My Matador R5 just landed…
Yes. Title says it all. My R5 in .30 cal just landed safely in my hands. I always wanted to go high-power but so far the choice was pretty limited here in EU. Please don’t tell me one brand or another… after owning several PCPs from several manufacturers I simply wanted an EdGun, period! And short R5 (officially named as Standard) seems to be my ‚dream come true’ .30 high power airgun. Well… so far I’m delighted. I’ll play with her a bit in coming days, try couple of pellets, try another 1 or 2 scopes, and (of course) you can expect some photos in this thread soon. And after some time maybe also a review? Who knows… but for now quick and dirty ‚unboxing’ kind of picture of my R5 on my desk. Yeah!
My first scope of choice is Vortex Diamondback Tactical 3-9×40, which is lightweight, compact, good glass, good reticle and very good target turrets. So it fits my small R5 perfectly. Parallax is set at 100m… and well, that’s exactly what I need. It’s not a backyard gun after all! 100m seems to be just right for that sniping machine. Can’t wait to try her out…

Lazy summer afternoon with R5…
All I can say… both Vortex scopes are fine. Diamondback Tactical is a very good general purpose scope, the H-ST 6-24x is clearly a target scope. AT 100+ meters that 24x makes a difference for me (off bipod shooting). But for field use and off-hand shooting I’d probably stick to my 3-9x Tactical. Anyway… R5 is just awesome machine! It’s sort of .50 Barrett in EdGun’s line of guns.
Thinking about which one to go with my Matador R5. Ignoring the difference in magnification, Can anyone shed some light on how they compare in terms of optical clarity, construction quality and trackability / repeatability of the turrets ?

… no idea man. usually other manufacturers do 100 or 150 pieces in limited edition runs.
May be this is a stupid question. Why is this a limited edition ? is there an unlimited version and what’s the difference between the two ?
Most reports of the broken valve stems were with the early .30s with the smaller diameter valve stem and on the early .25s when people were trying to run the 34gr JSBs at 60+ft-lb with high regulator pressures and hammer spring tension, but having owned 5 Matators over the years (.22 R2.5, .25 R3, .22 R3M, .25 R3M, and just got my .25 R5M) and shooting 15K+ pellets through each of them (with the exception of the new R5M that I just received) nothing has ever broken. I still have a spare valve stem that was purchased along with my first .22 R2.5 that I’ve never touched. However, I’ve never owned a .30 or tried to run 34gr pellets in my .25s, so I’ve never really gone looking for trouble.
Not saying things can’t break, but all my Matadors have been very reliable. Only real issue I’ve encountered is the occasional need for replacing the regulator o-rings, and that’s more of a wear item than an outright parts failure. That happened once on my R2.5, once on my .25 R3, and once on my .25 R3M. After a lot of time and shots I’d notice either an immediate drop in velocity or inconsistent velocity over a fill, and it was always the o rings on the regulator piston that had taken a permanent deformation and was messing with the consistency of the regulator. Replace the deformed o-rings and back in business.
I have had my eyes on the Matador for quite some time but the widely reported problem of broken valve stem turned me off. Now a couple of generations have passed, I am wondering if there are still any known problems with the Matador .

I did some internal changes to make it just as I like it. If you check earlier posts in this thread I described all details with pics.
Have you adjusted the hammer spring on your R5? I can find no information on how much each 30* turn would affect fps, if any. I believe though it would reduce the internal noise some if backed off.
Any thoughts on this?

Just one more shot of my R5… for the record (as some guys seems to be really very concerned) I shoot only photos in the open field and forest like this. Photographer’s logic is not easy to follow… scouting for location only to take one photo at a very certain moment of a day. But that’s what I like and hope you enjoy it later. And of course it is absolutely fine and legal.
