Q:

.22 Vulcan TGAG shroud

Couple of months ago if you asked me if I was going to buy a Vulcan or Mutant my answer was no. I was happy with my .22 Cricket and .25 R3M. But since I have no life and I hang out with old folks on here, I was constantly exposed to the Mutant and Vulcans. Mutant appealed to me because of how quiet the report was and the smoothness in the cocking. Very similar to the Cricket and that’s why I held out so long. Tell you the truth the Mutant compact is a very nice and quiet gun. I prefer it over my Cricket based on the weight and compactness. Then comes the Vulcan, I had a prod sitting around that was never going to get used again because of the mutant and I had other airgun accessories laying around. You guys probably saw a bunch of my ads on the Yellow. Any hoot, I was able to gather enough money to buy a Vulcan. Oak man hooked me up real nice on a used one with all the bells and whistles. He said it was too loud for his shooting even though it has the latest TGAG shroud. It baffled me so I took a chance on it. Ernest had already worked his magic and got rid of the twang and ping. But here is the thing, the gun screamed like a hungry fat lady. Oak wasn’t kidding when he said the gun was still loud. It rang my ears for a long time and this is only after a few shots. Really bummed out, I kept thinking how is this shroud so loud? I don’t own a hummingbird but others have compared this new shroud to it. Very tempted to sell it to another member on here, I gave it one last chance and made my own shroud for it. After seeing jfrazier30’s video(http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=33399) of how quiet his gun is I was determined to get mine to that level. He’s also shooting out of a TGAG shroud but mine doesn’t sound anything like it.

I spent a few hrs in the garage and made my own shroud. Crossed my fingers, closed my eyes and pulled the trigger. The sound was night and day! Exactly like jfrazier’s. Told Vince I am sorry but I can’t sell this gun anymore, it sounds awesome. Just hammer slap and hardly any muzzle blast. This shooting without LDC. With LDC, forget about it, super quiet. When guys say there is no hammer slap, they are lying, when metal slaps on metal there’s going to be a hammer slap. However, there is no ping. Just a quick slap.

Here is what the TGAG shroud looks like inside

Everything looks like it was CNC very nicely and the baffle holes are very tight to the .22 pellet.

Here is what is in my shroud, just two baffles, two metal curlers wrapped in felt and spacers

My shroud has 4 vent holes in a line at the top.

Also topped off with a black delrin cap.

For this one, I mad an LDC without the cone shape in the back to make it short as possible

I am very happy with this gun now but still trying to figure out why the TGAG is so loud. Any suggestions? Do I have to align the holes in the side of the baffles so that they are all in a line?

I have put a bit of carbon arrow shaft into my HW100 silencer, to narrow down the exit hole. and when reaching back, the tube will create some more enclosed space.

the size is OK since I can still shoot a .22 through (when I stick the silencer on my other gun) but when I put it back to the .177 groups are larger.

they don’t clip because that would mean grouping like a shotgun with .22, but still without a silencer on the .177 it groups best.
don’t know maybe the 1/2 inch thread on my .177 barrel is not aligned or what but I feel like it is the silencer messing it up.

will see what my Vulcan sounds like, I guess sub12 is nothing left to silence

There is a reason GOOD muzzle brake/muffler builders want to center evrything. A good, clean crown , as an example , lets the projectile go evenly and without different pressure on any side but just even pressure surrounding the projectile. That´s that.
There´s plenty of info to be found for those who feel like seeking for it.
Regarding you being a pervo i have no proof to prove otherwise. Sorry.
Now, let me go back to the Herring Juice pressing and leave me be.

I think you just need to get as small as possible exit aperture on your silencers, that makes the biggest difference. but it can mess up the pellet flight even if it is not clipping.

BOLLOCK!!!

My challenge is “Prove me wrong”…as I’m too old and too blind to do a good job of it, although I may try if this keeps coming up.

You and rkr have been drinking the same contaminated water! That pellet is moving 880 fps, and unless it actually hits the shroud’s opening, there is no physical reason for it’s pellet’s flight to be altered!

Small diameter pellet holes do one thing, and that’s slow the air exiting behind the pellet! There is approximately 6″ of shroud beyond the barrel, and 6″ more if you add an LDC. That means the pellet covers that distance in roughly 1/1000th of a second, 880/1000th of a second to be exact. Without physical contact, and given the baffle’s effect on the trailing air column pushing the pellet, that pellet is downrange by the time the air behind it contacts the opening in the shroud.

I have maintained in the past, and I still state without reservation, the opening of the shroud has no POI effect on the pellet leaving that barrel. The older posts covering this in past years have long since been archived/deleted, but this has been covered many times in the past. There is only anecdotal evidence (hearsay) that states this. No empirical evidence has ever been stated. On the contrary, many shooters with tight tolerance exit holes on their shrouds have produced excellent results in both short and long range shooting.

Good choice ! Water is bad for you – unlike Beer, Vodka and Whiskey.

Oh, but he actually is – and a good one too. The telescopic shroud though is not one of his best inventions.

Ville, stop bashing your fellow Swedes, the guy on the video said it’s good so it must be that.

Yes. That’s true. My bad and i humbly apologize for that brutal statement.

It’s the pressure wave hitting the extension wall. Wrap some neoprene or shrinktube around it and the noise is dampened.

Since I am the second owner of this Vulcan, I was not able to witness the Ping and twang that accompanied it. Ernest went through and installed the delrin bushing, spring guide, designer in AT and this gun is one of the quietest PCP I have with the LDC on. Quietest in terms of being able to shoot 900 + fps from inside the house and the room does not echo like it does with my .22 Cricket and .25 R3M. If you shoot the gun normally you hear a quick slap next to your ear. Now take it and shoot it Rambo style with the gun by the hips all you hear is a click. Normally I have to reduce my other guns to 700 fps or even lower to achieve this result

Now let’s talk about the sliding shroud of the Impact. As many of you know, I used to make the pvc slide cover that slides over the OEM shroud. If you roll up kitchen liner and hardware cloth, the results are amazing. However, if you left the pvc tube empty and have it extended 6 inches from the OEM shroud exit hole. The noise is louder in my opinion. The echo effect or vibration makes it louder. The impact’s shroud cover is most likely made out of aluminum so that would vibrate more than the PVC. Guess we’ll just have wait for Daryl’s review :biggrinn:

I watched another video and that guy was saying fx in thinking about putting that telescopic shroud even on older guns, so it must be good,
of course you cant hear anything, impossible to record a muzzle blast. and if you shoot towards the camera, the extension makes the microfone pickup more because it is closer to the hmm muzzle.

any extra chamber helps. I think you just need to get as small as possible exit aperture on your silencers, that makes the biggest difference. but it can mess up the pellet flight even if it is not clipping.

personally I don’t like that gun at all. someone mentioned it that it seems as it had been put together from garbage bits, Frederik is not an engineer

quote keyser soze:

That telescoping FX shroud is trash, who would want a gimmick like that? Donny’s LDCs and shrouds are really good.

I did watch a video where someone was doing a review on the impact. The extention of the shroud didn’t make a difference at all. At least nothing detectable on the video. The guy didn’t even comment on how well it works. So it’s something that looks good on paper but doesn’t add up in the real world

They LDC and shrouds are thumbs up x 2. I don’t know the hell was up with Peters shroud. I paid 95 dollars for that dud.
