Q:

.25 cal Blod valve strings

I’m using a Talon with a 21″ .25 cal barrel, Blod valve, included heavy spring installed with powerwheel set to 00, stock Talon hammer. Top hat set at .258. Prochrony chronograph. Shooting Kodiaks.

Going to try a 75 gram hammer when it gets here, but i’m closing in on the bell curve. 😀 Too windy to shoot for groups, but i was hitting my 3″ target at 85 yards with regularity, though i was not really taking my time, and shooting off a bipod, no rear bag. What do you guys think?

Just to be clear, this is no witch hunt, i am trying to ascertain if this is due to my use, or abuse, or if it is a defect. From what i know so far, i am not terribly outside of how others are using them. I am looking for possible reasons this is happening, if it is my fault, i surely do not want to pass it on to Brad, as he was very good about immediately replacing the first one. I have nothing bad to say about Brad, his valve, or how he handled the first return, and have been happy with the performance they achieve, until they broke. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I sent the first valve back to Brad, he sent me the new one. They broke in the same place, at the end of the threads. I measured the wall thickness where it broke, and between the bottom of the threads to the inner wall is about .35 mm, which seems thin, but i am no engineer.

Here is a pic of the first valve after it broke, the second is the breakage from today.

Wondering what others are running theirs at, trying to sort out a problem.

This is how i am measuring mine.

That picture was taken after the stem broke, it is bottomed out in the valve body, no stem to get in the way. I removed the end that broke off.

I can screw my tp in so its completely flush with the body!!
Clearly there is a design change internaly then??

First thing Blod told me when I picked up my valve was that I would never need more than 2-3mm on the tophat. This is the man who designed the valve telling me this. And he was right(of course) What has been changed in the Blod/Brad valve then??

The only difference in my breech is that I have filled in the well

You have backed the locking grub inside the tp out to allow the tp down further??

This is my TH bottomed out in the valve, .100 in.

This is my setting.

The outermost setting seems to be about .275 before it is outside the o ring. I found the breech can travel back futher than what i thought.

So it seems my setting is not out of question, although yours is so much smaller, i wonder why, could it be your custom breech. Hopefully someone will chime in who has a unmodified gun. I always seat the breach against the tophat, not against the frame, is this correct?

Correct. Iwas just reading through brads 20 page post, and saw Nalby and Mamcrackin were setting their tophats at around my setting, mams was even .27 something.

So if I’m getting this right, if you put the tophat down to 0.078, the breech would not come back far enough to engage the tp??

Ha 😳 I just figured out you were way ahead of me, i’m not up on this metric stuff. I’m a carpenter, everything is in inches. 😕 When the breech is in the furthest rearward position, at this tophat setting, it is just seating against the breech. To adjust to your setting, the breech would not be seated against the tophat. Do i have something weird or what the hell? Am i totally missing something? I thought the only hazard was adjusting the tophat out past the o ring. I’m mm’s away from that. I could see if i was using a huge hammer, but i’m using a Talon hammer, shouldn’t be abusing it with my current setup. I’m baffled. If this is my fault i feel like shit Brad replaced the first one. Fuck. Everything was going so good, something was bound too go wrong. 👿
