Q:

Opinions wanted; big bore, "big" budget

budget: 2500-3500 (gun, scope, hard case)

gun is for:
KILL ground hogs, wood chucks, whistle pigs… whatever you want to call them
plink with AUTHORITY! (Cartman voice optional)

needs:
MUST be “backyard” quiet, must be able to put a ground hog down HARD and FAST out to 100 yards, open to cast slugs but wont “roll-my-own”
shot count: cant lie, i just couldn’t do a 3-5 shots per fill 4500psi .50 Cal but i don’t need that for ground hogs. i think a 25 shot MINIMUM isn’t asking too much
i wont be going out in the field with this so there’s room for a LDC (oh wait I’m not @ The Yellow) for a shroud/moderator

I guess all the .30(3) talk has got me chomping @ the bit to go big bore. I was able to restrain myself (thank-god) when the Rogue came out but with Daystate & FX and quite a few custom options out there and some inheritance cash…

This isn’t my first (or last) gun I have a Greg D. tuned, Mike A. stock(ed) Mrod, a stock Prod, and THIS cluster-f 3rd hand TT .25 Condor
The Condor has the power but Ive never been able to get it accurate.
hope i hit on all the “FAQ” in these threads; apples to oranges what do you want the gun to do etc etc

I have the chance to “invest” waaay more than i would normally even dream of dumping into a pellet gun so i want it to be a good’un 😛

So throw out your thoughts / experience.

Just for example
Ive been kicking around the new .30(3)’s and love the Daystate power but the FX shot count, accuracy, noise and price weigh heavy in that fight but what if: Wolverine + extended air-tube & Shroud, shooting Surefire Slugs. (Tony, Jerry think’n .30(3) yet?)
What ever came of TT’s big bore hunter?
.257 ?

thanks for the input

this thing is unreal!!

shooting off sandbags, the whole family was EXPLODING 1″ – 1.5″ diameter crab-apples @ 50 yards
me, the wife and my 7yo daughter, who thought it was too easy @ 32x (Hawke 8-32×56) …
so I dropped it down to 8x and the lil stink still hit 9 for 9 of those apples 😯

man I cant wait till I can sit down (by MYSELF) and put 100 more down that smooth twist barrel !!
there is no doubt this gun can out-shoot me and has more than enough power for my acre lot (bowling ally)

just snagged a lightly used BOSS off the yellow classified

figure all the bugs should be out by now

I’ll post up anything worth showing 😉

Groundhogs, I’ve killed a pile of them with an Air Arms s510, .22 at ranges 50 yds or less, and using the FX Royale, .25, up to 70 yds. Both guns might go a lot farther, but that’s what presented itself in the field.

One question is: do you want the thing to drop instantly? If so, you’ll get more consistent results with the slug guns. So far, the guns above have not failed me and a lot of the groundhogs dropped instantly, but behind-forearm body shots crawl a bit. Spine below the head and head shots have worked well. Both guns are crazy accurate and super quiet.

If you go with the Royale, get it with a regulator; you’ll get about 70-80 shots per fill and you can use a hand pump to fill the tank.

Conibear traps are the most time-efficient way to kill groundhogs, if you can use them. Another option, which works wonders is to take a 5 gallon bucket, put some rolls of toilet paper in it and pour some gasoline in to soak the rolls. Stuff a roll or two into the holes during late evening and put a shovel full of dirt over the hole. I’ve taken out some big colonies that way. Plus, there isn’t a pile of stink to deal with.:P

One question I have for Doug is: How much would you charge to make an accurate slug gun out of a stock .22 Condor, including a shroud? I’ve got one which is begging to be upgraded.

Joey,

I 100% agree with your assessment. Try the Boss. If i did not have my Condor, and i had the money, i would try the Boss also. But i’m glad that I did not sell my Airforce and even better, i decided to mod it in another caliber.

You are doing it right in my opinion.

But while your messin around with the decision making, will you please hurry up and buy the boss so i can see what you think…..lol!

right on. obviously you cant have your cake and eat it too.

whats been bouncing around in my head is that i would be more likely to shoot a gun well that i shoot often. therefore, given my environment/situation, I’d shoot a gun like the boss more than i would a super condor.

75 +/- FPE is plenty for my acre backyard.

like i said there isnt much point in rushing this; its no fun shooting in 20F weather only on the weekends, IF its “nice”. I’ll pick this back up in the spring.

I’d like to thank everyone.
although i wont be making the decision yet, i will come back to it MUCH better prepared.

JOEY,

Heres the honest truth and also the reason why i haven’t posted a shot count………YET!

Doug as my witness, i have shot over 12-15 shots on one 3200 psi fill without valve dump. Now, read a little deeper between the lines. My gun makes 135 FPE! So it’s no slouch in the power department. To make power, YOU HAVE TO USE LOTS of AIR. So if we look at the finer details or “READ BETWEEN THE LINES”, i get 5-6 shots point on from 3200 psi. After that, i have to start using mildots to compensate for drop (why i have mildots on all my guns). After 12+ shots, i am at my 4th mildot. And that makes sense. NO GUN TODAY CAN SHOOT ANY BETTER at that power level. So my gun is a hunter and not a plinker. That’s the other MOST IMPORTANT POINT. ITS A HUNTER. And a hunter makes ACCURACY and POWER.

