Q:

.22 cal 21.1 gr Kodiaks VS 21.14 gr H&N Baracudas

Switching over to Baracudas from Kodiaks. My groups at 50 yards appear equal but as the psi was dropping the fps made a noticeable 20 fps difference.

Condor Top Hat 0.085″, Power Wheel = 2 Full Turns

Conclusion:
The little weight difference = about 20 fps.
The last of the Kodiaks = 47 fpe
The first of the Baracudas = 45 fpe
I don’t know if the Baracuda would out perform the Kodiaks if the firing order was reversed. I’ll have to revisit this when I get another tin of Kodiaks.

Has anyone else shot a similar or reversed order string with the Kodiaks VS the Baracudas? I’d like to see the data at the point of change.

If i may weigh in, (no pun….) 😆 I think this depends on where your priorities lie. If you are looking for the absolute, most consistent pellet available, this all may be worthwhile. On the other hand, if you are not into cleaning, sorting, weighing, and lubricating your pellets to attain the utmost in accuracy, this may well be a waste of time to get results that you would not notice. If i had the time, it sounds like a fun experiment, though for my use, i wouldn’t notice a difference. More power to ya Lurker, sounds like your on to something. :8

ninj-
I went through a few pellets real quick like, however the H&N’s were pretty much the same as the kodiaks
weight and head dia.
Fact of the matter they look identical.
I believe they are, and what Beeman does with them who knows ❓ ❓ ❓ ❓ ❓ ❓ ❓
I really think .02 of a grain should not be an issue, for me any how.
What does the ballistics say for a 100 yard shot with a 30.6 compared to a 30.9 ? at a 100 yards 1/32″
Maybe one of you guys could run that through 🙄 🙄 🙄

Saw –

I thought that too at first.. But now I think (emphasis on think) the Kodiaks are unsorted and the H&N are sorted since I found that Beeman no longer offer’s .22 Kodiak Match.

Like the Boxed CP’s compared to tinned.

I just did a random sample of the Barracudas and the Kodiaks.
However in 25 cal though.
Head dia, pretty much the same .248
Weight pretty much the same any where between 30.6 to 30.9 grains.
As I understood and still believe the H/N Barracudas and the Beeman Kodiaks are the same freckin pellet.
Beeman buys the H&N’s and does a repackage with their logo, I was told this long ago, during the 25 shortage.
Now if this applies to the 177’s, well I don’t know, never mess with the 177’s
too tiny 😳 😳 😳 😳
17 HMR well thats a different story 😉 😉 😉
Beeman basically imports the pellets and re- brands them, same fuckin ammo period.
one tenth of a grain is nothing
I tried to pull some nostril hairs to weigh my scale did not pick them up, but, a 10th of a grain is very minimal

YN,
I know of only 2 universal constants, God and change. Both are necessary although God doesn’t change. On the other hand, change confuses our communications as is obvious even in this topic, but is necessary or we’d be stuck in the same place all the time. This forum is a fantastic tool to keep us on the move with info otherwise not readily available and out of information comes new ideas that bring about more change.

Time to get some calipers out and see what size head the Barracudas are defaulting to. Could be the standard size head is not the same as the Kodiak’s.

They used to exist…. But it seems that Beeman dropped the .22 Kodiak Match pellets –

http://www.beeman.com/pellets.htm

quote :

Beeman Kodiak Match……Available in .177 and .25 calibers only.

As for the different diameter’s of the H&N – I dont know where you would buy them in the US, I just saw that they offer them in my H&N Catalog.

Y.N. as far as P.A. is concerned, he’s right. They must of stopped carrying the Beeman “Match” sorted. Other places may still have them though????? Where do you find the different size .22 Cal. pellets?

YN,
Here are both that I got from PA:
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/Beeman_Kodiak_Extra_Heavy_22_Cal_21_10_Grains_Pointed_200ct/301

On PA I don’t see any .22 cal. Kodial 21.1 gr “MATCH” pellets. Is there such a thing? As the link above, PA offers a similar substitute for the Kodiak extra heavy pellets are the H&N Sport 21.14 gr “Match” pellets.

I didn’t find a “Match” grade of .22 cal Kodiak extra heavy 21.1 gr on the Beeman web site either. And they don’t list a comparison to the H&N 21.14 grain Match.

So, If you want “Match” grade pellets in .22 cal. extra heavy pellets it’s H&N Sport.

Would you please post a picture of the top of both brands of pellets your using. Or failing that if you could just answer the question I posted earlier that asked if your using Match versions of the Kodiaks or the regular type?

H&N Barracuda’s are available in several different head sizes and several different levels of sorting.

Your 20fps difference could be that the barracuda fit your bore better…. the fact they have been sorted will also help with giving a more consistent velocity along with the better bore fit.

You asked for input.. so there it is.

Savagesam, Hey, no problem. I was thinking of being a smart alec myself and saying ‘I hope I didn’t offend any Klods.

Sawtime, No, and I still don’t think such a minimal weight difference should matter except for the obvious 20 fps difference it made when I changed from Kodiaks to Baracudas. If my Chrono readings where consistently jumping around by 20 fps I would think that something was wrong. If I made an adjustment and got 20 extra fps I would be happy.
When you can go from one tin of pellets to another tin of “the same pellets” and get a noticeable change in fps does it make tuning more or less valuable?
If nothing else we are all more aware of the need for quality pellets.

Benzin, The string at the beginning of this thread were pellets I had put into my own containers with foam and a little FP-10 lub. But I hadn’t cleaned them. Then when weighing the groups of 10 I noticed my fingers getting oilier after switching to the Kodiaks. So my method was not fully scientific. However, you brought attention to another way that Kodiaks and Baracudas ARE NOT ALIKE. They are lubed differently right in the tin.
This summer I plan to get real serious and 1) washing 2) sorting & 3) Lubing all the pellets I plan to use for serious 100 yard target shooting.

PS Is Corolla owned locally or by a foreign brewery?

OK, here it is, Baracudas VS Kodiaks tin for tin.
WEIGHT IN GRAMS
COUNT…..CUDAS……KLODS…….KLODS
10………….13.9……….13.8………..13.8
20………….27.7……….27.6………..27.6
30………….41.6……….41.4………..41.5
40………….55.4……….55.3………..55.3
50………….69.3……….69.2………..69.1
60………….83.1……….83.1………..82.9
70………….97.0……….96.8………..96.7
80………..110.8………110.7……….110.6
90………..124.7………124.5……….124.4
100………138.6………138.3……….138.3

KODIAKs
138.3 grams = 2,134.2952 grains
2,134.2952 gr Divided by 100 Count = 21.342952 grains average
DIFFERENCE of Average Weight = 0.046297 gr

Conclusions:
Cudas weigh more than Klods.(period)

Thanks for the info, I just had an idea…
It could a diference in the pellets, but it could alse be that the ammount of lubricant (oil) in kodiaks is smaller that in barracudas? maybe they put more oil on tins of barracudas? oil has a weight too!
maybe removing all lubricant from both pellets before puting them in the scale to be shure?
just a tought

mmmmgh,
Lurker, do you really think that the minimal weight difference really matters that much ?
I will go out on a limb and say no.
I believe Beeman takes the Barracuddas and re packages them as Kodiaks,
Plain and simple.
.02 of a grain aint shit.

What’s a KLOD?

Sorry I missed your post.
Some call the Kodiak pellet ‘Kods” and I took the creative liberty to change it to “Klods”. Nuffin scientific about it, just trying to arouse curiosity and input from others.

I know what you meant. I was being a smart alec. Sorry.
