AGD and AGN "The Long Rangers" competition, My Taipan gets it done. 200 yards now 250.
I know many of you venture over to AGN every now and again but they are teamed up with AGD for their “The Long Rangers” competition where you have to hit a plastic golf ball supplied by Airgun Depot at 150 yards or more. I decided to poke my nose into that thread and began posting there. I couldn’t just talk the talk, I knew I had to walk the walk so I decided to finally attempt this challenge. And let me tell you, it isn’t easy.
I opted to go all out and hit the golf ball at 200 yards. I tried hard with JSB Kings 25.39 grain pellets but those crosswinds made mincemeat out of the lighter pellets out that far. What the wind is doing from where you’re taking your shot are not necessarily what’s happening near your target. So I jumped up to the 33.95gr JSB’s and the Taipan began to shine.
Anyway, here is my video of hitting the GB @ 202 yards…

I called it. Mr. Weiss came with a 309 yard shot.
I’m out of the lead. Saudi dude hit it, going by the honor system. I think it’s legit. 277 yards he says.
Don’t be plugging your products in my thread! :4:
By the way, you forgot to mention I now have your HST adjuster! :8:
Congrats Billy boy! Taipan Veteran and Ronin is an awesome combo :biggrinn:
I just ordered 3 more AGD balls, just in case. Not certain if I’ll utilize them or not though…
Very Nice!!!!
Congratulations Bill…..
You deserve that. Glad to see they are doing the right thing.
Tony
Alright, AGD is being honorable. Very nice. I wonder who’s gonna beat this and by how much…

It’s not rocket science as to what’s going on. AGD poses a challenge to garner attention to their business. It gains momentum. Then an airgun they don’t even sell comes up and trumps the others that they do sell and then all the sudden everyone wants to buy an airgun they don’t carry. This may have backfired on them so like I said, I’m sure they’ve gotta employ someone to take me out, which oughtn’t be too hard but have not done so as of yet.
That had better not be the case as I do buy products from them. I get my pellets from their sister company, Pyramid Air. Though for some reason they won’t admit they are sisters. I make purchases from airgun depot and a box shows up from Pyramid Air.
I still have a few more yards I guess I could squeeze out of it but not much. I do notice that airgun depot isn’t so quick anymore to update their leaderboard. You’ve gotta understand, which we all do here, they don’t sell Taipan but do sell FX so I think they might just be a bit reluctant to place me in the lead. Oh well. I’m sure they will. I guess.
Damn awesome shooting Bill! Yeah I’m not quite sure I can reach out that far with my scope. A fixed 12x scope actually might have enough field of view for it but don’t think I could see a golf ball at 250yds at 12x lol! These guns are awesome and ain’t going anywhere. Mines set up literally almost identical. 935fps with the kings. I really need to get me some Heavies. That could really help with shooting long range when hunting I’m sure. Really glad your proving others the Taipans can hold there own with the best
You know, Papa S., I am quite curious to go further. I’ve seen some vids on youtube with guys hitting things way out past 200 and thought it was some sort of voodoo magic or just some crazy good shooters out there and thought I’d never get there. Of course at that time I had only a Benjamin Prod. My very next airgun purchase, though I swore I’d never spend more than $500 on an “air gun”, was the Taipan. The second I started playing with it and putting lead to paper I realized immediately I had something special here. Special to me, anyway.
Then I thought, “cool, one hole hits in my backyard”, pretty spiffy, but by no means anything extraordinary. I was happy but never imagined I’d do much even at 100 like others that make it seem so easy. But one night I got bored and wanted to test my luck at 100. Shots in low-light darkness grouped under .875″. I thought it was a fluke. But as the weeks went by I’d come to realize that this is to be expected of this Taipan. I don’t know so much about other expensive airguns but figure they should all be capable of the same and wonder why there aren’t a buttload MORE loooooong distance shots on youtube as there should be.
From shooting my $2500 (at the time) Armalite AR-10T target .308 I realized I couldn’t hit crap at 100. I realize it was me and not the gun. I had to abandon the powder burning awhile as I allowed my passion to shoot fade away and blamed it all on politics, which fault truly can be blamed. But now that I have this Taipan, my enthusiasm has been compounded, not because it’s just fun, but by-golly, this thing is dead-nuts accurate. That sort of makes it easy to enjoy my time as it is an extension of myself and the damned thing hits where I tell it to.
Being my first “expensive” airgun, I come to expect this level of performance. But perhaps not as again, there just aren’t that many vids of super-long distance shooting. There are those few, but not as many as you might expect.
I suppose I’m rambling, but my point is that the Taipan does its job well. Well enough that I will not accept anything less. Let’s say I win that Impact drawing (doubtful) but if I do and that airgun doesn’t measure up, then I will sell it and get myself a Taipan shorty as many of you others have already had the smarts to do. Either way, the Impact will not have me putting my Taipan in storage nor take a back seat to anything. The only bench this thing is ever going to spend time on is a shooting bench. And hopefully I man up and get to hunting with it. :8:
Well Bill (I hope you allow me to call you Bill, I’ll call you “Sir” at the end of my post, promised). I watched your videos, more than impressive.
So you say you’re no marksman, well, please allow me to disagree in my small corner here, I just decided to consider you being one.
Let’s not forget that you’re shooting pellets from a pellet-specific twist barrel, not bullets from a bullet-specific twist barrel (if that makes sense) at a golf-ball not center-mass. I think we know the difference of pellet-stabilization vs. bullet-stabilization and the effects over great distances. I think we can calculate or at least guesstimate the distance where center-mass seen through a marksman’s scope has the same size as your golf ball at 250 yards seen through your scope.
Well, long story short, whatever happens with this drawing, you win or not (even if I’d like you to win, of course), in the end you accomplished something that’s not that easy at all to do and few of us have or ever will. I’ll cross fingers (except when shooting myself 😛 ) and if you feel like pushing out further, just do it, I’ll be watching the vid for sure and sweat with you.
My full respect, sir, and let us know whatever happens.
I notice Airgun Depot is 2 days late updating their leaderboard. So FX reigns supreme that much longer which is now an out-dated stat.
I wanna remind you guys that I’m no marksman. That comes with shooting powder burners where you have to deal with recoil. Anyone can accomplish this “challenge” with the Taipan Veteran Standard and many other airguns. I’m telling you though, with the Taipan, I STILL say it’s all about that trigger. Anyone can do the same if you take the time to set the gun up. Well, hardly even that. The only thing I did to the gun was up the fps with HST. Everything else such as setting up a a good scope properly and all that is a given if you wanna really reach out and touch something with the Taipan.
I still gotta thank Dairyboy as it was his setup that lead to mine, his twin brother Taipan. Only real thing different between his and mine is the scope. I don’t believe he has enough mils to get out to 250 and beyond? His is more purpose-setup for hunting. Mine can do both long range target and hunting, albeit his will be lighter in the field. Trade scopes with him and he can be reaching out as far as I did or further. It’s all about making the time and getting yourself out of your yard…that is, unless you’ve got land. :4: Sadly, I do not.

