Q:

Talon SS 177 or 22?

I’m looking at getting a Talon SS withe the 12oz co2 tank, but cant decide if I want 177 or 22 cal. The plus for 177 is im already geared up for that caliber. I have about 2000 pellets, cleaning rod, cleaning pellets etc. But, it seams like everyone suggests going with the 22.

My shooting consists of almost all target/plinking with the occasional pest dispatching. IE fairly large tree squirrels that like to harass my dogs. Other than that I wouldnt use it for hunting.

Im also tossed up on what scope to get. Right now I’m leaning toward a UTG Golden Image Red/Green Dot Sight:

But I also like the leapers bug buster:

So what are your opinions or suggestions?

I found that shooting in the garage is loud no matter what you do because of the echo. Go outside and its a different story. Once spring has kicked in tree leaves etc. will also help kill the noise.

Also, checkout this thread, I’m using the hair curler silencer to great effect: http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=134 At 2600psi its very reasonable; the impact sound is louder and has more authority than the original shot.

I’m going to head over to walmart and lowes tonight 😀 If that dont work I’ll need to contact talon tunes 😀

this rifle is straight up badass! 😎

i thought maybe some heavier pellets would help, but 21.14 gr barracudas with the power wheel at the lowest setting is just as loud. It shoots everything ive put through it super accurate 😀

contact tony at talontunes. he’ll quiet ‘er down…i recently had the opportunity to shoot pat’s “toilet buster”, and lemme tell ya….its quiet!!! all you hear is the click of the hammer (when shooting)…and a slight “PFFT” standing next to the shooter.
try shooting without the endcap to see how loud it really is…
enjoy!

ok, this sucker is really loud! I had an RWS mod 34 panther pro and it was waaayyyy quieter with no shroud or anything. I’m definitely going to have to quiet it down before assassinating any tree rats.

I filled the bottle to 2600 psi and even on power 1 its way loud. It seems to like 15.8 gr JSB pellets! Im going to try some 18.1 gr JSb’s here in a few minutes.

Top hat settings are a little over rated… BUT! They are very very important. Here’s my advise: If your tank is sold with your gun then the top hat has been adjusted to remove slack between the breech and the hat. This is all you need for a great performing gun. Do not mess with it if it shoots accurately! If you buy a second tank you may need to adjust it to remove excess slack.

To test your power levels without a chrony get a telephone directory and shoot into it. You’ll quickly spot valve lock with shallow penetration followed by deep and eventually shallow again. This is the cheapest way to work out your starting pressure and number of shots.

Some TSS numbers to get you going. Tophat 0.086 (or there abouts). Power wheel 4.0 through 6.0. Starting fill pressure 2400-2600psi.

Also checkout this thread. I use the hair curler silencer and at 800 pages of penetration its quieter than my Crosman 1377 🙂 http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=134

Good luck! And enjoy your gun!

PS. The above is just my opinion… and you know what they say about opinions.

Ive read that thread. I’m going to try the curlers, theres also a thread about venting the frame and drilling the front barrel bushing out. I’ll try the curlers first though. I definitely want it to be as quiet as possible. I dont need the neighbors calling the cops on me lol and I want to be able to shoot outside, or at least through the back door from inside.

So full 3000 psi at highest setting is overkill with the 12″ barrel? That makes sense. I orders fairly heavy pellets. All > 15 grains. Got some jsb jumbos, crow magnums etc. i read in another thread you’re either making power or making noise