Doug is machining me up a new valve and valve stem and bigger 52-53ci bottle. I’m hoping for about 950-1000 FPS but would be happy with 950-975 fps. That’s plenty of speed and it will allow me great shot count. 950-975 fps with about 10 good, consistent shots would be bitchin. I’m keeping the numbers within the design limit of the gun. If i wanted super power like the Haley guns, i could simply buy a 60+CI carbon fiber 4500 paintball bottle and attach it to my valve and VOILA. From the increased fill pressure alone, my speed therefore FPE would go way up.

A power wheel will also allow me to lower the velocity to play around.

Tofazfou

so what kind of shot count are you getting from your standard AF tank?

the picture you posted of that jack (rabbit) turned inside-out says a 1000 words about the power! 😈

colder weather and the fact that its dark by the time i get home these days has put this project into a holding pattern

Hey Joey Camel, Who’s the Boss, FX…FX…FX, you are really scared now, better flip a coin, I finally found the Daystate Wolverine, that sucker is nice nice nice, but only 10 shots and loud as a mother, I suppose someone could make you a shroud, then you have a 55 inch gun. I would get a Fx, but my Condor suits me fine, I could use a better valve though and I am working on a 14 inch 25, and need someone to make a shroud for it, a good one.

yes he does. I video tape a lot of his machining. In the link to my Talondor 257, i did a little video of him machining my barrel from beginning to end.

wholly shit 😯

been lost in the new valve thread…

you’ve got mad machining skills Doug !

EDIT:

FX who?

how does Doug machine?

like a BOSS

I can vouch for Dougs trigger on his 308. That SUMBITCH is light enough that the first shot scared the shit outta me when it went off. I WAS NOT READY….lol!

Joey,
Even my trigger has just had a lil bit of polishing and i have a trigger shoe on it and it nice. Not as nice as the MROD but its wayyy better than stock. Also Joey, i can’t say about the frame flex between the Condor and the Talon but, I WOULD ASSUME the Condor is stiffer.

Safety goes and I machine a notch in the frame so you cock it foward and rotate. You can pull the trigger but the breech doesn’t move.

The .257 would be a side cocker because of the effort to cock is a lot easier that way.

Go to my threads in the mod section and look under .308 build and .257 build.

quote Dyotat100:

I have no trigger problems. I use the 2 pieces from AF and the super sear from AoA. How light do you want it? My .308 is 7 oz. .257 is stiffer but I haven’t played with it yet, just got it setup and left it.

Trigger problems are a combination of trigger and hammer issues. I have solved them both.

Ive been out of the loop a while so forgive my ignorance.
i haven’t a clue quite honestly, the best trigger Ive felt is a Marauder so what do i know 😀

my Condor was (supposedly) tuned by Tony many many years ago
“Full Tune, Custom Shroud, Custom Hammer, Hammerslap Mod, Condor valve upgrade, O ring mod, Vented Bushing, Vent Frame” but its 3rd hand now and who knows what’s been done to it (just breeze through the link i gave in the first post)
looking @ that list, there’s nothing specific about the trigger. Im not sure if there is a lil trigger work in the “Full Tune” so i may be pulling a stock AF trigger (with “safety”)

LOL H00t
i know y’all dont give a rats ass because (really) your all just figment of my imagination created by my sub-conscience to trick my conscience mind into believing there are other people in the universe besides myself.
but thats ok, i find all you figments fun to play with 😛

Doug,
i did see the 150 groups. and although they arnt pretty, i would have to actively seek some place i could shoot >100 so it doesn’t bother me too much.

Tofazfou
damn, you are an opinionated mofo ain’t ya? LOL perfect post man! thats exactly the insight im looking for. you think the Talon frame has less flex? even up against a maddog stock reinforced Condor frame? (FUGLY as sin but if it stops the flex i think i could live with it) waiting to see what/if any changes are made for gen-2 is a really good point. much like cars, dont buy the 1st year after major changes or a new model comes out.

maw
make the decision already??!
this is a lot of money, i want to kick this around a while B4 i jump
and besides, 1/2 the fun is getting there… to “pull the trigger” now would be like going to the bar and have the hottest chick there say YES! and be spread-eagle on the bar before you even finished asking her sign. 😯
PS the Wolv. is $2695 @ AoA and yes the FX’s siren song is VERY hard to resist!

oldgoat
so you have a Boss already? (schweet)
the question is if they reduced the power due to weak link(s) or just for accuracy.

something Doug said about what he would need from my gun got me thinking… AF’s trigger. thats a fight i cant EVER see going in favor of the .257 conversion
has anyone been able to “fix” that yet?