Bill Gates What’s happenin Mr. Bill?? I’d say this could certainly be done without a spotter, depending on scope. I’m using a 10-50x power scope, although I had it on 20x for this shot. I was able to see just about each and every splash, thanks to the magnification and clarity of this scope.
Totally hear you on running out of turret adjustment! I always go extreme and had a feeling I’d be shooting long range with this gun at some point, so I opted for the FX no limit rings right off the bat… Haha. They were all I adjusted for this shot, with the gun normally zeroed at 50 yards.
At 20x magnification I was holding over 2 – 2.25 mil dots when I made this shot. My scope has the TMX reticle, which allows tons of holdover points. Definitely helped with this challenge!

I was at 18 power on my 6-24×50 FFP and could only use 18 power to keep the bottom of my reticle visible in the sight picture to use as an aiming point on the ball.
I’m finally seeing my first and only drawback to FFP. A second focal plane scope the reticle stays put where as wit FFP the reticle zooms in with the target objective. I’d have to aim at a spot high above the ball and not be able to see my shots land as they’d be below my sight picture.
If I had adjustable scope rings I could try this distance. Mofo Bill Gate$ can’t even afford $100 rings. What is this world coming to? I’ve used up all my built-in 20 MOA rail.
I too knew I’d be playing long distance but figured only 100 – 125 yards max. When I bought my Taipan I never expected to be shooting friggin’ golf balls out to 300 and beyond. Sheesh. And by the way, way to put the smack down on my candy ass.
I may have to bow out at this point. Not that the Taipan Veteran .25 isn’t up to the task. But my current setup is now lacking unless I go to my Microsoft think tanks and come up with a plan.
