Now here’s a head-f**k.
I’ve just realized that the hole through my lathe (through the chuck and spindle) is a pissant 1.25″ (approx). So I can’t get even a measly 1.5″ bar through it.
So…that’s what steadies are for, right? So how come these steadies are made with blunt pieces of metal THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO REST AGAINST AND STEADY A SOFT PIECE OF METAL REVOLVING AT HIGH SPEED?!
What kind of FUCKWIT came up with that idea? “I know, we’ll steady the revolving work against blunt pieces of metal so we can hear the workshop windows shatter with the screech and watch the surface get torn to shreds.”
I’ve tried it with 2″ bar. Not only is it next to impossible to get the bar concentrically held in the chuck’s jaws, the steady does all of the above.
Am I to believe that a lathe of the size of mine is limited to bar no bigger than 1.25″? Or that I’m supposed to wreck my work on a standard non-roller steady? Because finding a roller-steady to buy is proving to be an act of futility. Lots of places showing you how to convert a non-roller to a roller though, further indicating that retail items are unavailable as a rule.
I’m truly baffled.
The usual idiots, please spare me the comedic dross, it’s getting old. Walt from Hawaii or Sean, two chaps who seem able to advise without the condescending trash-talk, I’m all ears. Please put me straight on this one. I’m about to fear I’ve bought a lemon of a lathe.

Teflon, dude, I’m not old enough to have seen Clockwork when it came out, and, since I’m american, my attention span is severely lacking, so I’ve never bothered to rent it after the fact. Can you be plainer for the old movie-challenged guys pls?

Couple of my thoughts on the subject at hand… This reminds me a bit of the infamous Don Dragon/Tofazfou arguments on the old TOG from WAY back when…haha
For those who may not know, this site was built in the spirit of the the OLD TOG. The creator and original owner of the TOG really just didnt give a rats ass if you wanted to bicker. There was little need to ban anyone because if you were being a horses ass, then the members would pretty well run you out. If you chose to stay and be an ass, then you were the forum joke. All worked out well….
Anyone coming to this site has to realize a few things. We are not the kinder gentler forum. You can come here and speak your mind. Some people choose to edit themselves more than others.
When dealing with some of the regulars, you have to have a thick skin. I’ve ‘known’ WOK, YN, and TT for a long time here. WOK…. everyone gets upset at him at some point because he is the joker. Thats just how he is. I would think that if we ever met in person, I’d expect to have my hand shocked by a buzzer handshake. Just seems to be his personality… but… he is quick to help out and has a lot of knowledge. Same as for YN.. there has been many, MANY times where I wasnt quite sure of where he was coming from and wondered if he was being serious or not but we have to understand that *intent* is difficult to parlay in written text and so we must give each other the benefit of doubt when dealing with one another through this limited medium. I know for fact that both YN and WOK are stand up guys. I’ve gotten advice and done business with both of them in the past and really value what they have to say (unless it deals with gerbils) Tron normally dont get involved in scraps but comes out now and then to offer sound advice….
As I see it, nothing will get resolved by everyone bitching and moaning… but it’s entertainment! Everyone will read it…some, like me, will respond with what we feel is important…and most will read only a portion of these ‘holier than thou’ rants and dismiss it and go look for the good stuff! If you’ve gotten this far reading my drivel, I feel sorry for you..haha
Have at it, guys…. the rest of us will watch and enjoy the pissing match. When all is said and done, you’ll still have a forum where you can speak your mind, people will help out in any way they can, the humor will still be at a 5th grade level at best… and fart jokes are always welcome. Thats the beauty of the TAG.
Nice post, taken on board. I usually go by other peoples’ recommendations. If you have direct experience and reckon they’re good people they probably are. But they still had it coming. 😆
It’s an age old method of dealing with a bully. You let them push you around for a while, hoping they’ll get bored and go away. If they don’t you give them a sharp smack in the mouth and they usually stagger off to find easier prey. If they don’t have the sense to get the message you burn their house down. 😆

Well, “the old in-out” is a line from the film A Clockwork Orange (I’m way too young to have seen it when it was released) and I was just being facetious in using that quote as a way of describing Lang’s “plenty of the old tut tut”. Of course, what that really means, is plenty of tutting, which is the noise people make when they flick their tongue against the roof of their mouth as a sign of disapproval.
