The original reservoir was going to be produced by Luxfer but after the long drawn out prose’s with the insurance company, I decided to go a different rout and use existing tanks like the one on the AF guns.
I will be coming out with an air rifle probably not this year unfortunately, I am real busy with the gunsmithing shop it takes up most of my time, so I decided to do conversions for the Air force guns for the time being when I do come out with my gun it will have interchangeable uppers like an ar-15 style gun so pretty much 22 cal 50 cal the possibilities are endless, right know I am finishing the design so I can submit it to the paten office.

Brad, how did you test your prototype steel reservoir? Did it pass? If the design had not been turned down by the insurance agency do you think you’d be producing the rifle for buyers?

I’ve seen oil used in the industry before – Does Dennis measure the amount of expansion?
Even if he doesn’t, its still more testing than some other big bore maker’s I’ve seen.
high pressure container can blow up for sure and couse damage or death
but mosts cases tanks dont blow up like a hand grenade….most likely it will tear in the case of steel…and while unpleasant it will just went out real fast
aluminium has a tendency to rupture a bit more violently when it happens. say breaking off the neck of the bottle…if that happened you would prolly blow and eardrum, maybe loose an eye….but be worse for the guy standing behind you….as the bottle will prolly make about 1000 fpe with its speed and weight
with fills the tanks expand and contract…this working of the metal be it steel or aluminum, hardens it….it is when the tank stops expanding because of hardening problems happen….cause hard metals are also brittle
Airarms has steel tanks too….they say inspect every 2 years
i guess what im trying to say is that yes theres a danger….will it explode violently like a handgranede no it will not….your still more likely to get hurt in traffic than handling just about any airgun for equal amounts of time !
researching aluminum vs steel….i was wondering why ducati was still using a steel frame when most other sports bikes was using aluminum….turns out that the amount of alu needed to make the frame as stiff and strong as steel…was allmost the same weight as steel….but the production costs was higher
in case of tanks for airguns i think its about the same….steel tanks offer greater volume, cause of the ability to have thinner walls vs using an aluminium tube
i think that some of the reason the guns that use tanks like the AF, rapids, daystate etc….do it because should it fail then they can go back to catalina or luxfer and say its their fault….i bet that luxfer and catalina puts a lot of R&D into making bottles vs say a B50 with a chinese steel tube for tank…how much do you guys think that BAM have researched that stuff…my guess is they looked up a tube and took and went one wall thickness thicker to add a bit of safety
have anyone heard of a DAQ blow up from faulty materials ? or any other gun for that matter…overfilling, and wrongfull uses of gasses does not count thats a user fault
Yes DAQ does test them but he does it the wrong way, you don’t test a cylinder by pumping oil into a cylinder next time you go and have a hydro done ask them how they do it.
To answer you on the cylinder exploding like a hand grenade, that fraise came from the engineer at Luxfer, that has more experience with high pressure cylinders than anyone on the forum so I take his word on that remark he should know.
It seems some people don’t want to believe me on this issue so next time you go and have your scuba tank hydro done explain to them on how DAQ testes his cylinders and don’t be surprised when they get real quiet and then warn you to stay away from them.
Just remember who warned you guys on this issue when people start to get hurt, I know there are a lot of Quakenbush supporters on the forum and that is fine many of you will defend Denis to the end. I am just curios why he doesn’t have insurance hope no one gets hurt, so far there has only been two or three guys that have gotten hit with bolts so far, I guess he didn’t heat treat his retaining lugs.
I don’t care if I piss people off with this subject my only concern is the safety of shooters, I would hate to here a bought someone getting injured or killed.

just to put things into perspective….i have witnessed a tank valve fail (of my own design) it shot the stem out a .308″ OD stem….the tank a 868cc….went boom…..im talking like an m80 2 feet in front of me…the tank then flew 10 yards….through a B51, through a cardboard box for a floor speaker, with heavy duty foam inside….donw to the endwall…hit concrete…turned around and came back 10 yards…hitting the basement wall with such force that concrete chipped off
this was a stupid mistake by me from which i learned a great deal….dont make your valveseats too small….yes theres geat power to be had with small valve seats…but delrin do shrink with 3000 psi surrounding it
the tank when it took off would prolly have hurt to be hit by….but at 10 yards it would have gained enough speed to be VERY lethal

Did I read somewhere he tests them to like 6000 psi, or is it just me.
I have read the same statement where he is testing up to 6000 psi but the way he is doing it he cant tell how much the tank is expanding and contracting, if you go to his website he states the fill pressure at 3000 psi in the online instructions so the guys that are filling them over that are messing with possible injury or DEATH, you have to realize paintball scuba and all other tanks are designed to fail in a specific way and not turn into a pipe bomb.
what about the talon condor, or even a daq, sooner or later the insides of the tank is gonna rust out right?

I have heard stories about jobsite 120psi compressors blowing, and not pretty.
I had a bike tire blow after pumping/ had a slow leak / few minutes later
ka-plow. Sounded like a m-80 or something.
The tanks on the guns are not inspected, so when is it no good anymore.
If I pass my arsenal down to siblings, how long will the tank be good?
I’m just curious, not worried, just wandering what the standards are for on-board reservoirs.

I was under the impression that the bolt-to-the-face thing is why the bolts are now enclosed inside the receiver, whereas the older ones are exposed.
I have a friend that was hit in the face with a bolt: knocked him out cold, bloodied him up good and gave him a new look. The rifle wasn’t a DAQ, though.
He is very lucky he didn’t lose an eye.
I would also be concerned with a bolt that is easily un-seated from the notch. Another friend of mine had the bolt fly back (enclosed in the receiver) because the bolt wasn’t seated firmly in the notch. That bolt was a very loose fit in the notch ( I saw it), to where gravity probably could have lifted it out of position.
I imagine that this condition could arise after extensive use. If the bolt at any time doesn’t seat very firmly, and is easily bumped-up out of the notch (to where some brush could unseat it), I would send it back for repair (no matter who made the rifle).
