Anyone here like the AK-47 or AK-74?
The AK-47 is actually illegal here in CT, but I wanted to hear your thoughts on these types of rifles.

I sold my two AKs and SKS a while ago and bought a nice, light, and accurate DPMS 223 and added a foregrip w/ laser and stobe. Now I can actually hit things. I popped an EOTech holosight on it. It is setup for 100 yards and less.
inside 40 yards or buildings ,Saiga 12 wins hands down . I would take it over any submachinegun or carbine at close range. and there is no body armor on a face
M1A NM , one the best general purpose rifles ever made. wont break, wont misfire, deadly accurate, good rate of fire . and there is very little to hide behind .
it can be used at close quaters and long range , there are better specificly made close quater and long range weapons, but very few all purpose rifles that I know of that can match the M1A.
I do not like the 223 round for defense. the storys Ive read all seem to indicate a lack of killing power at certain ranges .
at very close range it seem to icepick through the target without causeing a severe ballistic channel , barring a killshot of course.
at long ranges 300 to 500 yards it loses enough velocity and hits like a .22.
at 25 to 250 yards It will do the job, but not my personal preferance.

1st off the stats in the Wiki piece are bogus in the extreme…
the .300 Magnum unit I tested was in Canada and was one of a pair brought in for the Canuck government. Recall one was purchased and the demo rifle is still in the importers private collection so far as I know.
Seen pix of one being shot by a member of the federal police in Argentina and heard one is also in Chile in Government stores
There are a handful in the USA, some in private collections, some otherwise.
I assume the handful purchased by the German government are still in the armories
suppose to be a handful still in the Walther factory, not certain if they are for sale or not
last one I noted was some time back on the european Egun auction site, seem to recall it went around 30K

not certain on total production numbers, have seen the wiki claim of 170 however serial numbers seem to indicate a larger production
Walther floated these ultimate Bullpups in a variety of 3rd world markets as although some will be surprised its sometimes the corrupt and nearly bankrupt governments/dictatorships that spend insane money on outfitting their internal security apparati as there is no real oversight on spending.
Consider the only government to adopt the SIG 510 other than the Swiss were the Chileans under Pinochet
As gun happy as the Arabs are I would not be the least surprised if there were a few examples in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, ect

See there is the thing. Maybe they can make them good, but what does it take? Did some quick research on that walther, and they made 170ish of them. There are 15 in the U.S. 11 owned by walther, and the other 4 by another company. From what I have read, if you ask nice you can buy one from walther. They will give one to you for a measly $75000.
So I guess I will give in and agree that they can be made good. But then again, a lot of problems can be solved if you throw enough money at it.
And my blaser may not be state of the art, but I have yet to shoot anything I like more, and I have shot some nice rifles.
I was reading through the thread and when it got to the bullpup discussion I was thinking “man, if only Lama shot the WA 2000”, and then it gets discussed.
I may be wrong on this, but I heard that all of the WA 2000s were snapped up into private collections and if you wanted to buy one (next to impossible) you’d have to find something like $100,000 to do it.
Another great bullpup rifle is the Keppeler KS-V.
it may seem counter intuitive for you but some bullpup designs can have effectively crisper triggers than the vast majority of conventional triggers
for example not all Bullpups rely on a long linkage bar
for example some use a cable linkage that actuates a secondry spring loaded firing sear that in turn releases the primary sear…essentialy an auto setting set trigger assembly. One of the mountain rifles I played with years ago had that type of system and its pull was extremely crisp, clean and was set in the ounces.
Another method is the use of electric triggers…no I do not mean the paintball style conversions airgunners use
I am talking triggers on the same class as that found on the FWB80 match pistol which is incredible
even action bar or rod systems can be made to perform providing they are designed properly. Some custom bullpup competition rifles use ball bearing systems to nearly eliminate friction found in standard set ups.
You may think your Blaser is state of the art

you want to experience a true match grade Sniper platform with an incredible trigger you best step back and try the Walther 2000 Sniper rifle and note it too is a Bullpup
I do agree in general Bullpups add a great deal of issues to the creation of superior triggers but those problems are far from insurmountable…
actually shot the .300 Magnum version years ago…incredible piece of machinery and yes the trigger was about as good as it gets
then again these were nearly ten grand in the late 80s
Some are better than others.
The problem is, there is the trigger in it’s normal spot. but the sear has to be back by the action. So there can’t be nice light parts for the trigger, one part has to be a big long rod that connects everything. And that is why it can’t be great. It might can be good, but never great. 😉
the M82 is horrible all the way around but it was about the 1st commercial Bullpup in the USA
Now as far as Bullpups not being able to produce decent triggers

years back I had one of these units:
the extremely rare AWC G2 M14
picked mine up from a retired Fed at a show. These babies were built on limited government contracts for both elite military groups and certain federal law enforcement agencies. A few were also released comercially on both semi and pre 86 select fire actions. Mine was built up from a National Match M1A and as far as I was concerned the trigger was nearly as good as the stock NM M1A. Sold it for stupid money a few years back when I got out of the powder burner scene.
Handled a few custom bullpup mountain rifles over the years that had triggers as good as anything with a conventional layout
its not so much a fault of bullpups in general as it is design of the individual bullpup trigger group.

Don’t get me wrong, they work. It will shoot the gun. And they work fine for plinking. But they just can’t be fine target triggers.

Bullpups just aren’t good firearms. First problem is the trigger. Triggers are extremely important to me, and how good they should be goes up with the cost of the rifle. Bullpups just can’t have awesome triggers, their design won’t let them.
Plus that one looks like it would have the same issue as the enfield. That huge bolt handle sticking out like that. Try and shoot it left handed, and it can do some serious damage to your face.
And god help you if something happens that causes detonation. Normal rifles it all happens in front of you. A bullpup exploded under your cheek.
But those are problems with bullpups, so nothing against valmet specifically there. I have actually never heard of them. Never would have even thought of a fancy ak-type rifle. 😆
