have to contact Leupy and see if he can fit a 24″ BSA barrel to my R3. I think that they make great barrels.
While shooting both guns yesterday, I pulled some dry patches thru both guns. The BSA barrel is not really a 25, it is actually .243″. I have many 1000s of shots thru it, and I don’t believe that a lead pellet will smooth out a hard steel barrel but, pulling a patch thru the BSA was a lot easier than thru the LW. The rifling in the LW cuts rough grooves where the BSA’s grooves leave a more rounded cut. The BSA barrel made an improvement on the R2.5, I wonder if it would do the same on the R3?
I get the black gunk in my Matadors also. I keep my probe O rings well greased and I also think that the JSBs have a light lube on them also. I try to pull a couple of dry patches every 200 shots of so. The first patch is usually pretty dirty.

coming out of shroud vents.I had put some silicone oil on probe rings and
that was fouling barrel.Since bought Sil-Glyde as you suggested.
Still can`t believe your going to paint that stock.I like the grey,but would
love that walnut.Have you ever considered trying a Benchmark barrel?

Adjusting the reg would also change air consumption pr shot. Would be interesting to measure/record number of shots (and corresponding fps) from lets say 200 bar down to 100 bar in reservoir for various reg.pressures….
