Sgt. Carlos Hathcock is said to have killed a enemy sniper, in Viet Nam, while the sniper was looking through his rifle scope. The bullet struck the sniper in the eye by traveling the length of the scope. I would never dispute this story but I was wondering if any of you have tried this shot? It would be interesting if someone has a supply of the scopes that come on less expensive airguns.

they were using variable power scopes and not fixed, as were most all sniper scopes at the time. Most Viet’s also used the short scout type scopes. Myth buster’s did not make a good comparison as they normaly do when talking about fire arm Myths….

How about this scope…

I’d bet a 22lr could go through this scope at 50 yards no problem…

Did someone really think that a bullet could not be split when shot at a razor blade… Why not?

On Hathcock, the scopes that the VC’s were using were probably small 4x or 10x, old Russian optics, something that probably came off a Mosin Nagant… I would imagine he was using a 308 or 30.06 I would say up to a couple hundred yards the scope would easily be toast and probably be shot right into someone’s face if they were using it…

Older scopes have very little glass and are also pretty small in diameter… I think it may have happened, was it intentional, probably not…

Wasn’t there a shot like that in Saving Private Ryan…? Or was it Band of Brothers…

Nice shootin Saw and Adam!!!

Problem with Myth Busters is they don’t put much time into doing the tests, being it is film/tv, money and time are the bottom line, it’s like those redo your house shows, all the work is done in a week or over the weekend, sure they can get lots of stuff done but how long will it last and how nice was it since it was rush rushed?

I have been in the building industry for 25 years and you can’t make nice stuff super fast… (OK maybe a handful of people can but they are not all on that show….).

I saw the program Mythbusters attempting to shoot the length of a scope. Sgt. Carlos Hathcock, a Vietnam sniper, is reported as doing that against another sniper. One thing they did not take into consideration is the special rifle and possibly special hot rounds Hathcock made this shot with. Also, they would not know the type, or size of the scope that the round was supposed to have gone through so I could not say it did not happen. Hathcock was a very well known sniper and honestly I do not think he would have to say something like this just to boost his ego.

Doing this with a pellet rifle would be the ultimate shot and I think with the right conditions, it could be done. Have you tried this shot with a .220 pellet?

Hathcock was shooting a 1 MOA rifle and so was working the odds rather than making a pinhead accurate shot. If you can hold a gun to 1 MOA and shoot bullseyes you will over the course of time get possibles (dead center) but that is with the probability and luck mixed in.
I am a fan of Carlos Hathcock and amazed by his shooting but the scope shot is a bit of a crap shot.
Walter…

any one here used those exploding targets they sell online ?
I had some last year, took shots at them with the mini-14, holy shit, talk about explosion !!!
Huge bang along with mushroom cloud, pretty awesome.
I wonder if a pellet would set one off ?

Scenario:

“Killer Quicksand” like in the movies (i.e. quicksand that slowly sucks any person or animal unlucky enough to fall into it under) really exists.

BUSTED

Quicksand is denser than water; the greater the density, the greater the buoyancy of objects within. Any victims found in quicksand likely died for some other reason (i.e. exposure to the elements).

The guys on Myth Busters are Dill Holes.

I remember them trying to prove “Quick Sand” was a myth….LOL

I just got back from AZ, did some shootin.
I have a pistol target thats 1/4″ steel plate that spins, decided to take a whack at it with the mini-14 .223.
The bullet came super close to burning right thru, hole on front big bulge on the opposite side of impact.
I find it hard to believe a scope could stop a bullet, I think it would go right thru no problem.
Just another science project with ballistics, I will document.

I saw that busters episode as well. I think the results they had on that type of a scope using that type of round were accurate. I do not remember them trying steel core rounds (armor piercing) through a scope. The lead rounds would just break up to much trying to go through the multiple lenses of the scope. There were something like 9 in there?

Knifemaker. OOOPS my mistake. You got it right. I meant, i shot into the objective on one scope and the eye piece on another (cheap BSA scopes). And of course the pellet was even more shattered than the lenses…he he. But now of course we are talking about pellet guns going through a scope vs lets say a .308. So who really knows. AAHHH, that reminds me….i have 2 more scopes to get rid of….he he he

But we also have to remember that nowadays thoses shafts are aluminum and of course they dont necessarily split. But Robing Hood had WOODEN SHAFTS.

Regardless, that is some GREAT SHOOTING. I could only dream of shots like that.

quote Tofazfou:

Splitting a arrow was also proved to be TRUE. They showed BYRON FERGUSON doing it on tv. Can and could be done with a lot of luck as admitted by Byron.

His shot is SUPER cool but not impossible. Tons of videos of people splitting cards with pellets and bullets and such even further out. If you can split a playin card, you can hit a razor blade. Can you light a wooden match though with a pellet without taking off the head. I CAN……HE HE (not impossible, just fun)?

I have also shot a scope reticle at 30′ and the pellets smashes the 1st lense but STOPS right there. THose lenses seem to b very thick and they are concaved.

You’ve got me lost here. The reticle is deep inside the scope. Did you remove it and shoot it, or was it the objective (front) or ocular (eyepiece lens) that you shot. They are convex rather than concave. Only rarely are the reticle actually on etched lens. Normally there are only thin wires. Only on very high quality scopes are they actually etched in the lens its self. If you can afford to shoot a Zeiss or Swarofski Scope lens, I want to be adopted by you! 😀

I know what you mean about it being difficult to split an arrow. I shot serious competition for 4 years and only pulled it off less than 40 times. Usually the knock is what is split rather than the shaft. A full shaft split has to have a hit no more than 5 thousand ts off of dead center. Other wise,it will glance off. Kills your X ring Count!

Another trick we use to do at exhibitions is to take an old 45 record, put two long rubber bands thru the hole, wind it up in a bracket and then when it is spinning about its axis, shoot an arrow thru the middle without breaking the record. This is done at 20 yards. You can make bets easily that it can’t be done. 😯 There are always takers. That and shooting aspirins hanging from sewing thread at the same distance. They make a puff of white smoke when you nail them. It is even more challenging in the breeze when shot out doors.

Mike

My grandmother is the one that taught me how to shoot. She stood about 5 foot tall and I would not want to get in a contest with her. But you must remember she grew up when a lot of times you had to shoot your meals or go hungry. I may try the matches and pellet thing when it warms up a bit.

just wait the newest video is coming !!
